Over 40? Get These Masks On Your Face STAT!
Welcome to the #CleanOver40 Series! After MANY conversations about the unique challenges women over 40 experience in terms of beauty and wellness, my good friend Lisa from This Organic Girl and I are teaming up to bring you the most effective clean skincare, makeup, and lifestyle products for those of us fortysomethings. This series will publish the second Monday of every month so be sure to stop by for the latest. You can also search #CleanOver40 on our blogs to access the entire series. Be sure to tag #CleanOver40 on social with your favorite picks as well…we ladies of a certain age need to stick together!
All three of these masks will be given away to two winners! See below on how to enter!
Alright, ladies. It’s time to talk about my favorite overall skin treatment, masking. Are you masking on a regular basis? If not, what in the sam hell are you waiting for? I mask around 3-5 times a week and it is truly the gamechanger of all gamechangers. Why? Well, because you can specifically treat your current issue. Woke up with a red face? Mask. Have a killer zit? Mask. Face looks like a desert scape? By all means, MASK.
Though, for the record, masking shouldn’t be an only 40+ thing. Even though Lisa (are you following her blog and Instagram?!) and I are forty-somethings, masks benefit peeps of ALL ages.
However! Since this is a #CleanOver40 post, I am going to share my most-used masks since turning 40. And you know these three must be good because Lisa picked the same ones! The cool thing, though, is that Lisa and I have different skin types, so they really must be all-around stars.
Since turning 40, my skin has become quite reactive when it comes to treatments. Some masks that I used repeatedly with ease in the past now make my face so incredibly hot and angry. In fact, there have a couple of times that I thought something slightly terrible was about to go down and couldn’t leave my house for the rest of the day after removing it. What gives, temperamental skin? Geez.
I want all my sensitive ladies out there to know that you are in excellent, gentle (yet so effective) hands with these three masks. Never fear, my picks are austere. #seewhatididthere #poet
First up! The creme de la creme, the bomb dot com, the solver of all problems…
The Problem Solver by May Lindstrom
Oh my, where do I even start? This mask fixes EVERYTHING.
A jet-black fusion of antioxidant-rich raw cacao, salts, exotic spices, and activated bamboo charcoal brightens, heals inflammation and irritation, fades hyperpigmentation, stimulates collagen production, and treats and prevents breakouts.
The Problem Solver is a real miracle worker, as you will see a definitive difference in your skin from the first go-round. The formula is intense, though! You might feel the warming ingredients going to work while it’s on, but it never upsets my skin. (Not gonna lie, the first time I tried it, I was afraid the slight tingling was a bad thing, but no no no. My skin isn’t even slightly red when I remove it.) One of the great skin beautifiers in this mask is cayenne pepper. Yep! Cayenne stimulates circulation, enabling fresh blood, oxygen, and vital nutrients to reach the cells.
However, despite being warming and intense, it completely restores balance to even the most delicate complexions. It is especially beneficial for those of you that struggle with severe acne, rosacea, psoriasis and all types of inflammatory disorders. It really does it all and it’s a must-have for all complexions.
This mask comes in a powdered form, so you just mix with water before applying. Also, it lasts forever (mine usually lasts a year or more) so the price tag is totally justified.
Laurel Honey Berry Enzyme Mask
First things first, I want to eat this mask. Seriously, I want to spread it on gluten-free toast and eat it every morning for breakfast. It is absolutely delectable, and you actually could eat it because everything Laurel produces is formulated with impeccably sourced, highly vibrant whole plants picked at their peak for unmatched transparency, purity, and results. Firmly rooted in the principles and practices of Slow Beauty, Laurel’s first and most critical relationship is with the land. Really, what this company is doing in terms of quality and farming practices is unmatched.
The Honey Berry Enzyme Mask is 100% Whole Plant Organic with 5 beneficial active ingredients and is perfect for all skin types. Just opening the jar is such a lovely experience – the scent of raw honey and berries (strawberry and blueberry) is so gorgeous, but it’s the way this mask nourishes my skin that wins me over. This mask hydrates like no other – I love that it acts as a gentle enzymatic exfoliator to slough off yesterday’s news, but when I wash it off, my skin is visibly plumper than before I applied it. I’m obsessed.
Also, I use this once in a while as a morning cleanser. I just lightly massage some of this wonder on my face and wash off for super glowing skin.
Just look at the deep emerald green. Could there be a more beautiful color? Gahhhhhh I love it so much.
The Mermaid Mask is a superfood treat for all skin types – a nutrient dense blend of superfood ingredients that will strengthen the skin cells, boost circulation, fight breakouts and moisturize. It’s a little powerhouse, but gentle enough that I feel comfortable letting my daughter join in on the fun.
The deep, emerald color comes from two superfood ingredients, organic chlorella and organic spirulina. The spirulina comes from a farm on the pristine coast of Hawaii, and is grown in a biosecure zone. Also, Leahlani uses the cleanest and most pure source of organic chlorella on the planet, which is grown in outdoor pools under the sunlight and contains cell walls that are “opened” or “cracked” using a specific process that preserves nutrients and increases absorption.
This is the mask I turn to when I’m less about specific treatment goals and more about glow glow glow. My daughter loves it too – she is always wanting to get in on the mermaid action.
Pro tip: be sure to add a little bit of water to emulsify the mixture before applying. The product itself is very dense and so super-packed with ingredients that I scoop a little bit into my fingers and drop a teensy bit of water into it which makes it easier to spread.

September 10, 2018 at 5:31 pmI am Wondering, you have at one point also recommended another Laurel mask… I think, the brightening mask. I am Curious, it is also powdered and yet when I blend it it isn’t smooth at all? Am I doing something wrong? It seems kind of clumpy . Thank you!

September 10, 2018 at 6:40 pmLove the Brighten mask for lightening sunspots! Yes, it shouldn’t be completely smooth because of the plant matter in the formulations.
The Honey Berry mask is not powdered.

September 10, 2018 at 7:23 pmFor thick honey masks that I need help spreading (like the leahlani mask, and I also have success using the Lilfox honey mask this way too!) I love to mist my face with a hydrating toner first, then spread the mask on my damp skin. It makes application so much easier, and I think it probably helps trap more hydration in my skin than using regular water.

September 11, 2018 at 3:13 amYou got me hooked on masks, and the Problem Solver is the one I use most. One of its most magical effects is that my pores are basically invisible after I use it. I also love the great combos that are possible by mixing May’s products together.
