Odds and Ends No. 18

1. I can’t stop watching this video of Marina Abramovic and her past performance art collaborator and lover, Ulay. You can read more about her here, but this video was shot during the performance piece “The Artist is Present” at MoMA in 2010. This was her most popular performance piece – a 736-hour and 30-minute static, silent piece, in which she sat immobile in the museum’s atrium, while spectators were invited to take turns sitting opposite her.

Marina and Ulay had a quite an intense love affair that started in the 70s (a younger photo here), and when they decided to end it in the late 80s, they each walked the Great Wall of China from opposite ends, met for one last hug in the middle, and went their separate ways.

Around 25 years later at her 2010 MoMA show, Ulay arrived without her knowing and, well, you’ll see. Although apparently they had seen each other a few times over the past 25 years, this is some powerful stuff. (Um, what is this fluid-like substance coming out of mah eyes right now??)

2. Again with the family photos, I really like these shots of Laura’s family. Easy, casual, and totally at home. A true representation of day-to-day life. (Although I’ve seen lovely photos of color-coordinated families in fields, that just isn’t our family’s vibe, you know? We don’t hang out in fields. Itchy chiggers and stuff.)

3. You know, it’s not until I leave Southern California and travel east that I’m reminded that humidity is THE WORST hair offender ever. (My California hair? Great. My rest-of-the-country hair? Fuh-rizzy.) Here’s a good post on dealing with humidity.

4. Best post ever on success and attitude. I’m a believer.

5. You guys, Google Reader is finito as of this summer. Can we all cry together? You remember how much I love the ‘next’ button, right? So sad about this.

6. It’s no wonder the little spaces between my fingers are so dry and I hum with nervous energy. I have air hands! (Thanks to Shutterbean for the link.)

In other news, guess who arrives today? My parents! I AM SO SO SO EXCITED, NO REALLY CAN’T YOU TELL? jumping up and down jumping up and down

Hope you all have a happy weekend!

Wasn’t that Marina Abramovic piece incredibly beautiful? Can’t stop thinking about it.

PS: I just read your post about the pixie cut and I hope that one day you try it. I took the plunge about 7 years ago and have kept it in a pixie ever since. It has made me feel more beautiful and more confident than ever before. I just love not being constricted by my hair. I think you would look incredible with a pixie…

Hi Jade! I just checked out your lovely website, and you are stunning. Absolutely stunning. If I could rock a pixie like you can, I would do it in a second!

I’m quite sad about the google reader news too, and I think this is a very bad decision on google’s part. I have problems with humidity and my hair also, but not right now in the 30 degree temps! It’ll be another few months before the humidity kicks in.

Someone came to my (recently revived, struggling for air….um, kind of like me) Blog via this post somehow. Except for the sudden, traumatic loss of the closest possible person ever in the world to me in the most unimaginable way possible nearly 20 years ago, this has been no joke, the worst ducking (sheesh, auto correct!) week of all time.

The last straw that broke the crazy vengeful lady’s heart?

The demise of Google reader. Well, it really will be okay. And funny someday.

Will someone hide these scissors? The good ones? I totally feel like cutting my own hair again right this very second.

    Oops.

*headdesk* ow, now I bumped my head!

    And, scene.

Also, Auto Correct corrected my (real) first name to “Tacky” today.

How very dare you, auto correct. Well, -*huff*- I never!

Such an emotional video. Tears here too.
And I cut my hair very short about 20 years ago too and have never grown it longer than about 2-3 inches since.

Have you found a replacement for Google Reader yet? I’m searching but to no avail! Oh how I will miss that “Next” button!

I love, love, love this video and have watched it countless times since seeing it the first time.

If you guys are looking for a good Google Reader replacement, I’ve been trying a few alternatives on for size and wholeheartedly recommend Feedly (feedly.com). It is fantastic, has a super clean layout and dare I say it, I might like it better than Reader! Once you begin using, you’ll notice a light gray icon appearing in the bottom right hand corner of blogs and websites you read. You can click that to easily add the site to your reader.

    Happy weekend!
