The Magical Hair Color Tour

Man, I love Hair Thursdays, but can we jump back to the hair color poll? From the looks of my highly scientific survey, approximately two-thirds of you color your hair. That seems like a realistic number to me.

(It’s much more realistic than 78%, mind you.)

(Yes, there is a huge difference between 62% and 78%.)

(You know what? Leave me alone.)

However, after reading your comments, it has come to my attention that I may have misled you into thinking my hair has experienced nothing but pure chaste in the past 32 years. This could not be more untrue, as you will soon bear witness. After spending a good portion of my afternoon perusing through my old yellow box of photos, I give you this:

Whoorl’s Magical Hair Color Tour

It all started here, with a few subtle caramel highlights. Natural looking, yes?

hair1.jpg

I’m bored. Let’s take it up a notch and add a little more here and there.

hair7.jpg
Still brown, though. Kind of.

Time to touch up those roots! Oh, I have a great idea! While touching up, let’s just have my stylist run even MORE highlights through what’s left of my virgin hair. Brilliant!

hair8.jpg
Officially NOT a brunette.

hair9.jpg
We give thanks for this cornucopia of color. Just not on Whoorl’s head.

Okay, the blond has to stop. Let’s take it to a nice shade of reddish brownish something. I know! Dark butternut squash meets a kumquat! Tantalizing!

hair4.jpg
This color could have been the reason for the massive beer consumption.

Let’s go back to brunette. Except not just any brunette, an reddish brunette! Oh hell, throw some auburn in while you’re at it!

hair5.jpg
Do you hear something? Why, I think it’s the sound of my hair weeping! It’s being beaten into submission by my crimson lipstick!

The best color yet!

hair6.jpg
Kidding. That’s a wig.

You know, I’m sick of all this crap. I’m a serious person, with serious needs and serious thoughts. Seriously. Let’s take it all the way to the end of the spectrum.

hair2.jpg
Look, it’s shiny! Yet goth! Shoth!

As you can see from this riveting photo essay, I have been quite a hair color slut. (Just like 62% of you!) Let’s hug it out.

It is funny how you can almost date all of this from what… the mid 1990s to a few years ago. I don’t even know you, but I think that I know fashion and hair enough to create a little mock timeline.

Most all of my friends (late 20s/early 30s) have gone back to their natural color with the realization that we will soon have to color like mad to keep up with the grey if we choose to go that route. Might as well enjoy the low maintenance while it lasts.

You should to a post with women who are going grey. It is always cool to see what they do or don’t do with their hair. Some women rock the silver.

As everyone else has already said, you do look great with almost all those colors (not so sure about the shoth) but you truly look best now with your natural color.

I’ve over colored my hair for years and now that it is going gray and I have to color it I would give anything to just go back to my natural medium brown. I now have to leave a little highlighting in to help blend those pesky gray hairs, otherwise I’d be coloring it all the time.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Puh — only you could pull off every hair color in the rainbow! I should find all my various colors and post them. It’s just a mess.

I keep considering doing a hair retrospective, but I just don’t have the balls to do it. Probably because along with the ever-changing hair color, I’ve got some pretty naff style changes to go along with them. At least yours are all fairly tame!

Hmm. I know I was just a Hair Thursday participant and I was all like “my hair is virginal! I’m natural all the way!”

But I also was a victim of the gorgeous/natural chocolate highlights that eventually turned blonde. Which made me look like a Golden Retriever. But were much better than the Sun-In incident of 1987.

You? You look hawt, even as a blonde.

I’m starting to hate you, is what I’m trying to say.

    :-)

I love any and all photo retrospectives. This one? Most excellent.

I dabbled in some highlighting recently… I love it for about two weeks, then my hair grows. Dark brown hair + one half head of highlights + fast growing hair = annoying upkeep.

I’m going to dye the locks back to dark brown in a couple weeks. I just like how my hair feels without highlight damage in it. Call me picky ;)

Thanks for the guided tour. I love how rich and dark your colour of today is…don’t change!
PS: I am getting my hair cut and coloured on Tuesday so I’m too late for a Hair Thursday poll, but do you think I should hack off a bunch of length and go for a Posh Spice-meets-Jenny McCarthy-Inverted Bob With Nice Sculpted Layers? Or just ask my stylist to take an inch off the ends? I NEED SOME EMERGENCY WHOOLENCY HAIRVICE! Email me, if you have a second.

so what you’re telling us is, your hair is born-again virgin. sweet, and you didn’t even have to get that creepy hymen-reattachment surgery! If you hadn’t posted the photos retrospective, I never would have known.

I too can cop to having most of those colors (or combinations thereof)including sloth with deep red lowlights. Have yet to find a STYLE however that is fashionable and/or not “long/er”. Just not a short-hair gal i guess. What I’m saying is Whoorl, sign me up for the whoorl hair boot camp. I’m sending pictures of my current hair as it looks nothing like the shot in the Hair gallery.

I think I might be the only person in the world who has NEVER colored her hair. I’ll be 30 in a month and I still have the same color hair I did when I was 2 years old (ridiculously blond). Maybe it’s time . . . has anyone else NEVER colored their hair? I mean, never a highlight, never a lowlight, never any kind of light . . .

I answered yes, but I wanted to explain my response. I don’t color my hair a different color than its natural hue, I color to correct the abundance of premature greys I have floating around in there. (Hello, I’m only 30!)

I actually had hair that wig colour for awhile. It made my mother cry, and my grandmother, a rather conservative Mennonite old lady, said that she didn’t know her own grandchild. Ah, the memories.

Is it wrong to think the red wig is sort of hot?
