Shiny Brunettes, Blonds and Redheads Unite!

As I sit here in Oklahoma, my father tells me there are only two types of bad hair. Thin and Curly. I ask him about my curls and he responds that mine is WAVY. Totally different, duh. He would also like to point out that he is referring to Three Stooges corkscrew curly and please refrain from the hate mail. Thank you for your time.

I am continuing with the lists due to your emails, but really because I’m hanging out with my parents and don’t want to focus on writing an entry. So let’s get to it.

Whoorl’s Greatest Hair Products:

1. Back to Basics Pomegranate Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner: This shampoo and conditioner rocks. Smells great, but not too much, makes my hair shiny and purdy. It’s the only shampoo that I buy in the jumbo bottles because it’s That. Good. Bye the way, ULTA has the big bottles on sale right now for $12.49 (about 1/2 off). Run, don’t walk.

2. Aveda Be Curly: I have wavy hair and let it air dry 80% of the time. This is very lightweight, keeps my hair from looking frizzy and smells nice.

3. Pureology Real Curl: Same as above. I just like to mix it up once in awhile. I wouldn’t want my hair to get bored and become a rebellious teenager.

4. Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum: When I dry my hair straight, this is a lifesaver. I swear it cuts my drying time in half and makes my hair incredibly shiny. And you only have to use a tiny bit- I think my bottle could last 5 years. After you’re finished drying, just rub the tiniest amount between your palms and coat the shaft. Wait…that didn’t translate well on the page. Hair shaft people! HAIR shaft.

5. Biosilk Hair Therapy: One word. Shiny. But don’t let it tip over in your bathroom cabinet and spill all over your cotton balls, razors and tampons. Trust me.

    My hair is blonde and pin straight. Although I have a lot of hair, it is not super thick. If I let it air dry it looks pretty sad, but when I dry it, not so bad.

    I use Paul Mitchell. I have been using Shampoo One and The Detangler for years, but recently have switched to the More Body Shampoo and Conditioner and have found it to increase the volume in my hair.

    If I am going somewhere special, I use Aveda sculpting serum. Just a dab on your hands run through the hair gives it shape when you dry it.

    I may try your pomegranite though, just because :).

    Hmmm, I need to try the pomegranate shampoo and the super shiny! Since I live in -15% humidity, I’m always on the lookout for hair products that keep my hair from turning into crispy twigs.

    So far redken all soft shampoo & conditioner and artek kiwi blow serum have saved my hair from utter doom.

    i am telling you listen to whoorl, her hair always looks good and she and d have one fine smelling bathroom thanks to her products. she could be a fine hair dresser, she is good at curly, wavy and does one hell of a blowout!

    I heart Be Curly – it’s the only thing that has tamed my wavy hair. I would buy stock in that product.

    A month ago I found out that I am allergic to the perservatives in almost all shampoos and hair products…for over a year I had been getting itchy red hives on my face wherever my hair touched me, and it turns out it was my shampoo and Bumble and Bumble grooming creme!
    And I have really wavy thick hair so it NEEDS products or it looks a hot mess.

    Now I am reduced to using only Neutrogena Moisture shampoo and conditioner (the only product I could find without the offending preservatives in it; even Aveda’s stuff has preservatives in it), and a Paul Mitchell leave-in conditioner. I had to give away like a hundred dollars worth of salon shampoos and straightening balms and finishing serums…*crying again*

    I am off to go read the ingredients list of your Back to Basics, with my fingers crossed.

    WHOORL! I need you to do something for me. I can’t find an ingredients list for the Back to Basics Pomegranate products anywhere on the interwebnets. I need you to go get your bottle of shampoo and conditioner, and tell me if you see any of these words in the ingredients (they are typically towards the end):

    Quaternium-15 or Polyquaternium
    Diazodinyl Urea

    Both are preservatives (which shampoo needs due to being 90% water and full of natural shit like flowers and fruits and berries, so that it has a shelf life) that release formaldehyde. And my skin no likey.

    Now this is one dangerous topic! Too many products, so little time…
    I also have the thick/wavy hair that I almost always air-dry; I love me some TIGI Curls Rock Shampoo and Conditioner, which seem to moisturize and help with the frizz factor. There are entirely too many other products that could be used to enhance the curl on damp hair, but my two current favorites are Jonathan Silky Dirt (ew on the name but yay! on the product itself) and Fresh Hair Cream. You just need a tiny bit of either, so I’ll probably be using the same tubes of each until 2010. Love them both, though!

