Rock Chalk
Written by whoorl · Filed Under happy happy joy joy, sports fan
I live in an area where people could care less about collegiate sports, which is a tad frustrating for a die hard like me. Why, just over the past couple of days, several people have asked if some sort of “basketball tournament thingy” was going on.
Seriously, people? YOU KILL ME.
Whatever. People have different interests, hobbies, blahdeedah.
However, if you aren’t even remotely enthused by this unbelievable last-second shot (which led to overtime), well, you just don’t have a soul.
Congratulations to my alma mater, the University of Kansas, winners of the 2008 NCAA Basketball Championship.
(Mario, call me.)
Wait! I hear you grumbling…some of you STILL don’t care. Fine. Try to deny this cuteness.

April 8th, 2008 7:49 amRock Chalk Jayhawk KU!!! What an amazing game. Mario deserves a crown. Oooh, and a bunch of women fanning him and feeding him grapes! No? Too much?

April 8th, 2008 8:05 ami’ve been waiting all tourney for your commentary. i thought maybe you had forgotten….
that last shot makes me crazy.

April 8th, 2008 8:18 amI’m afraid that I’m one of those clueless souls who doesn’t really follow sports.
Except. EXCEPT!
I watched this game. And it was incredible. And I was all alone in my living room, thinking, “Holy bajeebiz, why am I so excited right now? Why is this SO EXCITING??!?”
Converted.

April 8th, 2008 8:30 amThere’s nothing like an end-of-game comeback. Did you see that Boise State-Oklahoma (I think it was Oklahoma) football game a few years ago? I nearly hyperventilated from the excitement.

April 8th, 2008 8:35 amRock Chalk Jayhawk! Or as my kid says, “Rock Hawk Jayhawk!” I must say though, that was THE LAST game I will watch with my husband EVER. He yelled at the TV and me the. entire. time. It was awful. Someone would launch a three and he’d yell “Stupid!” and then “swish” and he’d yell “You got lucky!” Drove. me. batty.
Very happy day for the great state of Kansas.
Sadie
April 8th, 2008 8:35 amWell if it makes you feel better, I TOTALLY thought of you right away when the Jayhawks won last night…since I remembered your Kansas fervor from last year’s tourney and then they effed my brackets all to hell. But I imagined you must be elated, and since I didn’t have a horse in that race (my brackets were FUBAR’ed in the semi-finals this year), I was happy for you.
And I can’t stop calling Mario Chalmers “SuperNintendo Chalmers,” because that’s what Ralphie on The Simpsons calls the school superintendent.

April 8th, 2008 8:53 amWell done KU!!
Nice job WIto! Now, if he can just say Texas Sucks, that would be great.

April 8th, 2008 9:01 ami sent that pic w/o having read this and w/o knowing ku was the ncaa champs. go big 12-we rock!

April 8th, 2008 9:02 amI must admit, being a Mizzou alumna, I was never really much of a Kansas fan. But Wito? He’s turning me around.
Susan
April 8th, 2008 9:04 amRock Chalk!!!!
Pam
April 8th, 2008 9:14 amWe were rooting for Kansas, great outcome!
(My team didn’t even make the tourney after falling flat on its face in mid-Jan following a 14-1 start to the season. I’m slightly bitter.)

April 8th, 2008 9:37 amtalk about a game. it was awesome.

April 8th, 2008 9:40 amThe whole time I was watching, all I kept thinking was- Whoorl is dying right now! Dying! I had UNC beating UCLA for the final- boy was I off.

April 8th, 2008 9:46 amAs a former Bruin, I congratulate you and your Jayhawks! That last 3 pointer before going into OT was really something else.
Laura
April 8th, 2008 10:02 amYay for the Big XII! I’m an UNL alum. Congrats! That was a great game!

April 8th, 2008 10:06 amDude. I almost emailed you last night because I COULD. NOT. BELIEVE that shot. I told Dave I knew you had to be freaking out!!!
Also, did you see the shot of Roy W. wearing the KU sweater?
Derrick Rose
April 8th, 2008 10:08 amIf I see you at Wahoo’s, I’m gonna dump your fish enchilada on top of your head. WE WERE ROBBED!
Sarah
April 8th, 2008 10:18 amThe game was amazing!! Chamblers (or whatever because I can’t spell, or be arsed to google, XD) and his game tying 3-pointer was AMAZING!!!
And to think, I was only rooting for KU in the NC game because of Mr. Fall On His Butt/Face and then I was rooting for them because they’re great. It’s awesome to see a team that played as a team win, unlike Memphis, who seemed more concerned with their individual statistics.
Amy
April 8th, 2008 10:54 amI’m living in Lawrence and let me tell you…no one got a wink of sleep last night. Not even the kiddos. We are all still in our jammies around here!
Rock Chalk Jay Hawk! Go KU!
Emily
April 8th, 2008 11:00 amI GET YOU. For me it’s college football, but no one around here is half as passionate about it as Southerners.
Bah.
Also, I hate basketball because of the squeaking, but I still feel you on the win. That’s awesome, and you should lord it over whoever you can.

April 8th, 2008 11:01 amCongrats!
I’m not a huge basketball fan, but if it had been Texas A&M (my alma mater) in that game, I would have been as ridiculously near a heart attack as I imagine you were.

