The Best Organic Masks for Your Skin Type
Y’all know I’m a huge fan of masking. I mask at least 3-4 times a week and I’m absolutely confident it makes a huge difference in my skin. However, there are so many on the clean beauty market…which one should you try? Never fear! I’m here to help you sort through the best organic masks for your skin type and/or concern. Let’s do this thing!
May Lindstrom The Problem Solver – This is the one mask that makes me feel like a broken record. I mean, how many times can I sing the praises of this wonder? BUT ‘TIS SO GOOD.
A jet-black fusion of antioxidant-rich raw cacao, salts, exotic spices, and activated bamboo charcoal brightens, heals inflammation and irritation, fades hyperpigmentation, stimulates collagen production, and treats and prevents breakouts.
The Problem Solver is a real miracle worker, as you will see a definitive difference in your skin from the first go-round. The formula is intense, though! You might feel the warming ingredients going to work while it’s on, but it never upsets my skin. (Not gonna lie, the first time I tried it, I was afraid the slight tingling was a bad thing, but no no no. My skin isn’t even slightly red when I remove it.) One of the great skin beautifiers in this mask is cayenne pepper. Yep! Cayenne stimulates circulation, enabling fresh blood, oxygen, and vital nutrients to reach the cells.
However, despite being warming and intense, it completely restores balance to even the most delicate complexions. It is especially beneficial for those of you that struggle with severe acne, rosacea, psoriasis and all types of inflammatory disorders. It really does it all and it’s a must-have for all complexions.
This mask comes in a powdered form, so you just mix with water before applying. Also, it lasts forever (mine usually lasts a year or more) so the price tag is totally justified.
African Botanics Mineral Cleansing Mask – New to me in late 2019, this has quickly become one of my very favorite masks. Created to be a decongesting and anti-inflammatory mask, this clay formulation tones, nourishes and refreshes my skin when it’s looking super fatigued. A lot of clay masks can be too “pulling” on me – making my skin feel super dry and taut, but this one somehow manages to do the exact opposite! My skin feels nourished and looks super clear and balanced after using this mask. I repeat, NO dehydration or irritation after using this mask. Just super happy skin.
Also, it visibly reduces my pore size, reduces redness, and gives my skin a healthy glow! The minerals in this mask help restore skin’s density to regain its firmness, protect cell DNA, plump and stimulate cellular turnover. Soothing Damask Rose, Cape Rose Geranium and Tangerine help balance and revive parched skin, and the antioxidant and omega-rich fusion of glow-inducing Marula, Baobab and African Bush Plants moisturize, strengthen, brighten, firm and refine the skin. (Also contains high concentrations of Copper and Magnesium renowned for their skin purifying properties!)
I leave this mask on for about 10-15 min and then add warm water and lightly massage using a circular motion to gently exfoliate. Bonus – it has the most pleasant cooling effect when you have it on – emphasis on pleasant, not at all an “omg my face is freaking burning off” one. (We’ve all been there at some point, right?) You can use it up to 3 times per week.
Tata Harper Clarifying Mask – This mask is fantastic for those with acneic or congested skin. I love it a few times a month to clear any congestion. Great as a spot treatment too. This mask balances sebum and controls excess oiliness on the surface of the skin, as well as calm and relieving the appearance of redness. Salicylic acid minimizes the appearance of blemishes and you can thank Chlorella for the beautiful green color, which nourishes and hydrates the skin with essential vitamins and fatty acids. Don’t forget the AHA superfruit blend and lactic acid that refines the appearance of pores. Ladies, this one is a winner.
Kypris Deep Forest Clay Mask – This mask was created to detoxify, brighten, soften, smooth, exfoliate, and gently dissolve congestions. Deep Forest Clay detoxifies skin with cleansing clay, mineral-rich oceanic salt, soothing algae, botanical exfoliants, medicinal trees, roots, leaves, and flowers. This mask smells EXACTLY like a pine forest and I’m obsessed. Please make this into a fragrance, Kypris!
For a detoxifying mask, I leave on my skin for up to 20 minutes and it never irritates my skin. (If sensitive, try 5 minutes.) Massage as you rinse with a warm washcloth! You can use up to 3 times per week.
True Botanicals Pacific Glacial Clay Mask – New in 2020, I was so excited to get my hands on this beauty. I am so pleased that the old days of clay masks stripping the life out of your skin are totally gone. These new clay masks manage to purify and detoxify WITHOUT sucking the life out of your skin and feeling like your face is going to crack off.
This gentle detox mask clears away dirt, pollutants, and other impurities while restoring (not removing) essential moisture, thanks to ultra-fine glacial clay. Skin is left instantly clearer, softer, and glowier. Enough said!
Beautycounter Balancing Charcoal Mask – Ten minutes to a purified complexion, ladies. This nutrient-rich kaolin clay mask deep-cleans and balances, absorbing excess oil and drawing out impurities. Activated charcoal minimizes the appearance of pores, giving skin a smooth, refined appearance, while salicylic acid stimulates exfoliation.
Perfect for those concerned with congestion and oily skin, and this one definitely pulls. You have some blemishes and blackheads and want those things gone? BAM, look no further. I use this mostly as a spot treatment because it’s almost too strong for my sensitive skin. #delicateflower
Laurel Brighten Mask – A beauty blogger friend of mine used this mask every morning for a month and you would not believe how much her sunspots and hyperpigmentation diminished. I was utterly shocked, so I bought it pronto. It is nothing short of amazing for brightening and fading pigmented spots on the face – this mask is bursting with Vitamin C and all of its vital cofactors to lighten discoloration with delicate raw fruit acids. Its phytonutrient density works to repair discoloration damage on a deeper level, while it strengthens and firms connective tissue. The concentrated vibrancy of this mask is truly unmatched and benefits are seen after as little as one use.
