Hooray for Invisalign!

Operation Straight Teeth Alert! I just finished my last Invisalign tray (20 of 20), and am meeting with my orthodontist next week to discuss refinements. (Refinements are exactly what they sound like – additional trays to help refine any remaining adjustments that need to be made.)

However, I wanted to give you a quick looksie.

Can I just tell you how long it took me to find a relatively close-up photo of my teeth from before? It was hilarious – I spent an entire evening combing though my iPhoto archives, and all I found was this random iPhone selfie from years ago. I guess this girl doesn’t like to bust a toothy grin on many occasions. (Not for long!)

I am really happy so far, and the process has been a breeze. The 10 months flew by, and  it has been sooooo much easier than my first go-around with traditional metal brackets.

If you have always wanted straighter teeth, but aren’t interested in wearing traditional metal brackets (because you don’t want to be magically transported to junior high again), check out the smile assessment to see if you are a candidate. You can also visit Invisalign’s doctor locator to find a practitioner near you.

Been Told You’re Not An Invisalign Braces Candidate? Second Opinion Time!

I am a member of the Invisalign Advisory Board, and am receiving complimentary treatment. All opinions are fully my own.

Okay, I just need to talk to you guys about something for a second. You know I’ve been wearing Invisalign for 7 months now, I can’t express just how much I love it. For reals and seriously and all that good stuff.

Can you tell that I’m wearing my aligners? Big smiles! (And my front teeth don’t look like they are playing leap frog anymore. Awww yeahhhhh.)

The whole experience has been light years better than wearing traditional metal brackets, and I can’t believe I’m already halfway through the process.

I was talking to my mom a few weeks ago and she mentioned how she really would like to straighten her teeth (her situation is very similar to mine in that we both have crowding and our front teeth cross over each other), but she mentioned that her orthodontist told her she wasn’t a candidate. And you know what? I hear this ALL THE TIME from people when I mention that I’m wearing Invisalign. So why would an orthodontist tell my mother that her fairly straightforward case wasn’t doable?

Well, unfortunately, even though Invisalign has been extremely successful over the past decade, some practitioners just aren’t up-to-date on what they can achieve by using Invisalign. And let me tell you – I visited the Invisalign headquarters a few months back and saw firsthand what their virtually invisible braces can do. No offense to some of the patients whose before/after photos I witnessed, but those teeth were, um how do I say it…JACKED UP. Invisalign is not just for minor cases. Don’t take my word for it – have a look.

My point is? If you’ve been told that you aren’t a candidate, GET THEE  A SECOND OPINION. Visit Invisalign’s doctor locator. Or check out the smile assessment. Or DON’T and get those really awesomely comfortable metal brackets put on your teeth. Bygones. (I will never be able to use that word without thinking of Ally McBeal.)

Invisalign On-The-Go Must Haves

Since I’ve been wearing Invisalign aligners for about 4 months now, I deem myself an expert of sorts. (Cocky!) I talked about my initial experience here, but I have some new thoughts to share with you all. First off, I love these dang aligners. I can’t believe the movement in my teeth already! My front teeth used to cross over one another, and they are almost flat and even in a few months time. And to think I almost didn’t do this….I liken it to seeing tangible results after starting a new workout program – when you see those new muscles and do a double take? That’s how I feel about my teeth! I find myself smiling in the mirror when I pop them out and getting really excited.

Secondly, I’m taking much better care of my teeth overall. The thing about eating and then putting the aligners back in – I personally feel the need to brush and floss after every meal because I don’t want anything left in between my teeth. So, yep, that means flossing 3 times a day. Hello, oral health to the max.

Thirdly, and most important for those of you starting out with Invisalign, you really should carry a SOS kit with you in your bag. Chances are you aren’t eating every single meal at home, right? And what about meetings or cocktail parties where snacks and/or appetizers are everywhere you look? (I will say, for me, I don’t partake in snacks and appetizers nearly as much as I did before. Sometimes, not wanting to take out my aligners and brush trumps eating a snack.) You need a SOS bag, pronto. Here’s a look at mine.

1. A cute little bag – You know those little pencil case-sized cosmetic bags that you never really use on a daily basis? One of those will be perfect for your Invisalign stuff.

2. Your aligner case – The above red case is the one I received when I started treatment. It’s important to put your clear aligners in that case for safekeeping. In fact, just this week, a friend of mine took his aligners out at lunch, put them in a napkin, and promptly forgot about them and left. Ooops! Don’t be like my friend – put your aligners in the proper case so you don’t misplace them.

3. Toothbrush – I use my toothbrush two ways – to brush my teeth after eating, duh, and also to brush my aligners before putting them back into my mouth. While I use toothpaste for my mouth, I actually use a mild soap to wash the aligners. (My favorite is Method Free & Clear Hand Wash.)

4. Toothpaste – Teeth brushing and all that good stuff.

5. Floss – Oh man, don’t forget your floss. (I even have the real deal and a flosser!) With the movement in your teeth, you might develop some little crevices that would just love to house a hunk of spinach for the remainder of the day. Be sure you have your floss with you at all times.

6. Rubberbands – I don’t know about your personal treatment, but I have the lovely job of wearing a rubberband on one side of my mouth to help correct my bite. I have to admit, the rubberbands take me right back to high school, and aren’t really my favorite. (I feel like I should be color-coordinating with my outfit. Did you ever do that? HOT PINK FTW) However, I know they will help me to get the best smile possible. Be sure to carry a pack with you just in case you need to replace one or experience the dreaded snap when you yawn or something. (Hasn’t happened to me yet, thank goodness.)

So those are my trusty Invisalign on-the-go companions. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot them my way! Interested in learning if Invisalign would work for you? Click here.

Oscars Celebrity Smile Awards (+ Giveaway!)

I am a member of the Invisalign Advisory Board, and am receiving complimentary treatment. All opinions are fully my own.

I can’t believe the Oscars are this Sunday – I love watching award shows, but for some reason I’ve missed both the Golden Globes and SAG awards this year. #sadtrombone Well, not this time. I’ve got the DVR set just in case.

Speaking of award shows and celebs, Invisalign conducted a fun survey on what Oscar nominees and winners had the best smile. Here are the results. Do you agree?

I haven’t written about my Invisalign progress in quite some time – I’m currently finishing up some bite refinements, but I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I am thrilled with the way my teeth look! I feel, especially after a recent 4-month stint with traditional metal brackets on my back teeth (more on that later…), like I’m more than qualified to sing the praises of Invisalign. For me, there’s just no comparison in regards to ease of use and general comfort.

But! That’s not what I’m here today to talk about…I’m here to offer you a chance to win a free Invisalign treatment for yourself. If you’ve been thinking of looking into Invisalign, this is the time to do it. (You can find a doctor near you here.) New year, new teeth, new you. #fistbump