April 8th, 2008 11:07 amis it a little weird that you were the first person i thought of when i saw that kansas won? i mean, since i only know you through reading your blog it seems a little strange to me, but i feel a kinship with you over the college sports thing even though my sport is football (i’m a buckeye). and i have been in europe and not able to watch any of the tournament (which is killing me a little inside)!
So anyway, congrats, and btw, i know all kinds of little facts now about the rock chalk jayhawk thing because my husband and i just looked it up on wikipedia. very interesting!

April 8th, 2008 11:10 amLaura, I went to UNL too, and so did my husband!
I still don’t know what Rock Chalk means.

April 8th, 2008 11:36 amDude, I’m from Louisville and a huge b-ball fan (Go Cards!) and so it is that I hate Memphis with the white hot passion of a million blazing suns. I’m beyond thrilled that KU beat them in such spectacular and dramatic (daggers! in! the heart! ha!) fashion. So, thank you for that! Still wish I knew what “Rock Chalk” meant, though. OH, and to the gal who said “SuperNintendo Chalmers?” Girl done made me pee my pants.
Wito is an adorable genius. His “Beak ‘em!” reminds me of my son’s “Dunk it!” Because, well, he also is an adorable genius.
Congrats Jayhawk peeps!

April 8th, 2008 12:08 pmas a fellow jayhawk alumni I was AMAZED at last nights game, 3pt shot with 2.1 seconds on the clock??? I’m a little sad that it wasn’t Roy (he left the year after I graduated, so I kind had a sentimentality for him) who took them there and even more sad that I was not with the crowds on mass last night.
Did you hear they canceled classes too!

April 8th, 2008 2:19 pmI love college sports even though I went to a crappy college sports school (Baylor). I did, however, go to a wonderful college sports law school (University of Texas). But I always feel like a poser wearing UT garb. Nonetheless, you can’t beat the excitement of college sports. Long live the Big XII conference!
Nate
April 8th, 2008 2:34 pmGO BIG XII!!!

April 8th, 2008 2:41 pmWatching that game last night took 5 years off of my life. What a game! I am an alum, and my little bro and sis are there right now- they partied hard on Mass St. last night!
ROCK CHALK!

April 8th, 2008 3:00 pmRock Chalk Jayhawk – GO KU!!!! I have never been so happy to be living in Lawrence! What an amazing game! Nice of Roy to support his ‘boys’ even after we kicked UNC’s patootis!!! I just hope we don’t lose Bill Self to OU.
Tina
April 8th, 2008 4:02 pmOOOOO…that shot gives me chills EVERY time! I am a KU alum and live in Kansas City…we are all so proud and excited!
Amazing game, AMAZING TEAM!!!!
Rock Chalk!

April 8th, 2008 8:21 pmYou know how I feel…must say YOU REPRESENT on the coast, sister. Don’t fret. You know what is important. You know…

April 8th, 2008 8:32 pmI’m an Aggie so it’s nice to see someone from our conference win the championship. It was a good game. I’m sure Wito’s Jayhawk love is what gave them that extra bit of oomph they needed to send it to overtime.
amy
April 8th, 2008 9:37 pmI don’t get the unenthused. I really don’t. Amazing game.
Big 12 baby! Basically that is the absolute cutest Wito performance i have seen to date. I just can’t help but imagine him saying GO STATE! (oklahoma state that is)
Sara
April 9th, 2008 11:20 amWhoot! Whoot! Kansas! Awesome game.
Although it’s a little bittersweet because I had Memphis winning on my bracket (I’m sorry! No offense to your alma mater!). I was kicking butt so hard right down to this Final game! Oh well. I’m still stocked – NCAA Basketball tourneys sooooo rock!
Amy
April 9th, 2008 4:30 pmHey Whoorl,
I’ve been lurking for about 9 months now, and I did not know until now that you are a fellow KU alum. I graduated in 1998. I think we are the same age, so perhaps you graduated the same year?
KDM
April 9th, 2008 8:03 pmThat was quite a game. I thought both teams played an amazing game, but clearly Kansas played better. I really am surprised by Amanda’s comment, though, that:
“I hate Memphis with the white hot passion of a million blazing suns”
Come on, please. Did they kill your puppy? These are just kids playing a game. You win some, you lose some. No need to “hate.”

April 9th, 2008 9:25 pmI’m from North Carolina, so all I have to say is “Bah”.
Bah.

April 10th, 2008 10:12 amI am a Memphis Alum so I have to say Congrats. The game was definitely close one. Kansas played a good game.

April 10th, 2008 9:41 pmROCK CHALK!!!! The reason I linked to you (from Linda’s site) was that you’re a Jayhawk. I am OLD school, baby. Was there for ‘88 win. Have to say was ELATED for this win!! I was so manic/depressive over this game as I was in Virginia for my grandmother’s funeral. Cannot believe that after 20 years of a-hopin’ and a-prayin’ they finally do it at a time I can’t really celebrate. Oh well, me and my younger sister (fellow alum) went crazy over the win. She actually reminded me 4 minutes before OT that in ‘88 we won in OT. So I was all: “if it goes into overtime, we win!” And by gum that’s what happened!! Cannot tell you how thrilled I am. They are going to have a parade on Sunday and I am SO there. Anyway, ROCK CHALK!!
Katy
April 11th, 2008 6:05 amI have been lurking around here for awhile, but I just realized you are a fellow KU alum. I must admit I made both of my little girls stay up to celebrate and drug them both to Lawrence on Tuesday in the cold to welcome back the Hawks. You have to start ‘em early.
It’s a great time to be a Jayhawk… ROCK CHALK!

April 11th, 2008 3:11 pmOh what a glorious week it was. Beating Roy and then taking home it all. Rock Chalk!
