Quiet Time

Wito has always been a good napper, and up until a few months ago, he was still snoozing for an hour or two every afternoon. Although I still believe he would be happy to nap on most afternoons, logistically it has become a little tricky. Wito and Wita share a bedroom, and although they sleep well together at night, their nap schedule doesn’t really jive. Compounded with the fact that the only other bedroom in the house happens to be the master which also houses my workspace, the boy doesn’t have a quiet, comfortable space to retire alone.

I still feel that a little downtime is good for him, so lately we’ve introduced Quiet Time from 2-3:30pm in my bed. While I’m putting Wita down for her nap, Wito fills his lanky preschool arms with all the books he can, runs into my bedroom and hops onto the big, fluffy bed, ready to read and daydream. After making sure baby Wita is off to dreamland, I quietly work across the room from Wito at my desk.

There is only one major rule in Quiet Time, and that is No Talking. As most of you know, Wito is a non-stop talker, so I really appreciate how hard he tries to suppress his urge to chat.

However, if I don’t have a pressing deadline looming, I let him cheat a tiny bit. I hop under the covers and we lie face-to-face, talking about everything under the sun.

Turns out my favorite part of Quiet Time isn’t quiet at all.
