Join the Real Seal Appeal!

For my friends whose kiddos attend California public schools (although I’m sure plenty more can empathize with what the slumping economy is doing to our public education), I just heard about a fun way to help raise money for our elementary schools. To put it mildly, things aren’t looking so great in regards to public education in California. Just last month, Wito’s school district (which is an outstanding district encompassing many California Distinguished Schools) announced that they had to make 40 million dollars in budget cuts just this year. As a mother who spends many hours volunteering at his school, I can easily imagine how things could end up for our children down the road. It’s crazy.

So when I see fun and easy ways to help raise money four our schools, I’m all in. From October 1, 2011-December 31, 2011, The California Milk Advisory Board, in conjunction with Scholastic, will be challenging Southern California elementary classrooms, schools and students to collect Real California milk and cheese seals for a chance to win up to $2 million in cash, books and other prizes. For Californians, it’s a win-win situation. Since California leads the U.S. in the production of total milk, butter, ice cream, yogurt and nonfat dry milk, buying products with the Real California Milk seal supports both the 1,620 California dairy families AND California schools.

Here’s how it works. Families can participate by collecting Real California Milk seals from milk and dairy products and turning them in to their teachers. Each seal acts as a sweepstakes entry – the more seals collected and turned in, the more chances your child’s classroom (and school) has to win! All of the details of this great program can be found here.
