The Lip Gloss List

One of the list suggestions in yesterday’s comments (Hi Bearca!) was my all-time favorite lip glosses. And if you know me at all, you know I am all sorts of serious when it comes to this subject. I have a small army of glosses scattered around the house. How could I possibly downgrade such an important list to the comments section?!

And really, why talk about parenting issues, global warming or the 2008 elections (Barack! I was in LA in spirit!) when you can talk about LIP GLOSS? On this here blog! Let’s get to it!

Disclaimer: Whoorl has dark hair, dark eyes and fair skin. Whoorl does not guarantee lip gloss compatibility with different skin tones. Failure to recognize this fact could lead to erroneous purchasing of lip gloss and irritability after the fact. You should not commit to new lip gloss if you have a history of finicky behavior or poor decision-making skills. Please consult a professional (like the Sephora mavens) before attempting lip gloss replacement. The professional may need to conduct a color swatch and gloss application to ensure the proper match. Lip gloss application may cause pruritis and swelling of the lips, headache, nausea and diarrhea. However, the most common side effect is suddenly looking smokin’ HOT.

Lip gloss criteria:

1. I don’t do sticky. Nothing is worse than a chunk of your freshly-washed hair stuck in your lips. I would much rather reapply than deal with the stick. Sadly, this means no MAC lip glass, Bobbi Brown lip gloss, etc.
2. Glitter is a deal breaker. I can deal with very finely-milled flecks, but that’s it. Inevitably, lip gloss wears off and those big hunks of glitter solely remain, making me look like I ate colloidal silver for breakfast.

Without further ado…

THE LIP GLOSS LIST

1. Chanel Glossimer in Spark – I think 75% of the people I know own this shade. From what I gather it looks great on pretty much anyone.

2. Delux Beauty Lip Gloss – I have about 6 or 7 of these. They aren’t sticky at all, very sheer (but buildable) and come in a tiny little tube that fits in the smallest of purses or pockets. This used to be important to me when I had a social life. Now, they can be a little tricky to find swimming in my humongous diaper bag. Oh, but they are worth it. My personal faves are:

Jasper – sheer shimmery pink
Norris – raspberry gold
Asher – shimmerless nude pink
Hank – peachy cream
Odin – mauve berry

Sephora has stopped carrying these glosses – rumor has it that Delux Beauty is going out of business. I’d shut down my business too if I just had twins and was married to McDreamy. I guess I better stock up.

3. Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Blush – This is a beautiful color. It’s definitely the most pigmented of my glosses (I usually steer towards the very sheer), but this is a no-fail compliment-getter. They say it’s a medium rose brown, but it’s more of a peachy-pink on me.

4. Stila Lip Glaze in Raspberry – They call it a “high gloss fuschia”. Frankly, that frightens me. I would say it’s a fun sheer fruity color for the summer. However, I can’t stand the clicky pen applicators. It either doesn’t release enough or overflows all over the place. Also, Apricot is a nice barely-there shade.

5. NARS lip gloss – Oh my, I love NARS. Especially the blushes. Of course, I rushed out and bought the Orgasm lip gloss to match my Orgasm blush, but sadly, it looks terrible on me. However, I really like the feel of the gloss. Metalia recently purchased Rose Birman, which intrigues me (yes, lip gloss intrigues me. Have you EVEN been paying attention?!)

So, tell me. What are your favorite lip glosses?

Oh SHIT, I’m about to faint from all the possibilities!

Oh Whoorl, I love this list. Am I the first to comment? So appropriate. Sadly, though, this list may result in me spending a chunk of change on new lip glosses because I am in the 25% of people you know who do not own Chanel Spark.

I do, however, own Chanel Glossimer in Giggle and it is my favorite all-time.

I have also become a fan of Mac lustreglasses (not sticky like the lipglasses!)

And another new fave is Vincent Longo Sophia Rose – beautiful pinky gold.

I really need to try the Delux. Haven’t gone there yet.

I have always had issues finding a gloss that wasn’t sticky. Except for MAC. I love MAC. Now I’m going to go and try me some of what you suggested :)

Serious lip gloss talk? I’ve found my people!!

I’m a fan of Fresh Lip Shine. The shade I like best is no longer listed at Sephora, and the name escapes me (Amber? Spice? something Middle Eastern-ish). Medium color, nice and glossy with no stickiness. (www.sephora.com)

Also, the double-gloss from Tarte. I have about 4 of these, like Tarzan and Jane (it has glitter, sorry, but it’s not heinous), and Fred and Ginger. Of my faves, these are the sheerest ones. (www.sephora.com)

The Cargo tins that carry two shades (Lip Gloss Duo) are also quite yummy. You need a brush (or some wipes to clean your fingers afterwards), which is a pain, but they wear well. I own Xai Xai, Hong Kong, and another one that I can’t remember.

