Double Duty Beauty

Oh lovely ladies, I have a question for you. I’m filming a segment later this month entitled “Double Duty Beauty,” and need your fab suggestions. Basically, I’d love to hear about any products you have in your home that serve two purposes in regards to beauty. For instance, using coconut oil to cook with AND to shave your legs. (Not at the same time, hopefully.) Or using lip balm to moisturize dry elbows and heels. Using a flat iron to iron your clothes…you get my drift.

Leave a comment here or forever hold your peace! Thank you in advance.

This is more of a double-duty accessory trick, but I use a bracelet as a necklace extender. I have several vintage beaded necklaces that are more of a choker length, which doesn’t necessarily match today’s styles. I don’t want to alter these beauties for current trends so I take a neutral bracelet and match to clasps to the necklace. Since the bracelet portion is lighter than the beads, they naturally sit at the back of the neck and modernize the look without permanently compromising either accessory.

I haven’t tried this yet because I don’t use primer in the summer. I’ve heard that you can use that gel that prevents chafing as a primer (I think it’s Monistat).

++Argan oil: on hair and face and elbows

++Baby shampoo: I use it as face wash (works for my sensitive skin and works well with a Clarisonic) and also use it to hand wash dedicates

++Baking soda: Scrub for the tub, toilet, kitchen sink and skin (and occasionally drink for a super acidic tummy).

++My favorite c/o comments on Cup of Jo: use the wand from eyebrow gel to tame baby hairs when wearing a ponytail. It goes on lighter and more precisely than using any other product/technique (unless you know of a better one, in which case, I’d love to hear it! I’ve got some crazy baby hairs).

I use conditioner to shave with — which is probably not a shocker — but that’s why I swipe the little travel bottles at hotels. They’re great in a pinch when you can’t pack shaving lotion.

This one is a bit intimate and similar to the first comment…any lady that experiences a little chub-a-ruba in the inner thigh department when wearing their summer skirts, try putting your regular deodorant on your skin. Totally prevents that horrible friction that can occur and you don’t need to get an extra product.

Every 2 weeks I rinse my hair with beer, massage it in, and then rinse with water. It really helps remove shampoo and product build up and makes my hair shiny.

On days I don’t feel like wearing mascara, I still curl my eyelashes and then dab a little lip balm (C.O. Bigelow rose salve is my favorite) onto my lashes. It darkens them ever-so-slightly and also separates them a little giving them more definition.

I used to have very dry patches under my eyes. I found that swiping a natural Chapstick (no menthol!) under my eyes before bedtime solved the problem.

I also steal my hubs’ shave cream for sensitive faces when I shave my bikini line. No red bumps!

There’s the obvious lemon juice for lightening hair in summer.
I recently put sea salt from the kitchen in a squirt bottle with water to spray on my curly hair and make beachy waves.
I use my face moisturizer on my hands because most lotions make me break out when I touch my face.
I use eye shadow or eyeliner on my eyebrows. I heard that it looks more natural than an eyebrow pencil.

Some of these other tips are great!

It may not qualify, but my stand-by trick – even it’s the ONLY makeup I wear that day – is to use my hair dryer to heat up my eyelash curler. I have one of your basic, drugstore metal eyelash curlers, and I run my hair dryer on HIGH for about twenty seconds on it before curling my lashes. I cannot even TELL you how amazing this works. It becomes a curling iron for your lashes!

(PLEASE DO NOT SCALD YOUR EYES. USE COMMON SENSE WHEN APPLYING HOT METAL TO YOUR EYE.)

I love the braggs apple cider vinegar as a face toner. I heard about it from the Daily Muse – http://www.thedailymuseblog.com/2011/05/apple-cider-vinegar-smells-good-on-my.html.

Babywipes = remove makeup, freshen up on “no shower” days, and to get a (TMI) cleaner feeling during that week

Vaseline = callous remedy, lip balm

    Hair conditioner = shaving cream

    Baby powder = dry shampoo

Old mascara brush = eyebrow brush (cleaned, obv)

Preparation H = reduces undereye bags

    Baby wash = facial cleanser

Deodorant on the bikini line after shaving will prevent those red bumps and razor burn from appearing.

    1. For sure coconut oil: Use as a massage oil (hubs and i try and trade) and then an extra conditioner for my hair (I swim a lot in the ocean and get really dry hair otherwise….)

    2. Epson salt, when mixed with essential oils and lavender/rosemary/jasmine flowers/plants, becomes scented, not perfumy bath salts AND a great scrub for dry heels.

    3. In a pinch, I’ve been known to take a little lipstick and a little moisturizer on the cheeks for a dewy-er look (who hasn’t)?

i use bobbi brown lip balm as an eyebrow gel and also on my lids for a bit of shine. and there’s a product called Lysine for cold sores that heals the worst pimples in a day. aquaphor is a staple too, it gets mixed with foundation, creme blush, and shadows for a lighter feel and look.

Merle Norman makes a product called SuperLube (great name, right?!) – it’s the best lip stuff out there. I’ve used it daily since my wedding 12+ years ago and now my husband and kids are fans, too. It fixes chapped lips super-fast and does double duty as a sealing layer over eye cream (for when the skin around my eyes is extra dry), as a brow groomer and as a deep moisturizer for elbows and chapped hands. One tub lasts our family over a year because a little goes a long way!
