hair thursday makeover 19

Ramón Alejandro Django has traumatized my fingers and typing hurts mucho. No small talk, chiquitas.

Britt:

Britt’s hair:

Usually has light brown hair with blond highlights, but went all blond this summer and hates it.
Very oily at the roots and dry at the ends
Medium-thick, with a bit of frizz
Just needs enough length to cover her “protruding ears”. Open for suggestions.
Spends about 30-40 minutes styling with a curling iron, blow dryer, and flat iron
Uses frizz serum, hairspray, root pump, leave-in conditioner, shampoo, conditioner

I love participants like Britt because I know no matter what hairstyle I recommend, she will be able to handle it. She’s obviously proficient with styling tools and such, so I don’t feel like I need to walk her through every single step. (Plus, she has very pretty hair!)

However:

Britt, honey? What is that nest-like situation back there? Was it a result of back-combing/teasing for volume? Could you refrain from that from here on out? Mucho gracias.

(I’m not picking solely on you, Britt. I’m picking on EVERY WOMAN who teases their hair and neglects to look at the back before leaving the house. You know you are out there. By all means, tease away, just be sure to smooth it out!)

Let’s darken Britt’s hair a little bit for the winter- her previous light brown with blond highlights sounds perfect to me. Since I know she will rock whatever style she decides on, I’m going to let the readers do the talking (voting).

Long or short, whoorlistas?

Anyone else think Britt looks like Kellie Pickler? (Clearly, another fan of the hair tease.)

Miss Dawn:

dawn_back.jpg

Dawn’s hair:

Natural reddish brown color
Normal condition
Wavy and thick
Needs hair to be long enough to pull back (babyproof)
Doesn’t have any time to style, pulls it back into a ponytail
Has a difficult time with bangs due to a stubborn cowlick

Oh, this is a hard one. Not due to Dawn’s hair condition, but her lifestyle. I like to keep things realistic on Hair Thursdays, and here’s the deal. Dawn wants long hair. She can’t have bangs due to cowlick. She has a baby, which means she inevitably is going to pull it back.

What to do, what to do.

I looked and looked and looked for a photo last night, but everything was too styled, too many layers, just too much for Dawn.

I know what I want her to do. I want her to trim an inch off the bottom, cut a chin-length layer in the front for some definition, start parting her hair on one side (make the cowlick WORK for it, Dawn), and I want her to cut very subtle, very fine layers all over to get rid of the triangle effect she has going on.

Now, when Dawn sent me an email, she remarked that her hair looked like The Rachel every time she cut layers. These are not the type of layers I’m talking about- I want VERY subtle layers, the kind that you can barely see, but will change the overall shape of the hair.

Then, I saw the photo in a magazine last night:

dawn_option.jpg

This is similar to what I’m aiming for – fine layers all over (see the shorter pieces blowing in the model-esque wind?), so a little of the overall bulk is reduced.

I think this cut would look beautiful and it doesn’t require any extra effort. In fact, it should be one of those styles that will have people wondering if you did something different with your hair, but still similar to your previous length.

Since I’m letting Dawn off practically scot-free, I have one more request. How amazing would her hair look in this color? (FYI -notice the subtle layers in this haircut as well. If Dawn straightened her new style, it would look very similar to this.)

Dawn would get so much out of that Julianne Moore color. My hair is naturally shade similar to Dawn’s, and to get a little “oomph,” the colorist recommended a demi-color that hid all the stray grays and gave it a huge boost without deviating a huge amount from my natural color. The demi-color faded out naturally, too – that way, she can test the waters in terms of upkeep.

Britt’s hair would look lovely with style #2. And the excess weight she’d lose by going short would probably reduce the need for nesting, no?

I just have to say that you’re right, Britt can do whatever she wants. She’s just plain adorable. I happen to love the blonde on her, but of course it will look fantastic darker, too. I also like it long, but since she’s up for a change, a short cut will look great, too. No fair!!

Yes, yes and YES!! Fabulous suggestions ~ I was thinking the same things about the cut. ;)

Go for it, Dawn! It’ll turn you into an even hotter mama!

I heart Britt (especially since she picked me up from the airport last week. I love the internet) and I heart Whoorl. So this week’s Hair Thursday was the best one ever.

Can’t wait to see what the ladies do!

I think that Britt would look adorable with shorter hair! Now, I was picturing it blonde that short! But, I think that the shorter haircut would look really cute with a pretty brown color as well, and it would show off her blue eyes! As for Miss Dawn…I think that the chin length layers and reducing the overall bulk will look great especially if she adds some color like Julianne Moore’s! I love Hair Thursdays!!!!

I think if Britt goes short, her current blond shade would be really pretty. If she decides to stay long, then she could go a little darker.

Thanks for pointing that out, Lisa!

Whoorl you have such a wonderful eye – really you should think about getting paid to do this!

I agree about Britt – whatever she decides to do she will probably end up looking fabulous. I like the versatility that a longer cut would give her, but still think short would look really cute on her.

Dawn- I hear you on the babyproofing of hair! I totally agree with Whoorl’s layering suggestions and think the added color would really make your features pop. Good luck!

That girl is HAWT no matter what– but I think she could totally rock the redness.

Wow, my hair is Dawn’s hair’s soulmate .. reddish brown, wavy and thick, but I have TWO cowlicks. Fortunately, they aren’t too noticeable …. (by the way, I have a lot of layers, and my hair does still fit in a ponytail. Not great, but mine’s much shorter. Don’t be afraid of layers!)

I’m sure whatever the two of you decide will be wonderful!

Ooo! Dawn has my hair! Though honestly, hers looks slightly more cooperative, since I’m guessing that in her pictures there were no styling products involved, and my hair is too frizzy to exist in that natural of a state. (heh).

In any case, I cannot possibly speak highly enough of Ouidad haircuts if you’re anywhere near a salon of theirs. I went to the one in Santa Monica a month ago and I’m amazingly still in LOVE with my hair. They call it a “carve and slice” technique (you can look it up on their website). She managed to take out ALL the dreaded triangle-ness of my hair that I’d been living with for years. It’s basically lots of tiny separate layers. So my hair doesn’t LOOK layered at all (still ponytail friendly!), but there’s so much less of it!

But I’m telling you, a good haircut with lots of LITTLE layers, and some leave-in conditioner when it’s wet, then air dry. You have gorgeous hair in the making, I can TELL. :)

i am delurking on this post…because holy moly your honesty is HILARIOUS! I laughed out loud at the diagram pointing out the “teasing”. And then again at the suggestion of subtle layers to “get rid of the triangle effect”. You’re so funny.

She’s just callin’ it as she sees it – my mop IS a triangle right now :)

The “Pickler” for Britt, and the “Julianne” for Dawn.

Love you whoorl, really I do, but if you show/pick one more bob I’m going to scream!

Maybe you would be better suited spending your Thursdays here. http://tinyurl.com/djnw5

Love you Kay, really I do!
