Maya Chia Supercritical Chia Oil – My Favorite Moisturizer

I recently realized that although I’ve talked about and loved this product for years, I hadn’t written a dedicated post solely to the moisturizing love of my life, Maya Chia Supercritical Chia Oil. Well, the time has come.

I stumbled across this product years ago when a fellow sensitive-skinned beauty blogger was raving about the product. Although I would classify my skin type as “normal with a tendency to be sensitive” (is that really a type?), so many serums and oils have managed to make my skin feel suffocated and congested. I’ve always considered myself to be a “less is more” kind of gal, so when I read about how hydrating yet lightweight the Supercritical Chia Oil was, I knew I had to try it.

Before we dive into my personal reasons for adoring the Supercritical, let’s talk about pure Omega-3 Chia Oil. This oil is for anyone who wants to deeply (yet naturally) moisturize their skin. This face oil is ultra lightweight, soothing and quickly absorbs without any greasy feeling.

Chia Seed Oil (especially the oil sourced by Maya Chia, which most closely mirrors the plant itself because of the way they extract the oil – psst the extraction itself is called “supercritical,” hence the name) is high in naturally occurring Vitamin B3 and Zinc, which is particularly useful in quelling inflammation associated with acne. Chia oil also far exceeds the omega fatty acid content of many major sources (wild caught salmon, for example) which means it is exceptional for restoring the skin barrier function. It also has incredibly high antioxidant levels and contains magnesium and calcium, which is great for the skin as well. Essentially, it really is a skincare superhero.

In this study published in the Annals of Dermatology on end-stage renal patients, they developed a condition called xerotic pruritus. Over an 8-week period using a 4% topical solution of chia oil, the results were pretty dramatic. That study concluded that Chia Seed Oil was clinically proven to significantly increase skin hydration, reduce trans-epidermal water loss and increase the skin barrier function.

Now, I was a pharmaceutical rep for over a decade…you can show me study after study, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to work for me. I need some real world application if you know what I’m saying. Well, I’ve been using this oil for years and it still remains my #1 moisturizer.

Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. Why do I love it so much?

NO CONGESTION

The most important reason I love this product is that it does not congest my skin. I’m the type to get small clogged pores and bumps on my face if a face oil has too many ingredients. In fact, whenever a new facial oil launches and I hear about its 20 billion active botanicals, I usually run the other way. When I apply this oil, my skin feels smooth and radiant immediately upon absorption. It never feels heavy or lingers too long on my face before soaking in. it soothes my skin and leaves a gorgeous glow, and like I said, my skin feels clear and happy.

Here is the full ingredient list:

Salvia Hispanica (Chia) Seed Extract, Citrus Aurantiaum Dulcis Peel (Neroli) Oil, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Foeniculum Vulare (Fennel) Oil, Canarium Luzonicum Gum (Elemi) Nonvolatiles, Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin Orange) Peel Oil, Illicium Verum (Anise) Fruit Seed Oil, Piper Nigrum (Black Pepper) Fruit Oil, Aniba Rosaeodora Wood, (Rosewood) Oil, Botanical extracts

PURITY

Maya Chia’s supercritical chia seed oil is prepared using a patented, gentle supercritical process to extract the oil to ensure its purity, potency and to retain all its benefits, making it one of the most nutrient-rich superfoods for the skin. The highest quality chia seed oil is sourced from conscious growers across the world and the oil is always formulated without parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, PEGs, and SLSs.

SCENT

I love energizing, uplifting scents and this particular essential oil blend is so fresh and citrusy. Lemon and grapefruit abound – perks my tired skin (and mind) right up!

PLAYS WELL WITH OTHER PRODUCTS/ THE PERFECT LAST STEP

Besides the essential oil blend, this product is 98% chia oil. That means I can layer the Supercritical Oil over all sorts of serums and toners without any sort of congestion or clashing. All my products comingle quite nicely when Supercritical is my last step, and if you have experienced products pilling on your face or getting all weird and reactive when two or more products tussle, you know how important it is to have a finishing step that locks everything in harmoniously and beautifully.

All in all, this moisturizing oil gets a 10 out of 10 for me and I really don’t see myself ever not using it. The lovely Suzanne from Maya Chia has graciously offered my readers 15% off of the Maya Chia Supercritical Oil with the code whoorl15. As always, if you have any questions for me, feel free to leave them in the comments!

Random question but how long does the bottle last since you use it daily? Thanks!

I second that…maybe even a little longer. I tend to use mine as my morning/day moisture and use something a little heavier for night cream (Josh Rosebrook Vital Balm). With daily use, 1x a day I’m a little more than halfway through the bottle I purchased in early April.

Would you use this on top of May Lindstrom Youth Dew? It seems like perhaps overkill.

I wouldn’t but to each his own.

What’s the difference between this and say a cheaper brand of chia oil like from the brand Coco kind? I’m wondering if all chia oil is the same? Is there something that Maya Chia has the others don’t? Thanks!! I love your blog ????

Great question! I don’t know anything about Cocokind, but the extraction process Maya Chia uses is very unique. You can read about it here: https://mayachia.com/the-lab/

Also, the essential oil blend in the Supercritical is my very favorite scent, although I know scent is a very personal thing!
