The Top Knot

Last December, I cut a fair amount of hair off, and with the exception of 5 or 6 days since, I’ve been in mourning. It hasn’t mattered how “fresh” people told me it looks or that “I needed the change,” the truth is, I LIKE MY HAIR LONG. I am lame, and the antithesis of follicular risk-tasking. I’m okay with it.

Although the cut itself was technically lovely, it ended up being that horrible in-between length where it would flip up from resting on my shoulder, and it was too short to make my waves look decent on a regular basis (my waves look better as my hair gets longer). Most importantly, I lost the ability to put it up in my beloved top knot easily. Oh, dear me.

However, I’m here to tell you that after months of growing, my hair is entering its happy territory. Just in time for the warmest part of summer too. I am in top knot heaven.

Antique mirror + Instagram filter = Texture up the ying-yang.

Girls’ Day Out. Holla!

My two preferred methods of creating a top knot are 1) using Goody Spin Pins, or 2) just wrapping my hair around itself in a bun and using an elastic to wrap around the base. (Does that make sense? Maybe a tutorial is in order?) However, I am loving this new (to me) bun that I saw at The Beauty Department.

If you love the top knot as much as I do, check out the step-by-step instructions here.

Being a generally short-haired girl, I’m just excited that, yesterday, for the first time in years, I was able to run with my hair in a ponytail using ONLY a ponytail holder. No headbands, no barrettes, nothing. Just an elastic. Okay, and a little hairspray. But that’s all!

I cut off 6 inches in May and am still mourning. SIX inches. I had been growing it out for 2 years and it was just too much hair. I should have taken off 2 inches instead of 6; I’m in mourning too. :( I like my hair, it looks cute, but I just like it MORE when it’s longer. My husband said he misses it too. Sadface. GROW HAIR, GROW.

I cut off about 10 inches last summer and am still trying to find an ideal legnth. I have those spin pins and can’t get them to work. How are you supposed to use them?

THAT BLUE DRESS, omg, it is beautiful. As are you, and your lovely baby. That is all! Also, am I the only person who didn’t know what a spin pin was?

Love it! My mom raised us with a top bun! One of my fondest most silly things I always think of when I remember my child hood is how long and wavy and thick my mom’s hair was. She would wear it down in the mornings while she got us ready to school, and then in an instant it was wrapped back and skillfully secured with pins. I was always in awe at how elegant she looked so quickly. I have YET to master the bun skill!!! You look absolutely lovely :-)

Thanks for the link to the tutorial, I love a good top knot!

I also had another request. I know from your earlier posts that you used to suffer from rosacea but your skin always looks terrific. Do you have any information or secrets to share with others who also suffer from rosacea? I’ve been really curious lately how you keep your skin looking so fabulous!

Didn’t you wear the fun bun in Lala’s wedding?

I’m the same way. Something about being able to pull all my hair off up and away from my face and neck (except my small mess of bangs) is perfect. I know it’s too long and I need a cut when it starts getting too heavy and gives me headaches.

Cool tutorial! I’ve never thought to do a bun that way. I’m currently rocking almost waist length hair (w/ newly PINK and black ends!), and I totally feel you on wanting to get all that hair off of my neck. I’ll be trying a top knot for sure!

Last year I thought about getting a “lob” for about 5 minutes. I really loved Olivia Palermo’s hair but I have hair like yours; long, dark, thick and wavy and I just had a feeling I’d regret it. I see lots of people with naturally straight, thinner hair that look great with it that length but for us with wavier hair, longer is just plain easier. I also totally agree, my curls/waves look much better longer. When they are shorter they just get pouffy and frizzy and don’t look as good or lay right no matter what I do. Yay that you’re hair has grown out and you are happy. Sometimes if it ain’t broke we just shouldn’t fix it. You look awesome no matter what.

I cut my hair really short a year and a half ago. I loved it for awhile. However, when I found out we were having another baby, I desperately wanted my long hair back. I struggled to “fix” my hair on a regular basis as it was and I knew that adding a baby to the mix meant that I needed to be able to just pull it back, bun it up and be done with it. This baby is coming out in a few weeks, and my hair STILL doesn’t reach my shoulders. Some women can grow hair like whoa when they are pregnant, I have learned that I am NOT one of those women. What am I going to do with this hair in my face in labor?

I do the same topknot as you mention in 2) – twist around and secure an elastic at the base. I always thought more hair blogs should mention it as it is so easy. I’ve actually stopped doing it that way though – I’m giving up elastic bands. After months of doing a bun like that I had the worst split ends, so after I chopped off all that weak hair I decided to go hairband free for awhile. Now I’m using lots of hair sticks and bobby pins.

I could NOT figure out how to do this “top knot” to save my life. Hahaha! I got to step 6 and failed by step 7. I would love a video tutorial.
