hair thursday makeover 5

Holy crap, you guys. Free ice cream for everyone!

Um, not really.

I was planning to bust out an ice cream pie chart whoorl-style, but promptly remembered it was Wednesday. As in the day before Thursday, and holy hell I need to finish Hair Thursday pronto. Another day, I suppose.

This Hair Thursday is a little different. Our first participant will not be receiving a whoorl makeover.

Meet Hala.

hala2.jpg

Have you ever heard the term “fishing”? As in fishing for compliments?

Hala is fishing. Listen honey, if your hair is shinier than mine, you ain’t getting no help from whoorl.

hala.gif

I kid, I kid. Hala’s a doll! (And a fellow SoCal mama!)

I totally understand where Hala was coming from when she sent her submission. She was just sick of her hair. Her beautiful, chocolate, shiny, perfect hair. She wanted something new. Hey, we all feel that way now and again. In fact, just this morning I nearly chopped my bangs to the scalp.

(Actually, I did cut my bangs clear to the scalp as a child in a overly dramatic attempt to piss my parents off. Unfortunately, their reaction was of hysterical laughter. Not really what I was striving for. I had to wear a headband right at my hairline for like, 3 months. Awesome.)

You know what I love most about Hala? A couple of weeks after her initial submission, she sent me another email stating that she decided to give the whoorl curling iron trick a spin. She even admitted to not thinking it would work before trying it out.

And look at the result.

hala_after1.jpg

The shine! The movement! The volume! Beautiful, right?

Do you SEE where I’m going with this? Hair Thursday Rule #2. Good hair requires effort. Say it with me, GOOD HAIR REQUIRES EFFORT.

I can honestly say that I wouldn’t want to see any other hairstyle on Hala. She looks fabulous!

*stepping down from soapbox*

Our next participant is Melanie.

melanieb4.jpg

Melanie’s hair:

Thick
A little bit of “wave” from cowlicks
Never colored
Perms her hair
Doesn’t use any styling tools
Uses product, including hair paste for definition
Loves short hair because of the ease

In Melanie’s email, she mentioned she might be rockin’ a little mullet. Yes, yes. I’m seeing some mullet action here.

Let me preface this entry by stating my feelings towards hairstyles with shorter sides and longer backs. I’m not a fan. I know, there are plenty of women who enjoy this hairstyle. Look at Meg Ryan! Lisa Rinna!

mul1.jpg

Even Cate Blanchett has been wearing the style. I wish I could be more open-minded about the modified mullet, but I just can’t. Like I said, I am made of asshole. Anti-mullet asshole. So what should we do?

mel_after.jpg

Melanie likes short hair, right? Well, let’s chop off the back! How easy would this style be? It’s so fun and fresh, plus totally stylish. Since Melanie already uses hair paste, she wouldn’t need to deal with any new products. Plus, she could stop perming her hair. The paste would give her all the definition she needs.

I emailed Melanie yesterday to ask about her current length and she mentioned that her sides had grown to approximately chin level. If that’s the case, she could also take off the back and go for a bob. Option #2 shows a great shaggy bob where the front is still a little bit shorter than the back, but not to the point where it is harsh. The razored ends of this hairstyle make it easy to add shape to the hair and create a fun flicked-out finish that would look great on Melanie.

What do you all think?

Am drooling over Option 1 for Melanie. I love, love, love that style for Melanie. Of course, it works for straight hair. What about the fact that Melanie’s hair has a bit of wave to it?

Melanie usually perms her hair, so I think the wave you see is from the perm. She says her hair is straight except for a couple of cowlicks that create a couple “waves” here and there. Thanks for pointing that out – I will add the perm info to her list.

I think Option #1 would be fun! :)

I can’t believe I’m admitting this, but I’m starting to get into these crazy hair posts. I am going to email you for advice before I go to Supercuts the next time. Uh, forget I just said that about Supercuts.

I don’t hear you talk too much about the person’s face or head. For instance, Hala and Melanie have very differently shaped faces, both hot in their own way. Wouldn’t bangs, for example, look good on someone with an angular face, but not on someone with a roundish face — or something like that… ? I think Meg Ryan looks good in that style because it complements her face, while Sharon Stone just looks gruff.

