hair thursday makeover 62

(I’m on a plane to Hawaii today. Awww yeah.)

Laura’s hair:

Naturally mousy brown. Dyes it dark brunette
Normal-to-oily hair
Very thick, naturally curly
Prefers length
Would straighten her hair every day if time permitted
Always straightens her bangs and if she wears it curly, she “corrects” a few curls in the front with a curling iron
Uses mousse

Okay, let’s begin. I can’t tell if it’s the lighting in the photos or what, but the color in the second (straight) photo is sublime. Shiny and chocolate and gorgeous and not brassy and RECREATE THAT COLOR HOWEVER YOU CAN, LAURA.

As for the cut, let’s take a little off (2-3 inches) and do something different with the bangs.

I’m just not loving the piecey bang look on Laura. I think she would look much better with sideswept bangs (especially with her wavy/curly hair) or no bangs at all. I used photos of straight hair to show off the layering in the front, but I think both of these hairstyles would look great worn naturally curly.

I would suggest Laura grow her bangs out in a sideswept fashion (#1) – that way they can blend with the rest of her hair throughout the process. Additionally, layering throughout will keep her long hair current without the risk of looking too bulky or dated.

Aloha!

Lopping a few inches off a long, curly style can make straightening significantly less daunting. Last time I trimmed my long hair (with curl very similar to Laura’s), I took off a mere 2-3 inches, and shaved a FULL HALF HOUR off the total blow-out time. Also? It was lighter, and had a lot more volume as a result. That’s a win-win if there ever was one.

    Love Option #2.

Between the shiny hair and pretty teeth I am essentially just plain JEALOUS, but as to the task at hand — longer bangs is definitely the way to go. It’s unfair (and as a fellow curly, I totally sympathize!) but bangs that length with curly hair make hair look dated. In fact, curly hair with straightened bangs of ANY length just mess up the balance of your hair. That, in my opinion, is why longer bangs are a must. You can straighten them with the rest of your hair or leave them curly with the rest of your hair (and you have a really nice curl pattern/texture, by the way – if I were you I’d definitely consider styling it curly sometimes).

You’ll look great no matter what you do, but I think the advice is SPOT ON here. :)

I love the Minka Kelly photo for Laura (Option #1). The deeper color and longer bangs are great. I think the no-bangs option might be a little severe with Laura’s face shape, especially pulled back. It also seems like some layering throughout will break up the curls and give them some movement (as opposed to a one-length mass that can feel uncontrollable when left curly) and, on the other hand, shorten the drying/straightening time for when Laura styles it that way. In short, I agree with Whoorl on this one!

Yay!! It’s ME! :o) I haven’t been on Hair Thursday’s website for a few months and I came here to check to see any other comparative hair types for a style idea until Whoorl evaluated me, and I found ME. Hooray!! And for ONCE I have done something right with hair, I’ve been growing my bangs out since last October. They are finally able to tuck behind my ears. I’m getting my hair done today, so will check back with new pics.

    Thanks Whoorl!!! Woo hoo!
