This is Beth with blonde hair.

Beth has sent a few emails inquiring if she should be a blonde or brunette.

From Beth’s most recent email:

Sending up another smoke signal. I am thinking of asking my husband to make my Christmas gift a trip to the salon to return to my inner blonde but I’m unsure. I have had a lot of feedback from friends, my husband and coworkers who like my hair dark, but my parents and my daughters like my hair blonde. I think I do, too, but am not sure. I need an impartial opinion.

I’m 36 years old and a working mom of two girls and wife to my brunette-loving husband. I want to look glamorous but without spending a ton of money or time. I need more volume but don’t want to look matronly. I felt pretty and vibrant with blonde hair. Not sure if brunette works on me.

Let’s take a look at both sides.

On one hand, Beth admits to liking her hair better when blonde. She feels pretty and vibrant, and we all know that is important.

On the other hand, she doesn’t want to spend a lot of money or time on her hair, and keeping up with blonde maintenance isn’t a cake walk. It also sounds like the majority of friends, family and coworkers prefer Beth as a brunette.

For me, I do have a preference. I much prefer Beth as a brunette. Her complexion looks perfectly peaches-and-cream, her blue eyes pop, and she exudes such a beautiful and sophisticated look in the brunette photo.

How I wish I felt the other way, so I could tell Beth what I think she wants to hear, but brunette is my preference. FINAL ANSWER.

(Although, Beth. How do you feel about the current blonded brunette trend? That could be the perfect compromise for you! Being a brunette doesn’t mean you need to have super dark hair. Think Audrina Patridge’s color for inspiration.)

Don’t just listen to me, though! Let’s see what the readers have to say.

I voted brunette. I think Beth looks much younger with brown hair. The blonde reminds me too much of the color my mother and many other women in their 60’s have when they, as she puts it, “go gracefully blonde” to cover the gray.

I vote brunette, too. Her eyes look fantastic with brown hair. :) But you know, the blonde/brunette trend might work for her too…

Brunette – and honestly, I think the color in the picture that she has is perfect for her! I don’t like the weird Audrina color. It’s too…beige? I can’t explain. I like the gorgeous color that Beth has now – I kind of think I want to steal it!

I like all the options! I think the blonde is great, brunette is great, and even the option suggested. I say she should pick whatever she feels like right now and change later, since they all look great! (I probably didn’t help, haha!)

I also think a caramel-y color would look fab. The platinum blonde looks like she’s trying too hard.

I say brunette, with lighter highlights.

And can I just say that in that first picture, she is a DEAD RINGER for Jamie Luner? WOW!

Wow…I never expected this feedback. Thank you for the kind comments (although I have to say, thank goodness for bright photography lights and good cameras!) I will be sending an update photo soon–I had to go straight back to work after my appointment yesterday, and I have not styled my hair today, so no photo yet. I went with…brunette, in a deeper chocolate shade for winter. However, after talking to my stylist about the HT suggestions, the plan is that in early March she’s going to do heavy foils and bring it to a more “honey/caramel” shade. Btw, my natural color used to be light/medium blonde with a lot of gold undertones, but now is an ashy light brown. Not very flattering. Thanks again for the very kind comments!

Tera, I’m open for suggestions still, since I’m planning on going for a more honey/caramel color in the spring.
