Odds and Ends No. 23

ic

1. Someone PLEASE get me one of those ice cream cones.

2. Everlane silk blouse with band collar. Do it. I promise you’ll love it. (And if silk isn’t your thing, Everlane tees are the bee’s knees. I know – I own, uh, 5. Only $15!)

3. I read about Teux Deux last week via Erin, and I want to make out with it. If you’re a to-do list freak and on your computer/iPhone a lot, you simply must. BEST THING EVAH.

4. Oh, hello, I’ve eaten kale every day this week. Still looking for the perfect salad concoction, but I certainly love it wilted with a touch of olive oil and sea salt. Especially on top of this. Any kale salad favorites?

5. A ginormous list of beauty sources at The Beauty Department.

6. If you live out west, you may have experienced the heaven on earth also known as creamy tomatillo dressing from Cafe Rio. Here’s the dupe. Ridiculously pumped about this situation.

7. You’ve probably seen/read about the Dove Beauty Sketches, but have you seen the male parody? Hilarious.

8. Inspired by Mandana from The Rachel Zoe Project, I cut my hair yesterday. No, I didn’t chop it into a pixie…just added some sorely missed bangs and took about 4-5 inches off the bottom, as I was starting to look a little sister wifey. I have a lot to say about this…coming soon. And speaking of hair, here are a few articles I wrote for P&G Beauty this week. 5 Steps to Perfect Hair Prep4 Outdoor-Friendly Hair Styles.

9. At Babble, I wrote about my family’s favorite snack ever, No-Bake Energy Balls. (Hehe, balls.) Also, I’m still really into slathering my face and body with pantry items.

10. Haha, did you see this Jimmy Kimmel piece on Coachella? It is beyond awesome.

11. Christina Hendricks can do no wrong. Also liking Jennifer Lawrence’s new cut. Fresh cuts are everywhere, my friends!

12. Finally, because I was put on this earth to help you rationalize shopping purchases, 25% off everything at J. Crew right now with the code SPRINGBEST. You can thank me later.

Happy weekend to you and you and you!

I love your cut. Despite this cut you did being the
“on trend” cut right now, I think it is totally fresh feeling. The length is longer and the layers really interesting and the bangs are perfect!

    Bravo!

Here is my favorite kale salad:

raw kale (just not the stems)
shredded brussel sprouts (Trader Joes sells them in a bag, you just cut them up a bit more bc there will be some big ones in there)
Blood orange dressing (Make a normal honey/dijon dressing, but instead of using lemon, squeeze in blood orange)
    Sprinkle goat cheese on top
    Toasted almonds for extra credit

It almost ends up having the consistency of a slaw with the shredded brussel sprouts.

Equal parts of fresh lemon juice, olive oil and Braggs Amino Acids

Cut a red onion in half crossways and slice it thin – put in the dressing to marinate

Take the kale off the stem and chop fairly fine. Pour the dressing on the kale and massage the dressing into the kale – this is the secret.

You can add avocado, toasted pumpkin seeds, toasted sesame seeds, toasted sunflower seeds – or not!
Sometimes I just make it with the onion and nothing else.

The Smitten Kitchen cookbook has a great kale salad recipe. (Not on the Web site though). With goat cheese, toasted walnuts, and dried cherries.

In any case, if you slice the kale in thin ribbons, and leave it macerate in a vinegar dressing, it goes a long way toward softening up the kale and making it tasty.

My favorite kale combo is a green bell pepper chopped up, chopped kale (pretty small), feta cheese, walnuts and garbanzo beans. Dress with olive oil and balsamic and maybe a squeeze of lemon for brightness. LOVE the flavors! You could also add raspberries or strawberries for a sweeter option.

    Your hair cut is ADORABLE!

Trader Joe’s has a delicious Kale Salad – can’t remember the ingredients but perhaps a good jumping off point if you give it a try.

I second Deb Perelman’s amazing kale salad in the Smitten Kitchen cookbook. It is extraordinary and you can find it here: http://www.steamykitchen.com/24357-kale-salad-with-cherries-and-pecan-recipe.html

This kale salad is delicious. I made it twice for huge crowds and people raved about it. It makes a ton though!

Yes! My friend Kate’s recipe is my most-favorite kale (or any green) salad! http://savour-fare.com/2013/01/20/meyer-lemon-kale-salad/ Though personally, I would be happy to eat vinegar-y salty kale chips every damn day of the week.

Your new cut *almost* makes me want to cut bangs again. *Almost*!

Are the bangs uncomfortable? I am just wondering if they bother your eyes

Hi Ginger! Nope, they don’t bother me at all! Disclosure – except for this past year, I’ve had bangs for about 7 years so I’ve grown accustomed to a “veil” of hair on my forehead. ;)

I LOVE TEUX DEUX!! It helps me keep track of the 4568452 assignments and tasks I have for this last semester of college. I don’t even mind that they’re starting to charge for it.

As for kale – check out Shutterbean’s kale salad recipes. They’re wonderful. And for me, the trick for kale is to massage the dressing into it and chill it in the fridge for about 20 min. Delish!

Sarah, this is a great kale salad! Haven’t made it since last summer but you reminded me of it.
I’m excited to try it wilted. I’ve been slow to get on this kale train.
