Whoorl’s Packing Adventure

Thursday, December 6th

5:30 a.m. – Wake up. Still on East Coast time. Shower off the previous day’s airplane muck since I was too exhausted when I arrived home late.

5:45 a.m. – Chat with D for 5 minutes before he leaves for the new house to meet the contractor. He confirms that indeed the movers are arriving in 48 hours.

6:00 a.m. – Unpack toiletries from luggage. Just toiletries, though. Leave the rest in there. Might as well.

6:15 a.m. – Check Facebook. Twitter. Return emails.

6:45 a.m. – Too excited to wait any longer to see the kiddos. Stand outside their door, waiting to hear any sign of life. Wita coos.

6:46 a.m. – Bust in the room. Do a happy dance. We all jump for joy. Mommy’s home. Give them their presents. A Yoshi Remote Control Go Kart for Wito, and Wita’s first Barbie. (I bought Disney Princess Ballet Belle because she wears yellow, Wita’s favorite color. I probably should have bought her the regular princess dress Belle, but have you seen how much glitter is on those princess dresses? HELL TO THE NO ON THAT.)

7:00 a.m. – Make lunches for school. Get kids ready. Catch up on their week so far.

8:00 a.m. – Leave for school drop off. Drive straight home because it’s time to pack. For reals this time. NO MORE PROCRASTINATING.

9:00 a.m. – Eat some trail mix. Check Facebook. Check Twitter. Return emails. Organize inbox. Call my mom.

10:00 a.m. – Think about packing. Maybe I’ll start in the kitchen? Maybe I should tidy up the bedroom first? Yeah, that’s probably a good idea.

10:30 a.m. – You know, my body is still on EST. I should eat lunch. Sounds like a good day for In-n-Out. It will be a quick trip.

10:45 a.m. – Drive to In-n-Out.

11:10 a.m. – Return home. Eat lunch. Think about packing. It’s time to get serious. I have to leave in 3 hours to get the kids and THIS IS IT. Get crackin’, Sarah!

11:30 a.m. – Pack three boxes in the kitchen.

12:00 p.m. – Check Facebook. Check Twitter. Return a few emails.

12:20 p.m. – Freak out when I remember a realtor is showing the house at 2:30pm and it’s a wreck. (Of course it is. I’ve been gone for three days, remember?) Proceed to lightly clean entire house.

1:20 p.m. – You know what needs organizing? My purse. Clean it out – go through receipts. Call my mom. Watch a stop-motion Super Mario video on You Tube.

1:40 p.m. – It would probably be a good idea to run some errands before picking up the kids. I need to take care of some REALLY pressing issues like dropping off a package at the post office and returning a library book that is due in two weeks.

1:45 p.m. – Pack one box. (That makes a grand total of three if you’re counting.) Leave house. Run errands.

3:15 p.m. – Return from errands and school pickup. Feed kids snacks. Hang out. Make a few lists. Call my dad.

4:00 p.m. – Pack four boxes in the kitchen. Exhausting.

4:30 p.m. – Play a Thomas the Train/Barbie Belle/Super Mario Kart mash up with the kids. (This is the ULTIMATE display of procrastination, as I am just not a ‘get on the floor and play with the kids’ type.)

5:00 p.m. – Make dinner. Text D to bring home wine.

6:00 p.m. – D arrives. Looks a little confused since the house essentially looks like it did when he left at 6 in the morning. Crack open the wine. Drink wine.

6:30 p.m. – Pack a few more boxes because I’m feeling watched.

7:00 p.m. – Dance party with the kids. The Black Keys. Air guitar. Get them ready for bed.

7:30 p.m. – Kids down. Pull the time change card again. It’s 10:30 in New York! I’m exhausted! I need to sleep!

8:00 p.m. – Facebook. Twitter. Return a few emails. Oh, a sale at Madewell.com! Hmmm, did I ever receive credit for that return? Check credit card account. Check every existing online account in my name.

8:45 p.m. – Stare at the ceiling.

9:00 p.m. – Lights out. There’s always tomorrow. Maybe I’ll feel the pressure then.

Paper Culture Holiday Cards

Last year, we used Paper Culture for our holiday cards.

We loved them. Loved them! In fact, I’m fairly certain we’ll never use another company for our holiday cards for years to come. Why, you ask? Oh, let me tell you!

1. Truly the best collection of designs ever.

2. All cards and envelopes are 100% post-consumer recycled, and the company is CarbonFree.

3. All cards are printed on 130lb paper (feels great in the hand) and have rounded corners.

4. FREE MAIL AND ADDRESSING SERVICE. Yes, you provide them a spreadsheet of addresses and Paper Culture will print, address, stamp and mail your cards for you. Awwww, yeah. (You still pay postage for the cards, but no other fees.) Do you know how much time that saves? DO YOU? Especially the second year, when your spreadsheet is already made?

Look at some of the darling designs.

Pretty fantastic, right?

Now, apparently, D and I enjoy torturing ourselves because we prefer to capture the elusive Perfect Holiday Card Photo without the aid of a professional photographer. (What can I say? We’re neurotic.)  This year’s photo involved three locations, four cameras, an unexpected rain delay, 6 (failing) props to encourage smiling, including but not limited to, a talking Elmo doll and a furry King Charles Spaniel dog toy, and at least 17,000 meltdowns. (Did I mention I had a raging head cold? That we’re still getting over 9 days later? bleeerrrrrgh)

On the way home from our torturous shoot, we happened upon a completely awesome, beat-up blue wall. We grabbed some sidewalk chalk, let the kids go to town, and snapped some photos. Luckily, we captured one that we loved.

Hooray for semi-happy children looking at the camera! VICTORY IS OURS.

If you are looking for stylish and unique cards, please check out Paper Culture’s holiday cards. (By the way, they aren’t limited to just holiday cards by any means. Tons of stationary, invites, and these adorable bamboo wall art pieces.)

Just for you all, the lovely folks at Paper Culture are offering 20% off all cards through 12/31/11. Just use the code WHOORL at checkout, and you’ll receive 20% off your card order. Now you have NO reason to drag your feet in regards to holiday cards. Get to it!

Enter your code at checkout. Expires 12/31. Not combinable. Not applicable to taxes, shipping, handling or gift certificates. No cash value.

I’ll Miss You, Kauai

After an incredibly long red-eye (thank you VERY LITTLE, headwinds) and a near miss of my carefully-orchestrated Overlapping Layover Plan in Phoenix, in which my saintly mother flew with Wito to Phoenix from Oklahoma City to assist in the Official Toddler Tradeoff, we’re home!

I’m sorting through six days of photos and videos and receipts, but I have tips. Lots of tips! And hundreds of photos of scenery that I won’t bore you with, I promise.

(I also never told you the results of $300 Kauai shopping excursion. 7 tanks, 3 dresses/coverups, 2 bikinis, 2 chemises (ooh la la!), 1 pair of earrings, 1 pair of sunglasses and 1 pair of shoes later…the grand total equaled $320. I lost the challenge, peeps. And I honestly could care less.)

Until then, I will leave you a photo of the best drink I have ever had the pleasure of sipping, the Lava Flow from The Beach House.

The first, but definitely not the last.
