Wito has always been a good napper, and up until a few months ago, he was still snoozing for an hour or two every afternoon. Although I still believe he would be happy to nap on most afternoons, logistically it has become a little tricky. Wito and Wita share a bedroom, and although they sleep well together at night, their nap schedule doesn’t really jive. Compounded with the fact that the only other bedroom in the house happens to be the master which also houses my workspace, the boy doesn’t have a quiet, comfortable space to retire alone.
I still feel that a little downtime is good for him, so lately we’ve introduced Quiet Time from 2-3:30pm in my bed. While I’m putting Wita down for her nap, Wito fills his lanky preschool arms with all the books he can, runs into my bedroom and hops onto the big, fluffy bed, ready to read and daydream. After making sure baby Wita is off to dreamland, I quietly work across the room from Wito at my desk.
There is only one major rule in Quiet Time, and that is No Talking. As most of you know, Wito is a non-stop talker, so I really appreciate how hard he tries to suppress his urge to chat.
However, if I don’t have a pressing deadline looming, I let him cheat a tiny bit. I hop under the covers and we lie face-to-face, talking about everything under the sun.
Turns out my favorite part of Quiet Time isn’t quiet at all.

February 21, 2011 at 4:47 pmSo sweet. Rowan is only 2 but we share similar “quiet” moments, too. He’s learned how to whisper, so if he wakes up super early, I’ll bring him into our bed and we lay face to face, whisper-talking until he gets sleepy again. If it weren’t for this happening at 4 a.m., I’d be make this a daily requirement!

February 21, 2011 at 5:35 pmThat is exactly what we do, or try and do. I spend a lot of time reminding that it’s quiet time and that mommy needs to work. He works on books or magazines, plays with his tag reader, flips through flash cards…that kind of stuff. I guess it shouldn’t at all surprise me that Bonham and Wito do the same basic quiet time routine. The newest thing is now Bonham tells me that he’s not talking to me, he’s talking to himself. So I’m trying to learn to tune out…but I’m really wishing I could just get more quiet into the quiet time :)

February 21, 2011 at 6:20 pmThis is SO sweet and I can see it in my very near future. Mine will be 4 next month and some days it’s a 2 hour nap while others bring no nap at all. I think it’s the end of an era.
Folks told me when he turned 3 that he would be too squirmy to snuggle. SO not true. We snuggle and read. We snuggle and watch movies. I’m so glad he’s still so affectionate.
Today at the library, he was trying his best to use his whisper voice. I think he lost me as he was shuffling through a book. I heard the little rapid clomp of his boots and whisper “Mama, Mama….Mama I can’t see you.”
Great post! Adorable Wito as always.
Best,
Tina

February 21, 2011 at 10:32 pmFirst off…how awesome that your baby is such a great night time sleeper! How do they work sharing a room? This will be something that happens in our home one day.
I love ‘quiet time’. After I get home from a night shift, my little boy climbs into my bed and we read books and tell made up stories. Then he kisses me goodnight and off he goes for the day while I am fast asleep.

February 22, 2011 at 12:14 pmOne of my very favorite things to do with Hailey… Our chat time- under the covers, in our little fort :). (& not a fort that takes any time at all to assemble… or disassemble!)
