Odds and Ends – Beauty Edition

skin

Somehow, this week turned into a beauty and skincare extravaganza.

1. First things first, I had my first facial in over a decade this week. You should probably know that facials make me completely claustrophobic. While most of you are totally blissed out, I’m usually making a conscious effort to inhale and exhale because OMG THE HOT TOWELS AND STEAM ARE SUFFOCATING ME WHERE IS THE EXIT DON’T TOUCH ME. So when I heard about Skin Laundry and the 10-minute laser facials with no downtime, I was sold. It was pretty cool, ladies. They use two different lasers to help tighten and tone your skin in a short period of time, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of a “gorgeous, glowing complexion.” The first laser feels like baby rubber bands snapping your face, and you can’t feel the second one at all. I am pleased with the results – my skin feels smoother and seems plumper. I’m planning on going back in a few weeks – will keep you posted.

2. Guess what? I started Invisalign this week! I’m part of the Invisalign Advisory Board this year, and am receiving complimentary treatment. (Repeatedly pinching myself to ensure I’m not in a dream.)

I already have LOTS to say about my first week wearing my aligners, so keep an eye out in the next week or two.

3. Tuesday night, I attended an event at Roots – The Beauty Underground, which is a non-toxic beauty shop in Laguna Beach. The brands are simply amazing, and I learned so much about cosmetics and great skincare brands. (Tata Harper, Vapour, and Coola, to name a few. Check out all the brands here.) This came at a perfect time because I had just mentioned to you guys that I was thinking of changing up my skincare routine, so I’ll keep you posted. I’m trying some Tata Harper samples this week.) Also, I met Dotty from Moms in Charge, which is a great website for moms who are searching for ways to give their kids the best chance of living healthy, vibrant lives. Such a great organization, and if you are a local, they have monthly meetings with experts on green living, clean eating, and tons of different subjects.

4. Wednesday, I got the chance to check out Make Up For Ever’s new HD cream blushes that are debuting at Sephora in February. You all know I’m a cream blush fanatic, so I was slightly excited about this. You guys, 16 different shades, and they are all like buttah. My three favorite shades? #210, 225, and 410. Also debuting, HD pressed powder. Love love love.

Phew! I wasn’t kidding about an extravaganza. Happy weekend to you all!

OK, so full confession, cream blush scares me but I might be willing to try. As I’ve gotten older (almost 44, yikes!), I’ve lightened up on makeup, primarily switching from full coverage foundation, to tinted moisturizers/balms. I’m finding by the end of the day I look like a ghost – I currently use powder blush. Does cream blush have longer staying power? I’m not one to do touch ups throughout the day. I would also prefer a more rosy checked kind of look. I would LOVE it if I could look they way I do after a hard run :-)

Cream blush sounds like it would be perfect for you, and yes, I find it has great staying power. (More than powder blush, for sure.) This video might be of help to you.

I loved this post because of all the local content! I was just talking to my dentist about invisalign to get my teeth back to where they were after braces in my teens. I’m also super excited to check out the Skin Laundry thing. My only concern there is, are these people well-trained in laser therapy? I looked at their website, but it doesn’t seem as though they are Drs.

They are PAs, and are very well-trained. (I was a pharma rep for 10 years, and I can attest that PAs go through years of rigorous education and training…in fact, I found many PAs to know just as much, if not more, than MDs!)

Thanks for the reply. I absolutely agree with you; I’ve had great experience with PAs myself. I’d definitely feel comfortable giving it a try, knowing they are well-trained. It really sounds like an amazing treatment (and right down the street from me!). Thanks:)

OMG – I feel the same way about facials. The steam is just WAY TOO MUCH for me. I have had a few in the last couple of years and I always ask them to pull the steamer thingamabob back…which is usually responded to with a blank look. :-)

i am six weeks away from being finished with invisalign…definitely a pain in the butt, but way better than metal braces!

I’m very much looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the natural/organic makeup. I’ve secretly been hoping you’d cross over to organic makeup for some time now because I only use natural/organic (and fragrance free if I can) products and don’t have the money to spend on trying out a lot of different products.

My husband had Invisalign back in 2005-2006. He got used to the molds pretty quickly and Invisalign worked amazingly well on his teeth. They are near perfect! I only wish my current dental insurance covered Invisalign because I would use it too.

I too am super excited to hear about your take on organic/non toxic skin care and makeup! I’m crossing over too and it’s such a process finding stuff you like and that works. Keep us posted!

I’ve actually never had a facial! And after reading your description(s), I’m more inclined to try a quick one because I have a feeling I’d have the same claustrophobic reaction as you!

I’m immensely jealous that you’re getting Invisalign and can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it. I had braces when I was 18 and didn’t wear my retainer after, my teeth have kind of migrated out of place again and I’d love to fix that!

I can’t wait to hear about your invisalign experience! You should make some videos! I’m about 6 months in and have seen great results. I also lost 5 pounds because snacking is just way too much of a hassle haha

I’m looking forward to hearing about your natural beauty product experience. The Tate line looks good, but I don’t want to buy something that doesn’t work.
