Katharine McPhee goes platinum

I can count on one hand the times I’ve written something negative about a celebrity’s hair on this website. However, this is an instance in which I won’t be able to keep my mouth shut.

When I saw Katharine McPhee’s platinum blonde hair for the first time, a little part of me died.

To this day, when I see that blonde photo, it triggers some sort of blinky-eyed, vapid response in which my body becomes totally unresponsive. Please tell me this was not a personal decision. For the love of God, SOMEONE TELL ME IT’S FOR A MOVIE ROLE.

WHY, KATHARINE, WHYYYYYYYY?

The Best Dry Shampoo

klo

Ladies and gents, my favorite dry shampoo. I’ve pretty much tried them all, and Klorane is by far my favorite. It smells good, blends well, doesn’t get funky towards the end of day, doesn’t make my dark brunette hair look powdery AND the nozzle doesn’t clog. It has been a savior for my blunt bangs these past couple of weeks. I love love love it.

Now, Klorane Dry Shampoo is available in travel size! This portable beauty tool fits into any bag to make cleansing between regular shampoos even more convenient. Ideal for frequent use, the travel friendly dry shampoo with oat milk leaves hair clean, refreshed and full of volume.

Directions for use: Shake well before use and evenly spray a small quantity of powder 12 inches from the hair. Leave for 2 minutes, then brush thoroughly.

NEW Travel Size Klorane Dry Shampoo SRP $7.50 / 1.06 oz.

How to Create Beachy Waves

How about we focus on an easy, less “perfect” look for the summer season?

This tutorial demonstrates how I wear my hair 95% of the time. I certainly enjoy a smooth and straight look, but I just don’t have the time (NOR THE ARM STRENGTH) to blow dry my hair on a daily basis. Plus, as I’ve said here numerous times, wavy/curly girls should celebrate their tresses!

(While this look is easier to create with naturally wavy hair, straight gals can achieve it too! Get your curling irons ready!)

Just remember, the key to this look is NOT trying to make the waves perfect. If you mess with the waves too much, your hair will end up looking frizzy. You are going for a loose, casual and summery vibe!

What you need.

products

Brush (mainly for bangs)
Beach spray (Some of my favorites here.)
Wax or pomade
Wide-toothed comb
Sock Diffuser

Okay, kiddos! Wash and towel-dry your hair. Comb through tangles with a wide-toothed comb.

1

Separate your bangs from the rest of your hair.

2

Blow dry your bangs in the opposite direction that you want them to lay.

3

I’m telling you, it works!

4

Flip hair over and and give it a good scrunch.

5

Spray beach spray all over the hair.

6

Everywhere.

7

Give hair a nice scrunch again. (This will help create volume and texture for less wavy gals.)

8

I personally like the way my hair air dries with the beach spray, but if I don’t want to deal with a damp head of hair, I will use my Sedu 4000i hair dryer with the sock diffuser attached. If your hair isn’t terribly wavy, you will want to use the diffuser to help create some bends and volume throughout the hair.

With your hair dryer on the lowest heat setting, diffuse your hair while gently scrunching.

10

To create more defined waves, twirl your hair and let the dryer work it’s magic.

9

Tada! Loose, beachy waves.

b4iron

Now, if your hair needs a little more oomph OR you see some spots that are a little too freaky/frizzy, grab your curling iron. My Hot Tools 1-inch is a godsend. (In my humble opinion, the cheaper gold-barreled ones are WAY better that the more expensive ceramic ones. The curls look nicer and stay put longer.)

Wrap random, small pieces around the barrel of the curling iron without using the clamp.

ciron

I usually curl 1-2 small pieces on each side. If your hair is on the less wavy side, you might need more. Remember, you are going for beachy and casual! Don’t overdo it!

ciron2

Grab your wax orpomade. Rub a tiny amount between your fingers and separate some of the waves for a piecey look.

And voilá! Beachy waves in about 15 minutes!

How to Acheive a Smooth and Straight Look

I have fallen in love with a hair dryer and must shout it from the rooftops.

dryer

The Sedu 4000i. This powerful bad boy is the king of smooth. Take a look for yourself!

sedu

OMG. Please don’t dwell on that first photo as it was VERY EARLY in the morning. (The things I will do to spread the word about hair products, I swear.)

Armed with a round brush, your favorite heat protectant and the Sedu, you can whip that crazy hair into shape in minutes!

Start by combing your hair with a wide-toothed comb. (Mine is from Sephora.)

2

Add you favorite smoothing/heat protectant. On this particular day, I used Redken Satinwear Ultimate Blow Dry Lotion.

(Others I like are Kerastase Chroma Riche Leave-In Treatment, Bumble and Bumble Styling Lotion, Matrix Sleek Look Sealing Serum, Sedu Moisturizing Heat Protecting Boost and my absolute very favorite on the entire planet, Kerastase Nectar Thermique. Which is an entire post in itself. Seriously, it is worth EVERY PENNY.)

Work the product through your hair.

6

Oh, wait. For those of you with sideswept bangs, go ahead and knock those out by drying them in the OPPOSITE direction of how you want them to lay. Seems counterintuitive, but it works! See?

bangs

Okay. Separate your hair into sections.

13

Start drying away!

blowdry

Remember to keep the dryer nozzle pointed downwards towards the hair shaft as you pull your round brush slowly through the length of the hair.

Keep drying all of the sections until your face is dripping with sweat and you feel like dying.

17

When dry, add a dab of shine-enhancing product. (Favorites are Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream and Moroccan Oil. Be careful with the Moroccan Oil, as you might want to take a swig after smelling the heavenly scent.)

21

Work the product through the mid-length of your hair to the ends. Touch up with a flat iron if necessary, and voilá!

end

Smooth and straight, baby.

Update — Mir

Remember Mir?

mir_before

Mir had some styling dilemmas, and if you recall, I was 100% in favor of growing her hair out. (In fact, for all you curly girls who might have missed it the first time, that post was chock full of product and styling tips!)

I recently received a great update from Mir! From her email:

I heeded your advice and found a great stylist who actually knows what to do with curly hair. No more am I a triangle head! (She does minimal layering on the top, then pulls sections straight out from my head and thins it from underneath. It’s like watching a dog be brushed with the Furminator — huge clouds of hair fall away, but miraculously, I never end up bald. It’s mystical.)

The resultant thinned-out hair lays out nicely when worn curly with minimal poof, and can also be flat-ironed with relative ease when I want a change.

Thanks for the advice! I kind of love my hair now!

Take a look at Mir’s beautiful curls now!

To change it up, Mir also works the flat iron like a pro.

Thanks for the update, Mir. You look wonderful!
