I Wear Birkenstocks Almost Every Day

If you follow on Instagram, you may have noticed that an old, familiar friend from college reentered my life a few months back. (Except this time I’m not wearing said friend with marbled wool socks and J. Crew rollneck sweaters while listening to Phish.) I think my Instagram comment says it best:

So here’s the thing about Birkenstocks. You buy a pair, promising yourself you won’t wear them all the time, except that they actually make your old lady back feel much better, and thus you become the chick who always wears Birkenstocks.

Yep, that’s me. The chick who wears Birkenstocks.

But, COME ON. They are pretty dang cute, right? And if you haven’t noticed, Birkenstocks are making a huge comeback right now. (Don’t just take my word for it!)

Forget the cuteness factor for a bit, and let’s talk comfort. My sore, old lady back feels 100 times better when I wear these shoes regularly, and I’m not remotely kidding. I LOVE MY BIRKENSTOCKS AND WILL SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS.

It’s summer, you guys. Get a pair. Make it happen. Your feet and back will thank you tremendously. They come in about one trillion colors, so you’ll be sure to find a good match. (I personally have the black and stone. Because one pair just isn’t enough, people. You gotta trust me on this one.)

I told myself after high shool I would never wear them again. It took 15 yrs but all of a sudden I have three pair. In their defense they have made some really nice styles since then. I love them for to and from yoga

I just bought my first pair 2 weeks ago after not wearing them since college. And I love them. I have the Black Patent with the pink sole. So cute and mostly they are so comfortable.

Yep. Bought the Mayari sandal saying I’d only wear them around the house. Every.Day. They’re on my feet, out in public, out to dinner, everywhere. And a pair of Gizeh’s are on their way. Because one pair just isn’t enough. :)

I never saw myself in Birkenstocks, but they really are pretty cute these days. I jumped on the bandwagon and recently bought the same pair you have on in this photo in bronze. They took a couple wears to break them in and now…they’re awesome.

I had Birkenstocks for as long as I can remember. In Germany, there are still – by some – considered mostly “house shoes”, but with all the new colors and styles, they quickly become favorites for everyday wear!

I love my Birkenstocks! I have a pair of the Mayari and I get so many compliments. I also consider them to be the ultimate in Pregnancy footwear- so supportive. Now you have me itching to get another pair.

I’M SO GLAD! I always thought they were so comfy and was totally bummed when I got picked on, lol. Good thing I’m now a proud hippie. Time to buy new ones!

I have two pairs of Gizeh and love them dearly! I hadn’t worn them since high school but I’m so glad I bought a pair again a few years ago.

Sing it!!! I’ve got a few pair as well, though the ones like you have on tend to hurt between my toes. I think I need to add some foam or something to the plastic. But, the others, love them all! I first got them when standing on the tile in the kitchen for too long was hurting my back. They are great for high arches and achy backs.

I have a pair of metallic (copper?) Gizeh’s and my husband has the classic style. Is it dorky that we basically always wear them? Who cares!

I’ve had 2 pairs of Gizehs for years, and they are awesome. Silver and shiny red. So cute and comfy! Just always feel bad when I get caught in the rain with them.

Since college, I used to wear mine only occasionally, but a couple years ago when I was pregnant, they became the only shoes that were comfortable. I have since replaced nearly all my shoes with Birkenstocks or their offshoot brands like Footprints. Seriously, ALL my shoes. Nothing works for my arthritic foot.

I wore birks as a child as my parents were total hippies. I swore I would never wear them as an adult but my mom convinced me to try some on a few weeks ago. Now I am a daily wearer. The soft soles, ahhhhh!

Sarah!!! I saw your instagram post and bought some the next day. I always wear flip flops but I haven’t lost all my baby weight after kiddo #3 and the extra lbs along with a cheap pair of Old Navy flip flops meant lots and lots of lower back and joint pain. These solved my problems and I have worn them almost everyday since. I am ready for a second pair and I’m trying to convert all my girlfriends. Thank you so much!

Gizeh’s are my go-to comfort sandal. I wear them all the time on the weekends and sometimes to work too. Absolutely love them. I think the style is actually pretty cute too!

I’m so tired of reading about birkenstocks. They were ‘hip and trendy’ last spring/summer, now everyone is wearing them. When mass retailers are making them, they aren’t unique anymore, but pedestrian. The Gizeh ones you are wearing in black aren’t terrible. But not cute. Not sexy.

When my 60 year old aunt is still wearing them, never stopped wearing them, that’s not a trend I’m going to jump on.

My mom is German and Germans have worn these forever ! In Hospitals (my mom was a nurse) everyone wore them. And I thought they were so ugly…And now many years later, my 45 year-old-back LOVES THEM. I don’t really care anymore about delicate fancy shoes ( I end up returning almost every pair of shoes I buy!!!) , I just want to be COMFORTABLE ! The secret so people don’t notice your “ugly” sandals is just to wear more bright lipstick ! And lots of nice perfume ! That is my trick !!! And yes, you need more than ONE PAIR ! They have them in patent leather too !

I just read your post on gratitude and you are my first thank you.
Thank you (from the heart) for writing your get-well posts. They are helping me a lot !!!

I’ve had the same pair of Birkenstocks since 2008 and this year, caved and bought a new pair while my old ones get resoled.
My pampered earthy-crunchy granola feet were *not* ready to break in new ones. Ow. (Absolutely worth it, yes, but still. Ouch. I must’ve gotten an extra stiff new pair to work with this time.)
