Although things are moving along and really exciting, I don’t have many updated photos for a blog post. However, look!
The great news is that the drywall is up, the new wood floor is in, new doors hung, window casing finished, and all of the walls have been putty-coated and primed! We originally weren’t going to putty coat all the walls, but ultimately decided on keeping everything consistent with the new and old walls, so that added an extra week. However, painting time starts very soon! Woohoo! We are going between Dunn Edwards White (DEW380) and Whisper (DEW340).
Another exciting addition that we’ve added to the list is redoing the sad, little laundry room off the kitchen. Here are some before shots.
We are buying an Electrolux washer and dryer, replacing the swinging door with a pocket door, and will add custom shelving around the appliances and up the wall. Now, you all know I’m a freak about organizational details, right? For example, when D brings up major, big-picture issues, I repeatedly interrupt with questions like, “where am I going to keep all my spices? (But where am I, people? It’s critical!) These are the details that I love more than life, and it’s ridiculous how excited I am about – get this – little built-in cubbies that will sit between the dryer and the exterior door for the purpose of housing our shoes. HOW EXCITING IS THAT? CUBBIES FOR SHOES! NO MORE OF THIS!
Tears of joy, man.
We are also continuing the wood floors into the laundry room, taking out the sad old exterior door, and adding a Dutch door. (That will be painted ochre yellow. Dying.)
So, that’s really about it this week. We are a little hung up on what to do with the guest/kids bathroom floor…this bathroom didn’t make the cut for renovation, except for the flooring. The countertops and shower are original tile, which we don’t mind because it fits with the feel of the house, but we need to find a floor that complements the retro vibe. Most importantly, something that complements the style of the bathroom AND is inexpensive, as we will probably redo the entire bathroom in a few years when the kids are a bit older. Anyway, this got me looking at bathroom floors, which pulled me into a deep vortex of unbelievable custom mosaic limestone and marble. Holy macaroni – not something we will be doing, but you should check out these bathroom floors. They are ah-mazing.
Have a good weekend!

October 19, 2012 at 7:31 amGod I am loving these updates. I’m buying an older home built in 1925 – CLOSING TODAY! but doing nothing to it (other than fixing the fireplace that evidently could burn down the house if used). I can’t afford much else after the purchase, but thankfully am pleased with it for the most part. Your kitchen, though, is my dream kitchen. Best of luck!

October 19, 2012 at 7:53 amI am loving these pics and home reno’s are my obsession. I’m always dreaming up new projects in our house. My husband cringes every time I get that far away look in my eyes while standing in the middle of a room daydreaming of tearing walls down, reconfiguring floor plans, paint, etc. Anyway, your home is going to be amazing and your kitchen sounds like it will be pure perfection! Keep the pics and updates coming!!

October 19, 2012 at 8:43 amJulie, we’re closing on our house today too! Ours was built in 1919, so I feel you on wanting to do sooooo much to it, but having to go slow. We’re having the floors screened and varnished, but that’s about it before we move in next week, so… it should be a fun next few years. :) Congrats on the close!
Whoorl, I looooove these updates, shiny pictures or not. I keep joking (but not really) to my husband that if he doesn’t want my shoes to clog up our entryway, then I need a dedicated shoe room — in my dreams, it’d be filled with cubbyholes (like a wine cellar!) and, ooh, be mechanized so you could choose the ones you want in a computer and it’d rotate it to the front… like her closet in Clueless!
