Just wanted to speak up about the article on tipping, as a full-time barista working at a counter-service cafe. I rely on tips from customers in order to make *almost* a living wage. My coworkers and I feel that if our customers value our service and want us to continue providing it, they should agree that we should be paid enough to live comfortably in our city. Given that our hourly wage is substantially lower than that living wage amount, at this point, tips are simply a necessity. I always hope that our customers understand this situation, and that they factor a reasonable tip into their budget when they come to our cafe.
Also, even though we’re not providing table service, I can assure you that we work very hard and earn the tips we do make!