And for a good cheap one, Avon Glazewear (quick! They’re $1.99 online now! How can you go wrong?). Seriously. They’re darker in color, not very sheer, but they glide on and stay put. I have a bunch of these, but my fave is Raisin Glaze. (www.avon.com)

Also from the cheapies, L’Oreal Rouge Pulp. Again, not as sheer, but goes on sooo well and stays put! I have like 10 of these, mainly in the brown and raisin shades. The very light ones are sheer, but if you go too light, they tend to wash the mouth out. On me, at least.

Also, I own a gloss from Revlon in a shade called Amber Ablaze that’s basically the most perfect gloss ever – just the right combo of sheer vs. color, the perfect shade, and just the barest hint of shimmer. Never fails to make me feel hot as hell.

    I’m lovin’ the suggestions already!

Tere – I LOVE the Cargo lip gloss colors, but I hate that they’re in a damn tin. I don’t want to use my fingers and I’m WAY too lazy for a brush. The sadness! I’m definitely going to check out the Fresh lip shine…

Rebecca – Sophia Rose, I’m on it.

I HATE lipstick. Hate it, HATE IT. I used to use MAC for everything, but in trying to save some $$$ after we had our kids, I tried a bunch of inexpensive brands and found that Neutrogena has great products, mineral sheers, blushes, etc. I really love their items for lips. I used their “Lip Nutrition” for a clear everyday balm, and their MoistureShine Tinted Lip Balm for color and coverage. See it here:

I am all about the Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer….wait, let me dig it out…in Nutmeg. It’s chapstick (which you TOTALLY need all the time in Colorado) with a kick!

Ditto on Cargo. I love the colors, but am far too lazy to bust out a brush every time. It’s just not portable enough.

I have one other recommendation. It’s Smashbox Lip Brilliance in Transparencies. It’s a palette with 3 different glosses that are ALL AMAZING. And, it is an awesome smooth formula that is not sticky at all. Since it has a brush inside, I don’t find it as annoying or bulky as the Cargo glosses.

Available at Sephora, so you can pick it up along with your VL Sophia Rose. :)

I could go on like this all day…

Oh my God! You have no idea how exciting this is for me. I am blonde, blue and fair so my faves are probabably way different but I too am a lip gloss fanatic.

    I love:
Bobbi Brown lip tint in Tea. Love the super lite minty tingle.

I too have Stila lip glaze but I have Blackberry. That one is border line too goopy.

Lorac lip gloss in Luscious. It looks bright red but is actually just slightly tinted on.

And my new super cheap fave is Burts Bee’s lip shimmer in Champagne. Again with the minty tingle and I think it was around $3.

    I love me some tingles.

I heart MAC lipgele in jellybabe. I love the list! I have a hard time finding good gloss. I am addicted to buying make-up, so this rocks!

Very Important Announcement…I am very excited about these Burt’s Bees lip shimmers y’all speak of. I already use the regular lip balm and I just checked their website…11 COLORS!

    ACK! WOOT! WEEEEEEE!

Oh, and I remembered another goodie from Avon: Beyond Color Lip Recovery Cream with SPF 15. They have a nude and a peach shade that are the perfect neutral, natural shades. LOVE them.

I love Bobbi Brown gloss in Tea (I don’t find it too sticky somehow, but no, no way on MAC), Laura Mercier Tender Lips, Chanel Glossimer in Giggle, Juicy Tube in Miracle and my all-time forever in my bag go-to: Kiehl’s Lip Balm hue no. 58B. It has the best consistency and the prettiest barely there berry color. It doesn’t taste like anything either. p.s. we have that sun shade too.

    Only one for me.

Bobbi Brown lip gloss tube in Twilight Shimmer. It’s the best.

Just tried on the other formula they have with a little wand in Spun Gold. That formula is a little sticky but the color was beautiful. Need to try it again.

I’m with you on the MAC. Too gloppy. I’m pretty much a one-lip gloss woman: Dr Pepper. I have tubes everywhere: car, purse, pockets, in drawers, at work. It’s got the perfect feel, it stays on, I love the tint and the smell is delicious.

I’ve tried zillions of other brands, but always wind up coming back to that. Kiehl’s No. 1 was all right for me, but a) I don’t like clear glosses unless I’m going to bed and b) it felt too smooth, too Vaseline-y. Neutrogena’s are decent.

Oh! Clinique’s Black Honey. Do they still make that? That’d be my second favorite.

I may have to give Burt’s Bees a try, though. I’m very intrigued!

I’m in heaven! I didn’t know there were others out there with such strong feelings for gloss. Ok, I absolutely love to pair them up. My favorite combo is Clinique superbalm tinted lip treatment in Mango Tint (I bought this literally like four years ago and am squeezing out the very last little bit that’s left…don’t ask why, I should really just go out and get more) I top this off with Benefit – the gloss in Chaperone. LOVE IT!
