Because this is a true democracy…

I followed the majority and cut sideswept bangs.

vote

First off, can we talk about how almost 1,400 people voted on the state of my bangs? 1,400 people. I had to double-check to make sure duplicate votes weren’t counted, because 1400 PEOPLE, YOU ALL. I LOVE YOU.

Looking solely at the vote, I would say you all were very clear regarding your intentions with my hair. (Dear Sarah’s father, I plan on spending the rest of my life with Sarah’s bangs.) BUT! The comments! The comments were all pretty much, “we love your blunt bangs! Keep your blunt bangs! Sideswept are for sissies!”

Confusion ensued! What’s a gal to do?

I had to be practical. If my blunt bangs looked like this photo most of the time, I would have kept them. However, they usually looked like this. Butt-part blunts, I liked to call them. So, I went back to the sideswept look, but kept them short enough that the bangs fall down on my forehead instead of sweeping across like a long layer.

p.s. – I love them and am very happy. Thank you for leading me down the righteous path!

p.p.s. – I filmed a tutorial this weekend for folica.com, so you can check out the bangs on video if you so desire.

p.p.p.s. – I’m giving away THREE styling irons from Sedu’s Precious Metal Collection later this week. Stay tuned!

Update — Heather

Here’s an update from Heather!

h_before

She took HT advice and got a smooth, slightly-angled bob.

heather_before

Isn’t it amazing what an inch and a different shape can do? Look at Heather’s cheekbones!

From Heather’s email:

I wanted to thank you so much for picking me and for the advice. I went with the cut you suggested and also tried out an at-home blonde color. I wasn’t too fond of the blonde though, so I redid the color as a Medium Chestnut Brown. Both colors had an orange tint…I had a lot of red/orange and gold in my hair naturally so the blonde came out really bad.

At first the Chestnut Brown was orange but it has since faded and my hair has taken on a really nice, almost like maple syrup, color…everyone loves it! I get compliments left and right! So I’m definitely sticking with the brown family. I appreciate the time you’ve taken to show my photos!

So glad you love your color, Heather! I do agree that the above shades looked a little brassy, but I’m sure the chestnut has mellowed into a gorgeous color. A word of caution to those of you wanting to apply an at-home color. The word “golden” can be very misleading at times. Hair guru Jason Backe recommends using Natural Instincts Brass Free color to get rid of those pesky orange tones. Here’s a great post by Jason showing how a brass-free color can eliminate brassy tones completely.

Thanks for your update, Heather!!

Update — Jen

Remember Jen?

jen_before

Jen is a working mom who doesn’t have much time to spend styling her hair, but wanted something fresh for the upcoming season. The majority of readers voted for a sleeker chin-length bob for Jen and she went for it.

I am loving the darker color and length, aren’t you? Fabulous! Thanks for the update, Jen!

Beauty Tips & Secrets from Fashion Designer Rachel Roy

FP_3190062_Sisters_Keeper_RAM_062409

Designer Rachel Roy has built a following for not only her beautiful designer and diffusion collections (Rachel | Rachel Roy is available at Macy’s and her website) but also her amazing personal style and beauty. Rachel dishes on how she expresses her Indian ancestry through her makeup, and as well as her personal tricks to looking bright, fresh and flawless.

Have you picked up any great beauty tips or tricks that you can share?

I feel a great mascara can open the eye and instantly make you look as though you’ve have a good night’s sleep, even when that is not the case.  I use 2-3 coats of Lancome’s Fatale on the top, bottom, and also on the back of the top lashes.

Do you have a beauty signature? A fragrance or a lip color that you just love to wear?

Because of my Indian ancestry, I love darkly rimmed eyes – a messy eye adds a sexy yet natural look to a classic outfit.  To make the eyes smoky, I use Revlon’s Luxurious Color Kohl eyeliner in Black Truffle on the inside of the lids.

What about a lip color that you just love to wear? What do you put on to achieve your favorite look?

Bright lipstick is a way to quickly pop an outfit and freshen up a look a la Ava Gardner in “The Barefoot Contessa.”  My favorite bright is MAC’s Morange lipstick – it’s a great way to add a twist to a classic look.

Any last bits of advice?

Another way to make your face pop is to fill in the eyebrows.  I use Bobbi Brown’s eye shadow in Navajo.
