Meet Sadie.

sadie_before

Sadie’s hair:

Reddish-blonde hair that naturally lightens/darkens with the seasons
Normal condition, thick and wavy
Would love to try a short or medium-length cut with bangs
Spends little-to-no time on hair

From Sadie’s email:

I am 19 years old and in desperate need of hair help.  I want something that is young, stylish and maybe a little funky.  I am sick of having the same long boring haircut. I have almost always had long hair, but I really REALLY would like to try out a short or even medium cut with bangs. The only problem is that whenever I cut my hair shorter than a couple inches bellow my shoulders, it poufs out and becomes straight-ish on top and curly frizzy under. It is a nightmare.

Sadie (love your name, btw), I think you could pull off a shorter look, depending on how much styling you want to endure on a daily basis. Here are two options.

For option #1, Charlize Theron‘s long bob has delicate curls and just the right amount of airy volume. I think this is the shortest Sadie would want to go, considering her hair type and heart-shaped face. The look is definitely sexy and youthful, and would totally accent Sadie’s natural waves. I would highly recommend Sadie using a curl cream to help define her waves and keep her hair from looking like a “poufy nightmare.” Pureology Real Curl would be a fantastic, but another less expensive option is La Coupe Define Curl Shaping Gel.

Now if Sadie isn’t ready to make the styling commitment that comes with a shorter bob, Emma Stone‘s side-parted hairstyle with sideswept bangs could give her a totally different look without sacrificing all of her length. Sideswept bangs are great for heart-shaped faces, and I would love to see Sadie’s natural highlights sweeping across her forehead.

What do you all think?

Sadie has my dream hair. The thought of her cutting it off makes me cry a little bit.

    Hey Sadie…
You do have luxurious locks of golden hair, and while I would kill to have your length right now (just received the opposite of what i wanted at my salon) i definitely think a change would be an awesome thing! Hair grows back and yours seems healthy!
I’d consider taking it up by about 5″. I wouldn’t go super short on your first out, but chopping off a fair amount might allow it to soften the blow. Then you can see if you become to addicted to trying shorter and shorter. I would go with long bangs that you can wear straight or swept. i would then chop in some uneven layers that appear a bit unrefined. I think messy hair styles are a sign of youthful freedom. So perhaps like option #1 but more dishevelled and longer pieces.
See how that goes and then see how your hair reacts…Remember also styling products are great too to weigh hair down. Bumble and Bumble makes a curling creme that helps weigh down wavy hair from frizzing out…i know from experience! put on your damp hair and go.

Sadie, I have hair identical to yours. I’m not even kidding, we are hair twins! My hair was really long too, but then I chopped it into the Posh bob. While it was cute, it was SO MUCH WORK to blow dry and flat iron every day. And forget about wearing it curly, it just looked awful.

I finally got tired of the flat iron and hair damage and am growing my hair back out again. I know it’s only hair and it grows back, but it takes a long time to grow back!

Just keep in mind if you don’t spend any time on your hair now, it’s a big adjustment to style it every day.

Your (our) hair is gorgeous and so many people envy it. I wouldn’t go drastically shorter just yet, maybe just takes a couple inches off, add some long layers and bangs that need to be styled every day so you can get the hang of it (Option 2)

    Good luck!

Wow, that is some seriously gorgeous hair! Like someone above said, it’s basically my dream hair. I wouldn’t go too much shorter, Sadie.

AT THE MOST I woud add side bangs and that’s it. Long luxurious waves are so stylish right now! Don’t cut!

Although I like Charlize a lot, I would first go for number 2 option. The number 1 seems more like her now but only with shorter hair, and anyway if she’s not happy about no 2 option she can always try no 1 after:)

I say side bangs and leave the curls and length alone. I have similar hair, only in black. Haha