    Oh – hair products. I could write a novel. Currently, I am using the Matrix color care line. Smells good. I will move on, as I always do. My favortie is Dove for darkened hair. I like the smell and even my hairdresser endorses it, which is rare because she’s always pushing Pureology on me.

    Products, on the other hand, I stick with the good ones. The Pureology straightening gel and the NanoGlaze is amazing. I mix the two together, dry the hair with a paddle brush and then coat the hair in Biosilk. I’ve used Biosilk for over 10 years. Ther is nothing better and nothing in the world smells better. I wish they made Biosilk detergent & dryer sheets – I love the smell that much. Then I straight iron it.

    HOWEVER – I do have wavy/semi-curly hair. When I let my natural side come out (i.e when I’m in a hurry), it’s Garnier Fructis Curly Spray Gel. Nothing makes my hair curl like this does and I don’t get goop all over my hands because it sprays on. It smells really good, too. Oh, and it’s cheap.

    Also – for deep conditioning, which I need often, I cannot say enough about Ojon. It smells like coffee, which I’m not crazy about, but it makes my hair feel like silk and like I don’t color it every 6 weeks. Amazing stuff. I also like the Kerastase Oleo deep conditioning mask.

    I will also say that the most over-hyped, over-priced hair products on the market are Jonathan products. I rushed out to buy them after being addicted to Blow Out on Bravo. They SUCKED. The “Create Curl” should be called “Create frizz”. Also, the shampoo does not sud – at all. I did not feel clean.

    Enough already!

    I have stick straight hair. A lot of it… but super fine. I need body during the warm months, and moisture during fall and winter.

    During summer: Kenra Volumizing Shampoo, alternated with Back to Basics Apple Ginseng Clarifying.

    During winter: Kiehls Fruit Oil Nourishing Shampoo. If I run out before the next delivery, Neutrogena Triple Moisture is a quick and easy (as well as inexpensive)substitute.

    I’m an Aveda whore. I should be their spokesmodel. I’ve been using Aveda products since I was 14 and I won’t use anything else. Their new Damage Remedy line is amazing- most notably the Intensive Restructuring Treatment. It does wonders for my thick and wavy hair.

    Ooh boy, do I love me some hair products. Seriously, I am a total hair product whore. I’ve tried them all.

    Lately, I’ve been switching between the Bumble & Bumble curl care line (I can’t remember what it’s actually called) and the Redken curly hair line for shampoo & conditioner. Everyonce in a while, I go back to my old-school hair product days and use Infusium leave-in conditioner, too. I’m lovin’ the Aveda Be Curly, with a little bit of Redken “Align” these days for hair products – although Align is supposed to be a straightener, it goes well with the Be Curly. I have always loved Biosilk, too. Ooh, and Redken’s “Fabricate” is great for days when I feel like drying my hair.

    I just almost went into all my past favorites, but…yeah, I’ve rambled enough.

    I SWEAR by Kerastase Lait Nutri Sculpt and Kerastase Oleo-Relax (Smoothing Conditioning Care). I have chin length hair so I pump one squirt of each into my palm, mix it together and run through my hair starting on the underside in the back and working my way up (putting very little near the roots, bangs, etc.) It smells lovely and gives you crazy shine (even when your water is hard and leaves nasty chemicals on your hair that you have to wash out with Neutrogena Clean Shampoo once a week.)
    The only thing about these babies is that they’re not cheap but it usually takes me 4 months or so to go through both of the bottles.

    I have also used Alterna’s Caviar products. I especially love the Caviar Rapid Repair Spray. My hair was so shiny you could see your reflection…I need to go buy some…NOW :)

    Hair talk is fun. My hair is so bad right now. It used to be stick straight but age and hormones are making it wavy, not a pretty wavy. I’m seeing all these cute short hair cuts and am so tempted.

    I have so many products, Bed Head, Paul Mitchell, Biolage, Aveda. I like to buy them, but being the low maintenance gal that I am, I’m never quite sure what to do with it all. I love shopping for that stuff though. So, I’m running out to Ulta. I’ve been looking for a new shampoo. Thanks for the tip.

    Delurking to say: LUH HUV the back to basics! I boogied right on over to Ulta and got me some big bottles (went out on a limb there…but if Whoorl says…who am I to question it) Used it for the first time today (along w/ some biosilk theraphy, again…thanks!) and I must say…MIGHTY FINE! Next stop…Sephora!
    I’ve been enjoying your blog for quite a while and can’t begin to tell you how much I’ve loved the last few posts (not to say I don’t adore pretty much EVERYTHING you post, ’cause I do…you have a great writing style and are hilarious!
