Meet Kellie.

kellie_before

Kellie’s hair:

Light-to-medium brown
Doesn’t want to deal with the financial upkeep of professional hair color
Thick, yet fine
Slightly wavy
Takes about 10-15 minutes to style
Doesn’t wear ponytails very often

From Kellie’s email:

I recently moved and am getting settled in a new city and in a new job. I also lost about 20 lbs recently and want to keep moving forward with the self improvements. With all these recent changes, I thought it might be fun to do something different my hair. I’m not afraid of losing some of the length, though I find going any shorter than just below the chin makes me look too young and is unflattering. Any thoughts on what kind of length or style would look good?

Oh, DO I have some thoughts for you, Kellie. It’s just that I keep forgetting them after staring at those gorgeous eyes!

Let’s focus on emphasizing those peepers, shall we? Take a look at these options.

I love the big bends and body throughout Hayden Panettiere’s soft, shoulder-grazing hairstyle. This style would look gorgeous on Kellie – it would play up her natural volume, but the length would keep the focus on her facial features. Also, Kellie should consider playing with a soft, smoky eye palette when applying her makeup. It’s not necessarily something she should bust out at her new job (hello, world! I’ve lost 20 pounds and I want to look sexaaaay at work!), but a muted grey or even a bronze smoky eye would look fabulous for a night out on the town!

Now, if Kellie wants to keep a little more length, Briana Evigan’s lustrous, shoulder-grazing hairstyle would be perfect. The sideswept bangs would totally accent her eyes and the layers would add subtle movement throughout – playing up Kellie’s slight wave. I would also recommend doing an at-home, demi-permanent color to slightly darken Kellie’s natural color. A rich brown would be beautiful for fall.

Tell Kellie what you think!

Meet the lovely Mia.

mia_now

From Mia’s email:

Since writing you last fall, I had my hair chopped to a short swing-bob. It was cute (or so I was told), but too much work. I’m now in the process of growing it out, with the ultimate goal being… I don’t really know?? Definitely not as long as it was in the first set of pictures I sent you, but longer than it is now. As I mentioned before I like to wear it wavy, so I’m looking for something that is conducive to that. Most of the time though, even when it starts off down and wavy, or down and straight, I end up putting it in a pony-tail, or bun. I’m all about the bun. It’s also really really light blonde, maybe too blonde? I don’t know…. So, I guess the issues I would like you and your readers to help me with would be 1) choosing a manageable style that I can stick with and 2) a color that works with my skin-tone (which is basically translucent).

Other mentionables:

Naturally dirty blond, with light blond highlights
Fine, but a lot of it
Naturally a little wavy, but with blow drying and a quick once over with a flat iron, it’s straight.
Wants to wear it wavy
Uses salon products for the most part –  Pureology, Kerastase, and Biolage

I love the shorter length on Mia! That bob really accentuates her beautiful features, but I totally understand the time commitment involved. Although I think she should keep it shorter than her first photo, I think we can find a happy medium that takes less time to style (less than ten minutes!), accents her loose waves, and is super chic.

Something like this, yes?

FP_3337829_Paltrow_Gwenyth_NYC_072909(2)

I think this shoulder-skimming style would look incredible on Mia. However, I do like Mia’s sideswept bangs, so it’s really up to her if she wants to grow out her bangs. Either way would look fab. This length still calls attention to her features, yet is long enough to pull into Mia’s coveted bun.

The burning question. How can she achieve this look in 10 minutes or less?

Friends, I give you the Recipe for Fine, Loose Curls. Drumroll, please.

1. Prepare hair with Bumble and bumble Tonic Lotion.

2. Work a small amount of Bumble and bumble Defining Creme through the hair, beginning at the nape, moving forward.

3. Spread through more sparingly as you reach ends and tease out waves.

4. Air-dry for natural separation. (Or blow dry with a diffuser if in a hurry.)

Tada! Beautiful, loose waves! That’s it, Mia. With your wave pattern, these two products are going to be a godsend.

As for the color, I think Mia could go a little bit darker, but not much. My guess is that Mia was a white-blond child because she wears the light blond very well. What do you think? Should Mia go darker or celebrate her blond?

You may have noticed this makeover post is following the old format. Well, I changed my mind. AGAIN. (I obviously have ever-changing thoughts regarding this blog. Come along for the bipolar ride! Wheeeeeeeee! ) I wasn’t really loving the new format and frankly, it wasn’t saving me any time. So, we’re back to the original format – one detailed makeover post per week on Thursdays. I mean, this blog IS called HAIR THURSDAY. I posted the revised FAQs here.)

