Erin’s hair:

Fairly straight with a hint of wave
Thick, normal condition
Thinking about layers
Not very product savvy

Erin is pregnant with her second child and is looking for a relatively manageable style, although she mentioned being more than willing to spend more time styling her hair. This is a GOOD thing, considering she is definitely wash-n-wear. (She uses NO conditioner in her hair! Quelle horreur! My hair weeps at the thought!)

First off, let’s start shampooing AND conditioning Erin’s hair. Conditioner will help keep ends hydrated, reduce frizz and keep tangles under control. However, you don’t have to employ the ol’ shampoo/condition tag team in the shower to achieve hair nirvana. Many leave-in products can be used post-shower too!

Some of my favorite conditioning products (leave-in and/or wash-out) are:

Infusium Moisturologie Conditioner, $6

Redken Color Extend Sun Sparkling Shield Leave-In Smoother, $11 (I’m taking this one to Palm Springs with me this weekend. Fantastic for protecting hair from sun and swimming!)

Cutler Protectant Treatment Spray, $21

Kerastase Nutridéfense Spray, $34

As for Erin’s new style, I definitely think she should keep the length. The addition of a new baby can be quite demanding, and I would hate for Erin to deal with the upkeep and styling of a shorter haircut.

I love the idea of giving Erin some layers throughout to create more movement and enhance her subtle wave pattern. Also, a few sideswept layers around the face would draw attention to her beautiful blue eyes and make her ponytails a little more stylish. (Let’s not deny it – the woman is going to be busting out some ponytails in the upcoming months.)

On most days, after using her NEW CONDITIONER, Erin should work a dab of a styling cream (such as Bumble & Bumble Styling Cream, $26) throughout her beautiful red hair and air-dry for a fun and wavy summer look.

Something like this.

Or if she’s in the mood to blow-dry for a sleek look, this would be fantastic.

Good luck, Erin! Be sure to send a photo update of your new style!

Meet Alicia.

Alicia is about this close to being the next inductee into The Fishing Club, but I do have a few small suggestions for her royal beautifulness. (Although, really. She could shave her head and still look gorgeous.)

Alicia’s hair:

Naturally medium-dark brown that lightens considerably in the sun
Dry, wavy and thick
Preferred long hair in the past, but open to a shorter cut after her wedding next year
Usual daily styling includes using curling cream and Fekkai glossing cream
Not very comfortable using styling tools
Lives in a hot and dry environment

When Alicia mentioned that her hair lightened easily in the sun, I instantly knew the addition of warm, golden highlights would be perfect for this summer. Nothing too drastic, lord knows I hate a striped look, but something that would complement her complexion and beautiful eyes.

Something to the tune of this.

I also think the addition of bangs (similar to the above photo) would draw attention to Alicia’s blue eyes. That coupled with long layers and highlights would be the perfect summer look!

(Tip: For texturized beachy waves, try Frederic Fekkai Limited Edition Marine Summer Hair + Aquanutrients Beach Waves or Redken Layer Lift 07.)

I’ve got a question for you. Do you have a favorite drugstore hair product for creating a beachy look? Do tell!

Meet Lisa. Look at this lovely face.

Let’s take a gander at her hair, shall we?

It’s long. Like halfway to Crystal Gayle long, but I must admit, it’s damn pretty.

Lisa’s hair:

Loooooong
Naturally dark brown and straight
Thick, normal condition
Open to all lengths
Spends 5 to 10 minutes styling
Uses no products or tools except for a brush

When I received Lisa’s photos, I knew I could have pulled the drastic change routine. You know, the You-Must-Chop-Two-Feet-Off-Your-Hair-Immediately! kind of routine. Truth is, I HATE that routine. It reminds me of this old makeover show on Lifetime when stylists would literally butcher participants’ hair for the sake of drama. I always felt so bad…watching those poor ladies try to keep it together while some douchebag turned a perfectly good head of hair into an over-highlighted, over-layered, flippy mess.

To that, I say Hell to the No. I’m still going to recommend a good amount be taken off, but no frosted bobs will be seen today.

Let’s take a look at the options.

These are very similar hairstyles, give or take some long bangs and layering around the face.

Option #1 would take Lisa’s hair up to chest level with some light layering throughout to add some natural movement to her otherwise straight hair.

Option #2 is the exact same concept except with some cheekbone-length layers to draw attention to Lisa’s pretty facial bone structure. I would not recommend cutting bangs any shorter at this point in time. Lisa’s hair has been weighed down for so long, any sudden bang-cutting could be an initial catastrophe.

However, after the cheekbone-length layers are cut for a month or two, Lisa could have a few more sideswept bangs added to the mix which look very nice with a ponytail.

Something else Lisa could do to accentuate her lovely features is to have her eyebrows shaped. Her shiny new hairstyle coupled with shaped brows will take her from a subdued beauty to a knockout!

