Meet Jessica and her fantastic pixie. (And eyes and eyebrows.)

Jessica’s hair:

Dark brown with some gray; no coloring
She likes the gray and is keeping the gray. (LOVE THIS.)
Normal/dry condition
Fine with slight wave
Needs an easy hairstyle
Happy to use products, but doesn’t want to blowdry or style on a regular basis
Uses Bumble and Bumble curl creme and Jonathan Dirt

From Jessica’s email:

I’ve had various lengths of this same short ‘do for years now, and I’ve thoroughly loved it. But I’m in need of something new and am feeling the urge to grow it out to a messy/tousled bob, but am not sure if that will really work on my long, narrow face with my fine, thin hair. Can you help?? Thank you!!!

Jessica sent this photo as a possible option for her new hairstyle.

Jessica’s pixie really suits her, doesn’t it? The way it flaunts her facial features is downright perfect. Though, as we’ve addressed before, I totally get her boredom with her current hairstyle. Since she doesn’t want to color (and I wouldn’t recommend it), the tedious process of growing out must begin.

Side note: I love that Jessica doesn’t want to color her gray. I think it gives her pixie an edge and looks fantastic on her.

As for the proposed hairstyle, Jessica could rock that look completely. Her fine hair would lay well chin-length, the cut would complement her overall face shape, and the addition of her slight wave would give the movement and tousled look she is hoping to achieve without too much styling. The biggest hurdle for Jessica, however, will be the dreaded grow out phase, but adding some key products will help her to not lose her mind during the process.

Have you all seen this brand new product from Redken?

It’s called Wool Shake 08 Gel-Slush Texturizer and is pretty damn amazing for adding texture, hold and tousle. In a nutshell, it transforms flat and/or undefined hair to create lots of volume and texture. So, the stuff feels like slush in the bottle, but acts like a gel when sprayed on damp/dry hair. A product like this would be perfect for Jessica while growing out because it would help give control, but ultimately look super tousled and fun.

I would recommend Jessica picking some of this up for the long haul of growing out. HOWEVER, two more things.

1. I love the pixie. It could definitely be Jessica’s signature style.

2. Once grown out, her gray hair might appear completely different (in texture and color) than it did while short. Just some food for thought.

This is Beth with brunette hair.

beth_brunette

This is Beth with blonde hair.

beth_blond

Beth has sent a few emails inquiring if she should be a blonde or brunette.

From Beth’s most recent email:

Sending up another smoke signal. I am thinking of asking my husband to make my Christmas gift a trip to the salon to return to my inner blonde but I’m unsure. I have had a lot of feedback from friends, my husband and coworkers who like my hair dark, but my parents and my daughters like my hair blonde. I think I do, too, but am not sure. I need an impartial opinion.

I’m 36 years old and a working mom of two girls and wife to my brunette-loving husband. I want to look glamorous but without spending a ton of money or time. I need more volume but don’t want to look matronly. I felt pretty and vibrant with blonde hair. Not sure if brunette works on me.

Let’s take a look at both sides.

On one hand, Beth admits to liking her hair better when blonde. She feels pretty and vibrant, and we all know that is important.

On the other hand, she doesn’t want to spend a lot of money or time on her hair, and keeping up with blonde maintenance isn’t a cake walk. It also sounds like the majority of friends, family and coworkers prefer Beth as a brunette.

For me, I do have a preference. I much prefer Beth as a brunette. Her complexion looks perfectly peaches-and-cream, her blue eyes pop, and she exudes such a beautiful and sophisticated look in the brunette photo.

How I wish I felt the other way, so I could tell Beth what I think she wants to hear, but brunette is my preference. FINAL ANSWER.

(Although, Beth. How do you feel about the current blonded brunette trend? That could be the perfect compromise for you! Being a brunette doesn’t mean you need to have super dark hair. Think Audrina Patridge’s color for inspiration.)

Meet Sadie.

sadie_before

Sadie’s hair:

Reddish-blonde hair that naturally lightens/darkens with the seasons
Normal condition, thick and wavy
Would love to try a short or medium-length cut with bangs
Spends little-to-no time on hair

From Sadie’s email:

I am 19 years old and in desperate need of hair help.  I want something that is young, stylish and maybe a little funky.  I am sick of having the same long boring haircut. I have almost always had long hair, but I really REALLY would like to try out a short or even medium cut with bangs. The only problem is that whenever I cut my hair shorter than a couple inches bellow my shoulders, it poufs out and becomes straight-ish on top and curly frizzy under. It is a nightmare.

