A Fresh Cut for Spring

shoulder length hair with bangs

Awwww yeahhh, heavy hair be gone. Although not pixified, I do feel like a new lady.

You see, to make a long (hair) story short, about a year and a half ago, I decided to grow my hair out like this lovely woman. The idea was born during the Pantene commercial shoot, when it was brought to my attention by the director that my hair wasn’t optimal for shooting because it had layers in it. Talk about a crying in your beer kind of moment. I mean, how should you respond to that? Um, thank you for that information, sir? I apologize for not being a professional hair model, sir?

In a perfect world, hair would be all one length for the hair waterfall and swishy scenes, but hey, we made it happen, with layers and all. (The CHALLENGES that must be surmounted, people.)

At that point, my hair had its fair share of layers and sideswept bangs, but I decided to go all in and pull a Crystal Gayle. No layers, no bangs, nada. You all, I thought this was a grand idea. What could go wrong? Long, shiny, healthy hair! It would be amazing, folks! I’d be living in a Pantene commercial every single day! I’m swishing…don’t you see me swishing over here? Layers are so out, don’t you know?

So I grew, and trimmed, and grew, and trimmed until all of my hair was virtually one length. And you know what? It certainly wasn’t amazing. It was a curtain – a heavy curtain, at that – just weighing me down, figuratively and literally. And the no bangs thing? Ugh. Hated not having my “veil” on a daily basis. Bangs + Sarah = TLF

Moral of the story? One-length hair isn’t always the bee’s knees. The hair itself might be “pretty,” but it’s a hard look to pull off. Hair needs to be able to move and be freeeeeee, I say!

I think I’m back on track.

My head feels 5 pounds lighter, for reals.

Yep, I was a sister wife.

Happiness. Oh, and you might be wondering…has the pixie been laid to rest? Never say never, but it’s certainly on the back burner for the time being. I’m thinking this summer is going to be full of beachy waves, head scarves, and bangs. God bless bangs.

You had beautiful hair before, but this cut is stunning on you. It really makes your hair look full!

Whenever I’ve let my hair grown long and one length, my mother says my hair is wearing me instead of me wearing the hair.

thank you for this! you look beautiful! I’ve been growing out my bangs (driving me nuts!), and my hair in general (for that same long, one-length effect) and I’ve been going back and forth about what to do later this week at my hair cut appt! back to bangs!! :)

I have bangs (because I think I have a big forehead), so I’m looking forward to seeing how you change up your style with bangs. I feel like I have two chices, flat iron…or loose waves. I’m curious about this headscarf style…

I just cut bangs about a month ago. It took some getting used to but I love them. They make me not look bald when my hair is in a ponytail. Your new hair looks awesome, much better than a pixie.

I love my bangs. My hair is not think, but it very long with a long layer in the back. As much as love it, I think it is too long for my face. Time for a cut and some layers.

I’m currently rocking too-choppy layers (I will not use the “m word”) thanks to trying a new salon. That made me curse the concept of layers and I’m just dying to grow out my hair for a bob. One length. I may reconsider.

Haha, Kate, oh do I feel your pain! Not sure if you saw this lovely mullet of my own from a few years back!

The key is finding a happy medium with layers – short enough to give movement, but still long enough that you are NOT rocking a 70s mullet hybrid!

No wonder you wanted something drastic — all one length hair that long is heavy and hot and no fun. I have similar hair and I get most exasperated by it when it doesn’t have some style in the cut. I am going back to bangs at my next appointment. Hope you enjoy your new do for summer!

How do I know if I am sister wifeish???? Freaking out a bit, hair is long with long layers, very very thick-wavy, red/blonde, now I am scared of how I look. I am a poor judge of what looks good. For example, I love your before hair. Is that wrong??? Though your new cut does look awesome awesome awesome- anxious to see what you do with those bangs in the summer.
