The Annual January Death March

I’m sick. Sinus explosions, 1,000-pound head, the whole deal. Wito has mild croup, but seems to be on the mend, given his penchant for hyperactive, barking behavior. Fun for me.

Wasn’t I sick this time last year? Why yes, I WAS. Hey, don’t forget 2006!

However, this year involves no surgical masks. Caring for a toddler sure puts a stop to the GOCD behavior quickly.

*said as she licks her finger and wipes a booger off Wito’s face*

Any good croup remedies?

Son has had croup six times in his 2 years. It helps to do all the stuff your other readers have suggested. You can also try elevating the “head” side of his bed just a bit. Apparently that helps with some of the throat swelling associated with croup.

The steroid shot from the pediatrician also works like a charm.

    Hope everyone’s feeling better soon!

my father-in-law has always said to put the vicks on your feet too! his mom did that when he was little…maybe it works, maybe not, but i always do it, because it can’t hurt, right? – my little guy had the croup when he was younger and the hot shower thing helps, as well as cool night air (or maybe the freezer section of your grocery, if it’s too warm outside…)

Take Wito to an ice rink. The cool air is THE BEST for croup. I thought the opposite before I learned this trick. I thought moist steamy bathrooms helped, but they don’t. Cold air really helps.
My little dude was a barking seal once too, it’s hard to listen to. Not in a “oh man your driving me nuts” kinda way, but rather in a “oh man I feel so bad for you, it sounds so painful” kinda way. Sending you guys lots of feel better vibes!

My brother and I had the croup constantly when I was a kid and my Mom did the steamy shower then outside (we live in Canada and I always got it in the winter which meant it was usually -35 outside) as well as the vicks vapour rub on the feet, back and chest, I seem to remember it making me sleepy, and she also used to make us a ‘soothing drink’. 2 slices of lemon with a tablespoon of fresh honey on it and then hot water poured over I still drink it when I’m sick and it makes me feel all warm and comfortable and safe. Also I remember it helping to ‘loosen up’ my throat.
Recently I have an ex-boyfriend who swears by oil of oregano (the spice) which comes in a small vial with dropper, I dropped the boyfriend by anytime I feel ‘throaty’ I give myself a dropper full, it tastes terrible but it does help you to, ahem, clear your throat.
Good luck, I’m sure Wito will be fine.