Sadie (love your name, btw), I think you could pull off a shorter look, depending on how much styling you want to endure on a daily basis. Here are two options.

For option #1, Charlize Theron‘s long bob has delicate curls and just the right amount of airy volume. I think this is the shortest Sadie would want to go, considering her hair type and heart-shaped face. The look is definitely sexy and youthful, and would totally accent Sadie’s natural waves. I would highly recommend Sadie using a curl cream to help define her waves and keep her hair from looking like a “poufy nightmare.” Pureology Real Curl would be a fantastic, but another less expensive option is La Coupe Define Curl Shaping Gel.

Now if Sadie isn’t ready to make the styling commitment that comes with a shorter bob, Emma Stone‘s side-parted hairstyle with sideswept bangs could give her a totally different look without sacrificing all of her length. Sideswept bangs are great for heart-shaped faces, and I would love to see Sadie’s natural highlights sweeping across her forehead.

I declare today Hair Tuesday, so let’s get rolling.

marie_before

Marie’s hair:
Dark brown, normal condition
Thick and straight with a minimal amount of wave
Willing to try something different
Loves ponytails because they’re easy

From Marie’s email:

I have a hair dilemma that I’d love to get your advice on. I’m a graduate student and I’m going on the academic job market this year for the first time. I’m 31 but frequently get mistaken for being an undergrad (by both professors and undergrads), and I’m looking for a hairstyle that will help me to look more like a potential colleague and less like a student.

The problem might be related to the fact that I’m very low-maintenance when it comes to my hair, nearly always putting it up in a half-ponytail or a ponytail, and often neglecting cutting it until I can’t stand it anymore. I’d be willing to try something dramatically different–bangs (which I haven’t had since 6th grade) or a much shorter length–and am willing to put more time and care into maintaining a hairstyle.

I think we can definitely find a more sophisticated look for Marie under one condition. Marie will need to keep her word and put more time into maintaining and styling her hair, because no matter what style I suggest, if she continually wears a ponytail like the above, she will continually look like an undergrad. (Hey, at least you look young, Marie!) However, it sounds to me that she is definitely ready for a change, so let’s look at the options.

Ohhhhh, I think Option #1 could be it. America Ferrera‘s shoulder length cut with cheekbone-grazing, sideswept bangs is total sophistication. The shape would work beautifully with Marie’s bone structure, don’t you think? All Marie would need is a large round brush, a blow dryer and a shine serum to achieve this look.

Option #2 is another great look if Marie chooses to keep her hair longer. Lindsay Price‘s piecey bangs add a whole new element to the look and would give Marie a style that could go both ways – sophisticated for work, but fun and flirty for when she’s not on the clock. Say hello to Anh.

anh_before

Anh’s hair:

Naturally very dark brown
Normal condition
Thick and straight
Uses styling tools
Spends anywhere between 15 minutes to an hour styling
Uses Catwalk Extra Strong Mousse to hold curl

Anh would like to try a short or medium length hairstyle, so I’ve taken the liberty of picking one of each for her.

anh_options

Option #1 – Eva Longoria‘s bob would look perfectly polished on Anh’s thick, straight hair. I love the smooth ends and the shorter layer in the front, which would accent Anh’s cheekbones.

Daily Makeover Key Styling Tip:

Step 1: Combine a dab of styling lotion with a few drops of shine serum and apply onto damp hair. Blow-dry two-inch sections with a round brush applying upward tension at the root for lift, then turn the brush several times to add subtle roundness to the length.
Step 2: Once dry, create a deep side part and run a flat iron over half-inch sections for sleek results.
Step 3: Apply a few drops of shine serum onto your hands and run your palms over your hair to smooth the surface and eliminate frizz. Tuck one side back.

Option #2 – If Anh is hesitant to go that short, Anne Hathaway‘s sleek bob would also give Anh a polished look without taking all of her length off.

Daily Makeover Key Styling Tip:

Step 1: Mix a dime-size amount each of leave-in conditioner and straightening cream along with a few drops of shine serum and apply onto damp hair. Blow dry two-inch sections at time with a vent brush to straighten out your hair.
Step 2: Once dry, set a sleek finish by smoothing a flat iron over half-inch sections and then slightly bend the ends under.
Step 3: Apply a few drops of shine serum onto your hands and then run your palms over your hair to smooth the surface and eliminate frizz.
