Hair Share — Say Yes to Natural Color

In other words, if it ain’t broke, DON’T FIX IT. Kat’s natural hair color is a super glossy dark brown. Why spend big bucks on color?

In her own words:

I remember the first time I got highlights. It was of course because of a boy. (Don’t all dramatic hair changes result because of a boy?) I decided to go lighter and had my friend do it. Of course, she did it the wrong way so we were up until the wee hours of the morning trying to fix it. Since then (and that was maybe…ten years ago?) I’ve been highlighting my hair – I’ve had blonde-ish highlights (not a good look – trust me), reddish ones, brown ones – you name it. For a long time, I was and I’ll admit it – addicted to highlights.

That is until I saw the Hair Thursday light. The famous Whoorl recommended NOT highlighting my hair and going back to my natural color. I’ll admit, I was a bit dubious because I really liked seeing this unnatural magical blend of colors on my head.

But since this is the recession era and I was tired of always having to make appointments and shelling out so much money for highlights, I decided to make the journey back to dark hair. It’s been about six months now and I don’t miss it. I don’t miss the smell of the products, nor the insanely long period of time it took to highlight my hair. My bank is happier. I’m happier.

Plus, Whoorl was right. Having my hair one color does make it a LOT shinier (my hair stylist claims my hair is fake, it looks so shiny) and it looks a LOT healthier. It’s taken a bit of effort from my stylist to maintain the natural color as I wait for the old highlights to grow out but I love the me with my au natural hair.

I’m not saying that everyone should go back to their natural hair color but when you’re like me and it’s been years since you’ve seen your real hair color, perhaps getting back to your roots (haha, get it?!) is the way to go.

If I were to go the highlights route again, I think I’d go for very natural ones which is tough when you have such dark hair like mine. But until then, I’m loving (and hopefully rocking) it.

You are most definitely rocking it, Kat. Thanks for your sage advice and occasional ass-kissing comment. Love ya, girl. Mwah!

ah i wish i had this luxury :) her hair looks fabulous naturally! my hair is 50-60% white when i don’t color it, which would be fine if i were pushing 50, but at 26, it’s tough to go back to my roots.

Love the dark color. And you ARE rocking it.

I ended up on the Highlight Train after spending one summer as a lifeguard. I earned next to nothing, got to meet cute boys all day, and at the end of the season? Had hair the color of hay.

My hair was worse than any hair disaster you’d see in US Weekly, and my mom marched me to a salon in mid-November for something to “blend in the colors.” After years of highlights, I finally went back to my natural color and LOVED IT. But then one day I got bored. And made an appointment for highlights. Gaaah.

I’m planning to make an appointment for some redarkification this week. I’m going to consider this post A Very Important Sign telling me that my plan is a good idea!

Gorgeous, Kat! The darker color definitely makes your complexion glow, too!

I’ve never highlighted my hair (never really had the $$), but people comment all the time about how shiny it is. It’s very healthy, so maybe I’ll just leave it alone.

i went the way of blonde highlights for a guy in college, and it took me THREE YEARS to get back to my natural shade of orange/red. that disaster will never again be repeated.

    lookin’ good, Kat!

Your natural color is fabulous — going back to it was obviously a great idea. My own hair is *finally* all back to its natural state after years of highlighting and dying. Now that it’s virgin and long (literally to the small of my back), I’ll be donating it soon to either Locks of Love or Pantene Great Lengths.

Sooo many reasons to keep it natural! Thanks for the encouragement — this was definitely the right choice for me!

I really like her natural hair color. It looks so nice. I had highlights for a long time. I finally decided to keep it natural because my hair wasn’t very healthy and I like my hair a lot more than I ever did when it was a different color.

I kind of want to let my highlights go back to my natural color, but I don’t really want to dye it dark. Any advice on how to let them grow out gracefully?

Talk to you stylist about adding lowlights – you can gradually darken your hair instead of making a drastic change. Also, demi-permanent color might be a good option for you.
