Last night, I hopped in bed with the October issue of In Style magazine and oh my lord, the 32-page hair special was divine. Chris McMillan (Jennifer Aniston’s hair stylist) used the curling iron technique, except he clamped the hair mid-shaft before curling, leaving the ends free. Very interesting – I will need to try that soon.

I must get to work on tomorrow’s participants (both are undeniably fabulous ladies), but I wanted to conduct an informal poll in the meantime. In Style conducted a survey of more than 2,200 women about their hair. Granted, the 2,200 women were In Style readers, who are probably more invested in their personal upkeep than the general public.

Yet, I was still shocked to see that of these 2,200 women, 78% colored their hair. Wow! That number seemed astronomical to me (probably because I’m in the 22% category).

Does that ring true with you? Tell me, do you currently color your hair, whether it be highlights, permanent or semi-permanent color?

I haven’t colored my hair in a while…but it is definitely time to do it again. I have blonde hair but it looks a lot less “sunny” than in days of old. I would describe the current shade as “blah.”

Highlights & low lights for me. More low than high lately – I’m liking the richer tones – the blond streaks were getting too brassy for me. I am not good at upkeep & go too long between touch ups, but no one seems to notice.

I’ve been coloring my hair since high school in one way or another–Kool-Aid streaks, semi-permanent color at home, highlights at the salon, lowlights at the salon, etc. Why? Because it’s fun! For the record, I had dark blonde hair as a child, and now have naturally medium brown hair. I am not going gray yet.

I bought a curling iron and have no idea why – nor HOW to use it on my head of growing out hair.

    *sigh*

You people with hair kill me.

And? I colored my hair from age 19 to 29. TEN YEARS OF COLOR. Why? Oh, because my grey hair is in a race to take over my head. And winning.

Trying to figure out why I had to follow your sexpot lip splatter (or whatever) link. Trying to justify spending $23 on lip gloss. Tell me why I need it more than Almay’s $6.00 lip gloss.

I started in high school with the cheap Clairol drugstore kits, and turned my hair various shades of orange, aubergine, and straw-yellow, before seeking professional help around the post-college years. Ever since then, I have had my hair professionally colored. My natural color is a darkish blonde/light mousy brown and it gets dark and dull in the winter (which lasts about 6 months ’round these parts), so I have been getting golden/caramel highlights for years. I don’t even really know what my natural color looks like anymore, except that I know I hated it.

i love dyeing my hair! my natural colour is a very boring, flat, dark, brown with no shine or highlights. i color it reddish, usually. whenever i get it done after waiting too long since the last time / having another ill-advised return to my natural hair color, i get loads of compliments and people who say “oh, you were dyeing your hair brown before?” because i apparently look more natural as a redhead. yaaaaay pale irish genes.

I found my first gray hair at 16, and shortly thereafter, started down a long road of temporary colorings. I went back and forth between coloring it myself and having it professionally done, or not doing it at all when money was too tight. During my pregnancy, my hair grew insanely fast and the gray seemed to pop out more (she wasn’t even here yet and was giving me grays?! not.fair!) and everyone and their brother saw fit to point it out to me. A month or so after giving birth, I went and had it dyed a deep auburn shade (I’m naturally dark brunette), but funds have been tight and I haven’t been back in the last four months. I don’t feel like keeping up with it, to be honest. It’s just too much work and too much money. I need to find peace with my premature gray.

I have virgin hair. And it’s blonde. But don’t hate me–I also have a big jelly 3-baby belly. Thankfully I have good hair.

My aunt colored her hair for years and years to cover grey (she’s 51). She stopped doing it recently–can’t remember why–and was AMAZED at the way it changed her energy level, memory, and overall happiness. She thinks the chemicals were affecting her brain. Anyone else hear of or experienced similar?!
