Charleston and Mr. Drama

My lovely family unit is leaving tomorrow morning at the crack of dawn (5:15am! Come join the festivities!) for Charleston, South Carolina. My lovely family unit is very much looking forward to this trip, even if it involves appeasing my son, Mr. Drama, on the airplane all day.

This (rather loud) drama is surely a phase, right? I mean, I know I might have a tiny bit of flair for the over-dramatic myself, but COME ON, I employ it solely for entertainment purposes. I’m an Entertainer. Not an Overly-Dramatic Fool.

(Dear Mom and Dad, you are not allowed to comment on this entry. Especially if it involves a story of my youth involving green Jello. Love, Whoorl)

Just this morning, while I was sitting in the living room, D announced that it was time to get Mr. Drama dressed for the day. You would have thought we were packing him up for the orphanage.

D: (Looking over at Mr. Drama, who is calmly playing with building blocks.) “Let’s go get dressed, buddy.”

Mr. Drama: (Calmness morphs into insta-hysterics.) “NOOOOOOOO! Mommy! Don’t go! Bye-BYYYYYEEE, Mommy! Bye, Mommy! Love you, PRECIOUS MOMMY!”

Whoorl: “Honey, I’m right here. Daddy’s just taking you to the next room to get dressed.”

Mr. Drama: (Lying on the floor, holding on to the door frame.) “I LOVE YOU, MOMMY. GOODBYYYYE….”

Whoorl: “Fine. I’ll get your clothes. Let’s go.”

Mr. Drama: “NOOOOO! DADDY! I’ll miss you, precious daddy! Bye-byyyyyye, daddy!”

Purchased the wrong kind of juice? DRAMA. Passed him the purple crayon instead of the blue one? DRAMA. Must quit playing outside because it’s dinner time? DRAMA. Max and Ruby is on the television? DRAMA. (“NOOOOOOOOOO Max and Ruby, Mommy! NOOOOOOO.”)

(I have to say, that show does kind of suck.)

You see, situations like these make it easier to understand why upon passing a rather attractive firefighter, my first thought is no longer whether or not he looks good in his skivvies. No, it seems now the most pressing matter is whether or not his fire station participates in the Infant Drop-Off Program, and maybe, just maybe, if I bat my eyelashes, he’ll look past the fact that Mr. Drama is decidedly NOT an infant and take him anyway.

(Any recommendations for good eats/shops/parks in Charleston? I’ve got a good list started, but I DON’T WANT TO MISS A THING!)

(That was a little dramatic, wasn’t it?)

I wouldn’t know anything about drama (yea, right) but all I have to add is, it’s a phase. An annoying one at best so keep a bottle handy at all times. Alcohol for you, that is.

I so enjoy explaining to others how its my son, not my daughter, that’s the family drama queen. He is so very easily wounded.

    uummmmm…..
what child are you speaking of?!!! the one who sat so perfectly in my chair for a haircut this morning was a pleasure. maybe a zanax for whoorl??!!!

I think he saves the drama for me (lucky for you) – I’m typing this as he yells PURPLE PURPLE PURPLE GOODBYE MOMMY WANT CRAYONS WAHHHHH in my face. ;) By the way, his hair looks SO cute. Thanks again!

I so hear you re: 2yo dramatics.

Also, where are Max’s and Ruby’s parents?

I yell at Chris, too, when he doesn’t hand me the right color crayon.

(But I seriously love! how he calls you PRECIOUS MOMMY. Maybe someday he’ll say that sans all caps, and then your heart will melt into a million tiny pieces. Probably when he’s 16 and he wants to borrow the car. Heh.)

Well, I can’t lie. My heart definitely melts! He’s such a doll. (You know, minus the MOMMY MOMMY I WANT NOW NOOOOOOO BYEBYEEEEEEEE part.)

When I read the line that says I’ve got a good list started, but I DON’T WANT TO MISS A THING! All I could think of is the Aerosmith song from Armageddon.

Crikey. My husband is the dramatic one in our marriage and I repeatedly tell him that Ezra had better not turn on “the dramatics” when he’s older.

However, I feel that this may be my fate.

Have fun at the fancy wedding!

The last time we were in Charleston we ate at Hominy Grill (great brunch) and Jestine’s (low country cooking). We also went to Poe’s Tavern which seemed like a total college bar/dive but had the best ahi tuna tacos (with pineapple salsa!) that I have EVER had (and I am a food snob, living in Chicago). Hubs had a really good burger there too.

My friend also said Magnolia was a great restaurant as well.

As the mom of a 2 year-old girl (drama doubled)… I feel your pain. I, in fact, stole the line from a post of yours…. “my life is a heaping pile of dogshit.”
It seems that everything I do is the exact opposite of what my little punkin wanted. Makes for very long days :)

I love Charleston. Being from South Carolina and with a brother that graduated from El Cid, the city is one of my favorites in the world. Go to Rue de Jean for hamburgers (yes, hamburgers), High Cotton & Magnolia (a must), and my favorite lunch spot Jestine’s. Meritage is lovely for drinks and tapas – have the fried green tomato napoleon. The Library is my favorite bar, well, tied with the Blind Tiger. We used to call it the Wounded Monkey or the Legless Giraffe. And for the love of God, please go to Bowen’s Island. Go. Just go.

The Citadel is neat to walk around, the Battery is lovely. Go to Fort Sumter, it’s a South Carolina must. About twenty minutes north of Charleston you can visit a working monastery. Sorry for gushing – I love it when folks visit South Carolina! Have a great time!

I LOVE Charleston! Lived there for six years – college and after. I’m nervous about recommending something that you may end up hating, but here goes.

You must go to Market Street Sweets (on market street by the market – duh) and have a praline or two – yum, yum, yum! http://www.riverstreetsweets.com/

Juanita Greenbergs Nacho Royale is also a fun, fast burrito, quesadilla and delicious margarita place. (http://www.juanitagreenbergs.com)

If you like Italian one of our favorites is Bocci’s (http://www.boccis.com)

Make sure you walk around water front park, the battery, and obviously downtown. Hope you have a great trip and flight – it is adorable that he says precious mommy – too sweet!

“Precious Mommy?” That damn near killed me. And yes, I have firsthand knowledge of this drama of which you speak. Have a fabulous time in Charleston; can’t wait to see pictures of you in The Dress!! :)

Dude, kids are better than cats. My cats don’t call me precious anything! Precious Human With Can Of Food, maybe, on a good day.

Well, I looove Charleston…I guess I’m a little biased going to school here! There are tons of restaurants on King St, Meeting St and Market St that you can’t go wrong with…Juanita’s is great mexican, Hominy Grill is yummy, Justine’s always has a line before they open cause its just THAT GOOD. Basil is great Thai, but a little more upscale. Monza is a pizza place that’s delicious. Virginia’s on King is also good. If you want seafood, try Coast on John St. Kaminskys has great dessert! Enjoy the city!!

All the restaurants everyone has mentioned are fabulous. But you MUST go to a shop called “Indigo” on Vendue Range. You won’t be sorry!!

There are also some really cool “haunted” nighttime tours if you are into that sort of thing. I haven’t done the one in Charleston (I did one in Savannah) but I heard it was fantastic. Wear comfy shoes though, you cover some ground!
