Help! I’m Bored with My Hair!

(While typing that volume number in the title, I just realized I’ve been doing these makeovers for 4 years now. Holy shit. That is all.)

Meet Georgia.

Georgia’s hair:

Medium-dark brown. Colors at home with salon-bought hair color.
Normal condition, thick and wavy
Straightens easily
Tends to get lazy when hair is longer (ponytails)
Doesn’t want to get rid of bangs
Proficient with products and tools

Georgia sent me an email eons ago requesting advice about her (darling) hair.

From Georgia’s original email:

My main dilemma with my hair is that, well, it’s boring. I’ve had an a-line bob for as long as I can remember, with a couple short-lived pixie cuts peppered throughout. Every time I get it cut I swear I’m going to give growing it out a shot, as I’ve always wanted long hair, but as soon as it gets to my shoulders, I chop it off again. I’m curious to see how I’ll look with longer hair, but I have a feeling I look better with a short bob. I’d be into either growing it out, or cutting it short (as long as I can keep my precious bangs), I just want to know what you and your lovely readers think would look best before I put the time/effort/money/tears into it.

I recently sent Georgia an email to see if anything had changed in regards to her hair dilemma.

From Georgia’s most recent email:

I actually ended up cutting it back into a bob with sideswept bangs, but I’m still contemplating going long again, as I’ve seriously had this haircut and color for over 10 years! So I guess the question now would be, “keep it short or grow it out again?” I’d still love yours and your lovely readers advice.

Before I jump in, let’s take a look a Georgia’s hair in its chin-length state.

And a bit longer.

This could be one of the most common issues I read from prospective participants. I like my hair, but I’m so bored. And trust me, I GET IT. My hair has been the same style for several years now, but what I’ve come to realize is that my hair looks its best with my current cut. Sure, I get bored and daydream of short bobs or different colors, but I’ve tried all that and I know that my current style is what’s right for me.

I feel the exact same in regards to Georgia. The fact that she thinks of growing it out, but always ends up cutting it shorter tells me one thing. She doesn’t truly LIKE it longer. If she did, she would keep it longer, right? And why would she want it longer when it looks SO DAMN PERFECT cut at her chin! I love the way the shorter bob accentuates her jawline, as well as how her bangs highlight her lovely eyes. Georgia, your hair gets me daydreaming again.

Now, I’m not saying that I don’t like the longer length on Georgia. I like it. But I LOVE it shorter. I’m especially fond of the length in the above photo on the left of the three shorter styles. Just barely brushing her chin is the perfect length for Georgia. In fact, this cut would look beyond gorgeous.

My final word? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Just some minor tweaking will create the fresh look you’re hoping for, without sacrificing what looks best on you.

Of course, this is not a dictatorship. Do you think Georgia should grow her hair out? Do tell.

    Georgia,
You’re hair is precious & sophisticated at the same time. I’m with Sarah – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I, too, suffer from the growing/cutting disease and I have just come to terms that I look better with a chin-length bob with bangs. Feel lucky to have found your best style!

I have finally made my peace with my own hair. I am not going to have the “should I grow it out?” conversation with myself because short looks best on me and suits my personality. It’s such a weight off my mind, honestly. I play with color to spice things up. Maybe that could help?

Oh I what I wouldn’t do for Georgia’s hair, particularly in the very first picture. So fantastic, don’t change anything!

I think Georgia’s hair looks stunning when it’s short. I’m sure long hair would look beautiful too because she’s a gorgeous lady, but I think shorter is better.

I think her shorter hair goes better with her thicker bangs; it actually looks like a style. That’s one thing us long haired girls sometimes covet – a style. My hair is like Sarah’s, long, naturally wavy/curly, with side-swept bangs and I know that works for me even though I may get bored. Her first photo and all the bob photos are cute. If she just keeps some light layers in her hair so if she does want to go wavy she can but also be able to still straighten it that would be awesome. I wish I looked good in a bob but my hair is too big and wavy and would look ridiculous on me. Stick with that cute bob hairstyle and know that it’s NOT boring. Georgia, you look great.

Georgia, I know all too well about that shoulder length dilemma. I am in the same place you are right now, and I haven’t had long hair in 5 years and everytime I want to grow it out, it seems to not happen…mostly because i sit down in my stylists chair and say don’t cut it im growing it, and then the remains of a chocolate retriever at a groomers remains on the floor. I digress…
I think you could totally go shorter, and you probably looked darling with pixie cuts. I’d go back to super short with a fringe. You have great eyes that can handle it.

    or even something like this:

I’d definitely chop into the crown of your hair, i think short is super cute, but it needs some life and playfulness!

I think Georgia is fishing – she looks freaking gorgeous! You’re right on the money on her current cut – it’s perfect for her face and she really, really looks great. I would say if she’s bored, she could try fooling around with the color a little bit. Trying going warmer into the auburn area, or cooler with an ash brown. If she simply must experiment with length, she should get fitted with some of those really nice clip-in extensions. Another blog (was it Hair on the Brain?) did a post about them yesterday. That could be a fun way for her to experiment.

Damnit. I’ve been trying to grow my hair out “one last time” before I’m too old to do so (even though I probably already AM too old to do so) and then you go post that Ellen Barken picture, which is my ideal haircut (which I always go back to). Now you’ve got me thinking I just need to realize that that cut is where my hair is happiest.

Oh wait. This isn’t about me is it? Um, I think Georgia if freakin’ ADORABLE, especially in that first photo. Darlin’, you could not be any cuter. Stick with the bob; it works and you are workin’ it.

the middle picture (the flowered top) is hair perfection. Little wave, cute bangs. (It doesn’t hurt that she’s gorgeous to boot!)

    Rock the bob. Love it!

I LOVE the Ellen Barkin cut–so cute and perfect for her. I think that if she’d like a change then go for a color change!! It’s what I do when I start feeling bored with my hair style (which never changes!)

okay so clearly the majority here agrees it looks cuter short (still cute long however!). seriously – she can pull it off. and i totally nominate her for fishing.

so i say keep it long. but maybe she can do some fun color! and that could be a new change. some highlights maybe?