Meet Elizabeth and her two previous hairstyles.

eliz_before

From Elizabeth’s email:

I’m attaching two photos: one with my current length – which is long. The shorter hair is from 2007, when I had a sort of Katie Holmes-ish cut, first with full, heavy bangs, and then side-swept bangs as they grew out. I loved that short hair, especially because I think it made my awfully fine hair look fuller. I do like the long hair, now that I’ve finally gotten past the awkward in between stages. My first question is whether there is a length or actual style that would be good for me. Now that my hair is long, the layers are remnants from shorter days, and it’s mostly just one length. But my other question is about BANGS. Now that my hair is long, I see the posts about ponytail-bangs and LOVE them. What I’m concerned about is my very short forehead combined with dark eyes, dark eyebrows, and non-subtle glasses. Bangs look so cute on other people! Can I pull them off?

Elizabeth. First off, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the shorter length on you. ADORE. However, I totally understand you wanting to rock the longer hair after the dealing with the annoying growing out phase. Just know that if you decide to chop again, I will be your number one supporter.

Back to the question at hand. Can you pull off bangs? ABSOLUTELY! Your shiny, fine, glossy hair will be a breeze to style with bangs, and since you previously had them, you already know how to style. Check out these two options.

Meet Cayce.

cayce_before

Cayce’s hair:

Light brown with a few warm blond highlights
Thick
Dry condition
Only washes 2-3x per week
Consistently uses a flat iron
Enjoying the longer length and option of a ponytail, although not opposed to short
Spends 35 minutes styling on wash days, otherwise 5 minutes
Uses Nexxus Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner and Pureology Straightening Serum

Cayce is a doll, isn’t she? She’s one of those lucky gals that can carry off many lengths with her face shape and hair texture.

From Cayce’s email:

The longer length is me today. The shorter length is from about 15 months ago. I have 4 kids 5 and under so I don’t want to be running to the salon every 6 weeks for highlights but I’m willing to keep up a cut if the shape is good. I LOVE the short cute bob hair but my tends to poof. I’m so ready to find a style that is “me” and stick with it.

Excuse me? FOUR KIDS aged 5 and under? I guess I need to quit whining about my ONE toddler who is driving me batty. Kudos to you, Cayce!

First off, I think Cayce’s color looks very nice with her complexion. I love the warm, golden highlights and don’t see the need to change since she doesn’t want to deal with extra upkeep. However, the one feature I keep focusing on is Cayce’s beautiful bone structure. Let’s take a look at the two options I chose to complement that structure.

81114A4_PALTROW_B-GR_11FP_457624_FP_SUPERMAN_77_062106

Option #1 – What a way to frame Cayce’s lovely face. Just grazing where the neck meets the top of the shoulder, Cayce could achieve this look by asking her stylist to cut a shoulder-length bob with texturizing throughout, which will remove most of the bulk and keep it relatively flat to the head. Also, the trick to keeping poof to a minimum is to flat iron the ends of the hair. As you are working down the hair shaft, give an extra squeeze towards the ends to eliminate any natural curl and/or volume. Plus, since Cayce only washes a few times per week, sleeping on this style will actually eliminate any residual poof!

Option #2 – Keeping the length, but adding sideswept bangs and more layering to accentuate Cayce’s eyes and cheekbones. This style would be very versatile for Cayce’s demanding lifestyle. She could wear it straight or use her beloved flat iron to create waves. (Yes, you can create waves with a flat iron!) On days that Cayce needs to wear a ponytail, the bangs will keep her ponytail looking stylish and chic, like so:

Decisions, decisions. I think Cayce would look darling with either of these hairstyles. Tell Cayce what you think!

Meet Celeste.

celeste_before

Celeste’s hair:

Naturally medium brown
Normal/oily condition
Wavy/Curly

When Celeste first wrote me in July 2008 (yes, there happens to be a 12-month waiting list right now UGH I’M SORRY), she was requesting advice on whether or not she should try a pixie cut alá Audrey Tatou. However, when I recently checked in with her, she wrote:

Right now, I’m actually thinking about growing it back. I haven’t had long hair since college, and then it was the heavy ’90 tent hair (which made me look a little like Cousin It – I’m 5’4”). I’m curious to see how I’d look with a longer layered cut, but deep inside I haven’t abandoned the idea of the pixie. I’m trying to let it grow for the next six months (if you have some suggestions on “transitional cuts” which don’t look like a helmet or a mullet, they would be immensely appreciated!) and then, if I don’t like what I see, I’ll go for the chop.

Don’t say another thing, Celeste! I’ve got a few chin-length or slightly longer styles for you to peruse.

ONE CAVEAT, THOUGH. Celeste described her hair as “wavy/curly”, which I don’t really see from her photos. (I’m wondering if maybe she flat-ironed it on photo day?) I think all of the following cuts could be achieved with either straight or wavy hair, depending on how much styling time you are willing to dedicate.