Tell Lisa what you think! Which option do you like best?

I must admit – I am super excited to see the results. Have a great Memorial Day weekend, everyone!

Meet Lauren, our April inductee into The Fishing Club.

Lauren’s hair:

Perfect
Perfect
Perfect

Listen, Lauren. I feel for you and your hair issues. REALLY. It looks like life must be incredibly challenging on the follicular front…here let me get you a tissue. WAHHHHHHHHHHH.

Oh, I kid. Lauren does have a very relevant issue when it comes to styling her hair. It’s super duper DRY.

In Lauren’s own words, “So, I guess basically, my problem is that I have to work hard to get my hair to look presentable, so by the time I’m done, it feels like straw. If I could have soft hair, that’d be awesome.”

Oh, do I have the product line for you, Lauren. Redken recently introduced Real Control – the line that reclaims control of dense, dry, sensitized hair. It totally repairs and transforms the texture of high-maintenance hair, leaving it SOFT and shiny. There are several products in this line, but I would recommend trying out the shampoo and conditioner, as well as the Overnight Treat Night Recovery Treatment.

As for styling products, considering Lauren uses her flat iron religiously, two of my personal favorites are Redken’s Satinwear 02 Ultimate Blow-Dry Lotion and Hot Sets 22 Thermal Setting Mist. In fact, I used both of those products in this video.

(p.s. – Redken, you have really been impressing me lately.)

Now, Lauren also mentioned wanting a great product to bring out her waves, and sorry Redken, but my two all-time favorites for enhancing waves are Aveda Be Curly and Pureology Real Curl. (I accidentally packed my brand new Be Curly in my carry-on bag and it had to be confiscated. Talk about WAHHHHHH.)

So! Product recommendations galore on this lovely Thursday.

Because I love you all endlessly, I am giving away a full-sized Redken Real Control shampoo, conditioner and an Overnight Treat recovery treatment. Leave a comment on this post before Monday, April 20th at 5pm PST and you will be entered to win. Now, get to it!

Meet Amy.

I love this chick. Look at her rocking the whoorl curl!

Amy’s hair:

Super dark brown
Normal condition
Thick – tends to poof while drying
Minimal wave
Would love longer hair, but has had shorter styles most of her life
Enjoys the versatility of longer hair
Uses a flat iron when straightening
Uses FF Glossing Cream

Amy is a super stylish gal and I like her hair. Given her personal style, she really could pull off a lot of looks, and I really want her to take it to the next level. You know, something that complements her new birthday tattoo. In all honesty, I think this haircut would be fantastic, but it might be bit too much for her (or for YOU WEENIES).

First things first. I can tell from the straight hair photo that her hair needs to be texturized a little more. It’s still a little too heavy when she straightens it. Don’t get me wrong – Amy has really great hair, but it just needs to be cut into a little bit. She mentioned how it becomes the dreaded triangle during the grow-out process, and I promise that heavier texturizing would eradicate that issue.

I also like to see movement around Amy’s face. The wave looks very nice with her face and forehead shape, but she complained that her hair doesn’t hold curl very well.

So, what to do…

If Amy wants to keep longer hair, I would suggest heavy texturizing and piecey-er (wow, that is NOT a word) bangs. Just something to give her style a little more oomph, ya know? Like so:

Love the bangs, love the length, love the texturized layers. Yep. I like this one. Except I would like to see a little more volume/movement, which I think would be a breeze for Amy to achieve with her specific hair texture and thickness. (Especially after texturizing.)

Now, if Amy wants to go shorter, I would recommend something like this:

I chose this specific photo of Katie Holmes because I like how it’s not super straight and has a little movement throughout.

What do you think? Long or short?

(I’m on a plane to Hawaii today. Awww yeah.)

Laura’s hair:

Naturally mousy brown. Dyes it dark brunette
Normal-to-oily hair
Very thick, naturally curly
Prefers length
Would straighten her hair every day if time permitted
Always straightens her bangs and if she wears it curly, she “corrects” a few curls in the front with a curling iron
Uses mousse

Okay, let’s begin. I can’t tell if it’s the lighting in the photos or what, but the color in the second (straight) photo is sublime. Shiny and chocolate and gorgeous and not brassy and RECREATE THAT COLOR HOWEVER YOU CAN, LAURA.

As for the cut, let’s take a little off (2-3 inches) and do something different with the bangs.

I’m just not loving the piecey bang look on Laura. I think she would look much better with sideswept bangs (especially with her wavy/curly hair) or no bangs at all. I used photos of straight hair to show off the layering in the front, but I think both of these hairstyles would look great worn naturally curly.

I would suggest Laura grow her bangs out in a sideswept fashion (#1) – that way they can blend with the rest of her hair throughout the process. Additionally, layering throughout will keep her long hair current without the risk of looking too bulky or dated.

Aloha!