If you have sun-damaged, mature, and/or scarred skin, this is the one for you. Also, did I mention 100% Whole Plant Organic ingredients?!
Mahalo The Petal Mask – This is a rich and decadent pre-mixed face mask that brings out the look of natural glow and vitality. It melts luxuriously on the skin and dries to a pink sheen, without a feeling of pulling or tightening, which is so nice for those with dry and/or sensitive skin. Also, the longer you leave it on, the more it seems to beautify your skin. The base of enzyme-rich honey makes skin feel silky smooth and moisturized, while rose clay and cacao leave the complexion feeling soft and gently detoxified.
Floral essences of rose, hibiscus, chamomile, jasmine, ylang-ylang, and rose geranium are perfectly arranged to create the ultimate skin beautifier, gentle enough to apply several times a week. Such a beautiful mask!
Leahlani Meli Glow – Get yer glow on, mamas. This illuminating nectar fusion mask, filled with enzyme and vitamin-rich tropical fruits, nutrient-dense beauty oils, hyaluronic acid, and stimulating clays is next level for illumination. Meli works at the molecular level to increase blood circulation and oxygenation, and deeply nourishes and strengthens the barrier of your skin.
This works great on all skin types, but especially dry, combo, or mature skin. I love this one for a quick glow!
Leahlani Mermaid Mask – Just look at the deep emerald green. Could there be a more beautiful color? The Mermaid Mask is a superfood treat for all skin types – a nutrient dense blend of superfood ingredients that will strengthen the skin cells, boost circulation, fight breakouts and moisturize. It’s a little powerhouse, but gentle enough that I feel comfortable letting my daughter join in on the fun.
The deep, emerald color comes from two superfood ingredients, organic chlorella and organic spirulina. The spirulina comes from a farm on the pristine coast of Hawaii and is grown in a biosecure zone. Also, Leahlani uses the cleanest and most pure source of organic chlorella on the planet, which is grown in outdoor pools under the sunlight and contains cell walls that are “opened” or “cracked” using a specific process that preserves nutrients and increases absorption.
This is the mask I turn to when I’m less about specific treatment goals and more about glow glow glow. My daughter loves it too – she is always wanting to get in on the mermaid action.
Pro tip: be sure to add a little bit of water to emulsify the mixture before applying. The product itself is very dense and so super-packed with ingredients that I scoop a little bit into my fingers and drop a teensy bit of water into it which makes it easier to spread.
Josh Rosebrook Cacao Antioxidant Mask – Ohhhhh, this mask is so unique. Where do I even begin? Last year, I did a video on my favorite masks, and I talked about this one blowing me away. Well, it continues to do so. This mask makes you glow like nothing I’ve ever seen…it actually brings the blood to the surface of the skin, and I will repurchase this forever ever and ever amen.
This activating (you will definitely see the blood reach the surface of your skin!) facial treatment works to detoxify, rejuvenate and purify skin through powerful antioxidant and phytonutrient plant synergies. Rich cacao antioxidants help slow skin cell decline and assist in collagen production to increase elasticity and luminosity. Cacao effectively stimulates and triggers circulation which assists in nutrient delivery, and supports the skin’s natural healing ability. This mask works on all skin types including sensitive and dry.
Josh Rosebrook Active Exfoliator – Friends, I can promise you it’s a very rare occurrence if this mask isn’t on my face every Sunday. This exfoliator supports the feeling of healthy cell turnover with enzymes from honey, papaya, yucca, beetroot and elderberry that naturally soften and brighten the skin’s appearance. And man, it does its job – my skin looks brand spanking new (not a dead skin cell in sight!) when I wash this off my face. (Even my husband loves it! Did you see our video together?)
The great thing is that this mask is a chemical (natural enzymes like papaya) and physical (very finely milled walnut shells) exfoliant, so you’re getting the best of both worlds. I’ve tried A LOT of exfoliators, and this one is seriously impressive.
True Botanicals Resurfacing Moisture Mask – Anyone out there looking for a pore minimizer? Um, look no further. This pup is a facial in a jar. This lactic acid-based mask reveals smooth, glowing skin in only five minutes. It moisturizes while exfoliating and imparts a serious glow. Key ingredients are lactic acid, avocado butter, and Astaxanthin.
Here’s the absolute truth on this one – if I can remember to put this on my face for a measly 3-5 minutes when I wake up in the morning, my skin looks insanely amazing. Seriously, I used it 4-5 times a week for a couple of weeks a while back and my skin never looked better. Now if just could remember to put it on every morning… #thisis45
Orgaid Sheet Mask Multi-Pack – For all my ladies who love a good sheet mask, the multi-pack by Orgaid is fantastic. This pack contains two of each ORGAID Organic Sheet Mask (2 Anti-aging & Moisturizing, 2 Greek Yogurt & Nourishing, and 2 Vitamin C & Revitalizing). A great way to find your favorite or treat your specific concern as it comes up.
Well, there you have it. Love all these masks something fierce – if you have any questions about which one is right for you, don’t hesitate to leave your question in the comments!