Yes, face shape plays a huge part and I wish I had more time to delve into that. I definitely think about face shape, but sometimes I just don’t have the time to type it all out. I’m just doing this in my rapidly shrinking free time, but HEY! I’ll do this for moolah and then I’ll talk about the participant’s hair ALL DAY!! ;)

Oh, man. As much as it pains me to disagree with the beautiful and all-knowing Whoorl (and I say that genuinely!), I really have to say this. I don’t think Option #1 or Option #2 is right for her – despite her permed status, even the smallest cowlick is going to rear it’s ugly, wavy head. The shorter the hair, the lighter the hair, the less weight will be pulling that cowlick into submission. Both of the options you give are stick-straight, with no allowance for said cowlick. I think she might find that either Sharon or Cynthia’s hairdos would be a nightmare on her hair. Especially on days when she doesn’t want to be chained at the hip to her flat iron.

Just a thought. I speak from experience in the “cut my hair obscenely short and now I look like Danny Bonaduce’s stunt double” department. :)

I was hoping we could eradicate her perming altogether and maybe that would help with the unnecessary volume. Plus, with the Sharon Stone cut, the “look” is very haphazard. I thought that would help in the cowlick department. If I remember correctly from your pretty Hair Gallery photo, isn’t your hair extremely curly? What would you suggest, Jamie?

The “fishing” business totally cracked me up.

The longer Melanie’s hair is, the less noticeable the cowlicks would be, right? Especially sans perm?

Definitely! Since Melanie mentioned loving short hairstyles, I was trying to find one that would be more forgiving of the cowlicks.

My hair is extremely curly, but the top has a wavelike kink to it that I hate with the fury of 1,000 suns. Still, I’m no expert – just a girl with a bitter history of flat iron abuse. :)

I am staunchly anti-perm, so I definitely think you’re right on that one. The more I think about it, I think Option #2 is a much better option than Option #1, because the length is more forgiving…and if there’s a day that she doesn’t want to straighten the hell out of it, she’s got some options.

The first step, in my opinion, is to grow out her top layer – it’s too short, and given the wave in her hair, probably has a tendency to look like a bowl sitting on top of her head. (just a guess on my part). Other than that, pick a comfortable length and request a long, modified bob like the one Cynthia is rockin’ in the pic above.

Excellent point – Option #2 definitely gives Melanie more wiggle room. You’re right – that would be her best option. But she did mention loving short hairstyles – given the cowlick, do you think there is any type of short style that would work on her?

i have an abnormal obsession with sharon stone’s hair. me being the short-haired lass that i am, i’m all for girls going short if they have the confidence and guts to do it. more power to them!

Thanks, Whoorl! I have actually had my hair cut like Sharon Stone’s before and I LOVED IT.

I just wanted to clear up a few things:
    1. The picture I submitted has no perm. That’s all me, baby. I was just saying I’ve permed in the past and am not averse to doing it again.

    2. The cowlicks are manageable, but they make the hair flip out in the back on the right side. Spiky ‘dos take care of this.

So…I’m voting for the Sharon Stone one for myself. Thanks for taking the time to ‘do’ me. ;)

Okay, YAY! I’m not crazy! I think you would fantastic with that cut. :)

I continue to be impressed with how hot your readers are. It’s a little sickening, really.

I think the Sharon Stone would look awesome on Melanie.

Aww shucks Whoorl, ya know I wasn’t fishing! I was feeling down in the dumps about losing hair after pregnancy and baby, and it just wasn’t doing what I wanted it to do for the longest time. Things are looking up now though, and I know for a fact it’s partially because I’ve been paying LOTS of attention to Hair Thursdays. :)

Thanks for the compliments, I will use this as a lesson: Appreciate what you’ve got!

Okay, so I think that option #1 would look great on Melanie due to her face shape as well (and great features for short hair). But, I would definitely NOT perm–the damage plus with that short of a hairstyle it could prove to be a disaster! I leaned towards option #2 just because I am a longer hair type of gal, but I think that Melanie will look great with #1 for sure. Okay, and Hala has such beautiful and shiny hair. I do understand the hair loss…I have a 15 m.o. and breastfed for 12 months which=major hair loss.

Forget the hair on Hala and Melanie. Check out the hair in that baby. Holey Moley! That child has rockin’ hair.

I’m SO sad you’re booked on hair Thursday until like, forever! I’m up for a cut next week; have been holding off b/c I’m running the Army 10 miler in DC on Sunday and needed it to be long enough for a ponytail for the race. Anywho… I’m hoping someone you help will have hair like mine and I can *copy* her!!! :) Thanks for sharing all your hair wisdom!
