Ode to Shana Banana

I’m sure many of you know Miss Shana of Gorillabuns. If not, you are truly missing out. In honor of Shana’s upcoming addition, several of us have decided to throw Shana a virtual baby shower.

I have had the distinct pleasure of knowing Shana way before we started writing blogs. (Which means many drunken and humiliating stories.) However, since we are celebrating an innocent BABY’S arrival, I shall pay tribute with some PG13-rated haiku attempts.

Shana Banana
our teeth look very purple
we should lay off wine

Jeff Buckley’s Grace Album
Did we listen to it for
twenty-three hours straight?

Remember Alva?
You were the first one I told
regarding marriage

You were born to film
YouTube tutorials on
sexy red lipstick

How many Cape Cods
have you ingested in your
thirty-something years?

People need to know
your feelings, karaoke
is not a joke, peeps

I have never met
anyone with a bigger
heart than you, Shana

Go give Shana your good wishes! And to read more about her, check out these other lovely blogs:

My current crushes

This post is exactly what I need right now. Thanks to Amy’s comment and Joslyn’s series for giving me the idea.

crushes.jpg

1. Tom Colicchio - I don’t know what it is, but I have had several impure thoughts about this man. Very much looking forward to the Top Chef premiere tonight.

2. Retro hairstyles - I’ve always had a soft spot for 40’s and 50’s hairstyles, and I’ve recently become obsessed with YouTube how-to videos. This gal is awesome, and I just now realized that a very brief segment of her video was shown on my Nightline segment.

3. NARS Dolce Vita lipstick with Chanel Glossimer in Pagoda on top - Shiny, pinky-rose perfection.

4. Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate - I’ve only had one of these, but it damn sure changed my life.

5. Ashley G’s Beard illustrations - I want to create a room where one wall is covered entirely in these beard illustrations. I dig a man with a good beard.

6. J Brand black cigarette jeans - My #1 clothing staple this fall.

7. Twilight movie - I’m not embarrassed to admit that my tickets have already been purchased. (Picture it now…Whoorl and 120,000 14-year-olds.)

8. Hayden Harnett bag - My new birthday gift. I’m not going to lie, I don’t know if it will fully take the place of my Gray Havana Hobo, but it is a nice change.

9. Super Hopeless Romance - Although fiction, this blog has sucked me into Cordy’s vortex. GET IT TOGETHER, SETH.

10. Relish Meal Planning System - This is beyond incredibly awesome. I love to cook, but have trouble planning my weekly menus ahead of time. This system lets me choose my weekly dinners, creates a grocery list (down to specific aisles) and takes all guesswork out of the planning process. The yummy recipes are just the icing on the cake. (This week’s menu includes dishes such as Buttermilk Unfried Chicken, Huevos Rancheros, Porcini Mushroom and Walnut Penne…)

11. Backyardigans Super Spy episode featuring Cyndi Lauper - Wito is obsessed with the Backyardigans. I am obsessed with the episodes that feature my favorite 80’s musicians.

12. This video of Andrew Bird - Sorry Tom, Andrew is still my main man.

13. The Blue-Green crayon - Best color ever.

Your turn. Who/what are your current crushes?

What? We always stand on rocks and gaze lovingly at each other.

Happy Anniversary, D.

Going shopping in my own closet

This is the second week of a feature I’m doing over at Work It Mom about shopping your own closet, instead of blowing loads of cash on new clothing items RIGHT NOW. (I’m currently working on that issue.) Following the lead of In Style Magazine’s fashion editor, I pilfered through my closet and came up with my eight core pieces for the upcoming season. Here they are, if you are remotely interested. (Also, it was really hard picking out fall/winter clothing items when it’s 90 degrees outside. GET OUT OF MY LIFE, SUMMER TEMPERATURES.)

With that being said, I couldn’t help myself yesterday and bought the most fantastic earrings ever at Anthropologie. Look at those beauties.

Baby steps, people. Baby steps.

Links Galore

1. I’m writing a weekly column that I really, really, REALLY love. The fine folks at Brita have started the Filter For Good challenge, which has already eliminated over 100 million plastic water bottles to date. (You should take the pledge yourself!)

Along with 5 other bloggers, I will be posting once a week (on Thursdays…what is up with me and Thursdays?) with simple ways to become more environmentally-friendly in your own home. (Kind of like this post I wrote here.) I’ve added a widget in my sidebar with my most recent posts. You should check it out, you know, if you give a rat’s ass about helping our planet. NO PRESSURE, MWHAHAAAAAA.

2. Today’s post at The Working Closet has some damn cute coats, if you are interested in a fine piece of outerwear. Personally, it has been 90 degrees here, so I’m hoping this post is equivalent to some sort of internet rain dance. (They say the high is 68 degrees today…I’m not buying it.)

Also, why haven’t you joined the Working Closet Flickr Pool? I want to know what you are wearing to work, people! For research, of course! Ahem. It doesn’t have to be some fancy setup, for crying out loud, I take mine in a mirror with my iPhone.

HI-TECH. (Please ignore the hair. This was a couple of hours before a much-needed cut.)

C’mon, if you can’t eradicate plastic water bottles from your life, you can at least take a photo of what you are wearing. I need some inspiration. DO IT FOR YOUR COUNTRY.

La Plates Giveaway

(First off, with all of the review-type blogs popping up, I feel the need to clarify that I do NOT write about products here unless I absolutely adore them and use them myself.)

With that being said, let me count the reasons why I love this line of darling, monogrammed melamine plates.

First off, LOOK AT THEM.

So cute. SO CUTE I WANT TO SQUEEE ALL DAY LONG.

However, the cuteness is not the only reason I feel the need to squeee. Let me elaborate.

1. The plates are made from melamine, which is unbreakable, dishwasher-safe and BPA-free. (Hallejuah!)

2. They are perfect for kids and outdoor parties. (No need to waste paper plates!)

3. The design options are limitless.

4. They make a perfect gift for a new family addition. (Heads up. If you are a personal friend and just had a baby, this is probably what you will be receiving. Surprise!)

5. The owner of La Plates, Lara, donates a percentage of revenue to differing charities. This month, she is donating 10% of her web sales to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance.

6. Just look at sweet Wito’s personal plate.

(Of course, you knew it would be green. And simple. I’m like an open book over here.)

I could go on and on, but you can learn everything you need to know at the La Plates website.

Probably because she is a Kansas girl (which makes her a lovely person from the get-go), Lara has agreed to give one La Plate to a commenter, who can choose whatever design and monogram their little heart desires.

Additionally, Lara is offering a 10% discount to all whoorl readers by using the code “laplates10″ at checkout.

From now until this Sunday, September 28th at 9pm PST, leave a comment and consider yourself entered. Good luck, and thanks to Lara for the giveaway!

I’m Really Not Here…

BUT, a few photos from my recent trip to Sun Valley are over at Melissa’s Buzz Off column at Alpha Mom today! Go tell her what YOU did for summer vacation…
