hair thursday makeover 55

Our first Hair Thursday of 2009! Say hello to Victoria.

Victoria’s hair:

Naturally ashy blonde with subtle highlights – likes a natural look
Normal condition
Medium thickness
Naturally wavy, but straightens easily
Prefers medium to long length
Likes Bumble & Bumble products

Victoria wants a look that can be worn both wavy and straight. When she’s styling it straight, she uses a blow dryer and a flat iron occasionally. Otherwise, it’s air-drying all the way to emphasize her natural waves.

Now, I’m a little torn on choosing the optimal length for Victoria. From her before photos, she looks great with both lengths. I think I shall pick both lengths as options and let you all choose- how about that?

Let’s take a look at the options.

Victoria mentioned she has never had bangs. Well, I think she has the perfect type of hair and face shape for beautiful sideswept bangs alá Jennifer Garner. These type of bangs are very easy to style and a breeze to grow out.

(Hint for sideswept bangs! While blowdrying, brush your bangs in the OPPOSITE direction that you want them to lay. When they are dry, smooth them in the direction you want.  It’s virtually fool proof, I promise.)

Option #1 would be a nice, subtle departure from Victoria’s relatively one-length hair without sacrificing length.

For a shorter look, Option #2 would also look lovely with Victoria’s features. She could easily wear this style straight or wavy and the length would really accent Victoria’s beautiful cheekbones.

(Hey! Product recommendation for 2nd day wavy/curly hair! Bumble and Bumble Reactivating Mist is a light spray that helps to revive curls and waves. I’m just starting to use it….I’ll get back to you with my final thoughts. Anyone else using this?)

Victoria is HOT, and I love all of Bumble’s products. I have curly hair and one of my all time favorite products is this http://www.bumbleandbumble.com/product/spp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CAT74&PRODUCT_ID=214. It’s not too….anything, just great!

So, the brushing my bangs to the opposite side while blowdrying doesn’t work for my unruly bangs. My stylist taught me to flip them back (like I want to feather them to the side) with the brush. I hold a round brush on top of my bangs, get it to grip them, then blowdry backwards at an angle towards the top of my ear. It is hard to describe, but it changed my sidebangs forever! In a good way ;)
P.S. Victoria has almost perfect hair–bangs are the one thing missing!

I love the Jennifer Gardner long hair with bangs look! Beautiful, and she could wear it straight or curly!

I think my vote was biased because I love Amy Poehler…But I would actually love that style on Victoria as well. :)

I totally agree with you on the blow-drying the bangs in the opposite direction. I figured that out a few weeks ago, but I don’t have any friends with bangs to tell that to xD

Thank you for posting the bang technique! I was skeptical, but I tried it and lo, they are so cute! I feel bad for blaming my stylist for not listening to my bang woes. Love your site – keep the great tips coming.

Helloooo Victoria! I voted for the J. Garner look because I agree with whoorl that you would ROCK the side-swept bangs and I love the longer length on you. Can’t wait to see the AFTER photos!

I voted for the Amy Poehler, but I’d like to see a more pronounced bang with it. Bangs are awesome, embrace the bang, ladies!

On the Bumble & Bumble, man I want to love it, but has anyone else found that B&B products make you break out? I was using a combination recommended by my stylist for my chin-length bob – Redken Gutz at the roots, and B&B styling creme on the middle-to ends. I had to stop the B&B because my neck/jaw area was breaking out so much. After I quit using it, the breakouts subsided quite a bit. Now I’m wondering if I should stop using my B&B hairspray, shampoo & conditioner (thickening line) too. :(

I use Frizz Ease dream curls for my second day curly hair.

    Hooray for less shampooing!

I just got some side swept bangs and for the life of me, I can’t figure out how to work them. I want them to look like whichever Olsen twin this is but mostly they end up sagging over and blending into the rest of my hair. Or looking like a bad comb over. So I guess I’ll have to try your tips.

Man, this hair thing is so much work.

Tera mentioned the bangs thing to me, and it works awesomely on my hair.

For Victoria, I’d put the Option 1 bangs on the Option 2 cut.

Yes! I agree with Missy, we need to have another option for combining the bangs of option 1 with the length of option 2. I think Victoria looks great with the shorter length in her before pictures.

I do like the Amy Poehler look. Very nice.

I use Aveda’s Be Curly Enhancer. It’s soft and doesn’t crinkle.
