Hair Thursday Coming Soon…Packing Hysteria Takes Precedence

33

Hair Thursday is going to be late due to the fact that I’m leaving for Boston at 5:45 IN THE MORNING. I’m not sure if you have noticed with Daylight Savings Time, but 5:45 IN THE MORNING is a very dark time. Very night-like.

My current packing situation looks like this:

pack.jpg

In clockwise order from top left: D’s pile of shit, Whoorl’s pile of shit, Wito’s pile of shit.

This East Coast weather thing has me all sorts of confused. Temperature in the 40′s, possibly the 50′s, possible rain, possible snow, possible sun, possible wind gusts, possible GOD HELP ME JUST TELL ME WHAT TO WEAR.

All of my shoes were meant to be worn on bare feet. I don’t have socks, people. This is one of the side effects of living in the land of warm sunshine. You abandon socks! The liberation!

I was advised to bring gloves. Negative, Ghostrider. In fact, I don’t even own a winter coat that isn’t under 6 years old.

Anyhoo, mass confusion at this here point in time.

Maybe I’ll finish Hair Thursday tomorrow night when it’s midnight and I’m wondering why I can’t sleep.

(Another stressful issue: It is almost midnight in Boston! Yet, I just ate dinner here! Confusion!)

  1. I fear you and your fab hair are going to freeze your heiny off!

(On the other hand, you have a rocking Argyle sweater in that pile, so at least you’ll freeze looking adorable.)

Um, that’s Wito’s sweater. I just labeled the photo…you know, because I don’t have any PRESSING ISSUES. (Also dealing with issues of procrastination over here.)

  2. Michelle says:

Whoorl – Get ready for a bajillion requests for info. on all your clothes……So with that said, may I make the first one? Okay, thanks! It’s not really a clothing request so much as it is a shoe querry…..Where’d ya get the orange flats? Four words…a-dor-a-ble – I’m thru! Have fun in B-Town!

    Holla back,
    Michelle
PS – Can you tell I’m listening to Chingy on Rhapsody?

  3. Bring snacks.

  4. Um, I think I can ID the flats…Gap this year? Currently on sale?

  5. i wear flats when there is no rain or snow, as to not ruin, my feet don’t get that cold. remember the person you are visiting is on her own little schedule that can make for a later start in the morning.

  6. I live in Boston and I don’t own a pair of socks. Really. Never ever wear them. In the cold and snowy part of winter I wear uggs. Shut up. If you lived here you would wear them too. It’s like wearing warm cozy slippers in the snow. Without socks.

Once the snow disappears I wear my wool clogs. Stegmans. No socks. Warm as toast.

When it gets springy, I rock the crocs or wear my low blacks.

When it gets hot, sandals and flip flops.

    See, no need for socks.

Where in Boston are you going to be?

  7. LOAD THE DVD PLAYER!
    Have fun!
My bangs do a butt cut in really windy weather!

  8. Hm… if I’m not mistaken, those appear to be JCrew flats. I got a similar pair a few months ago in that kickin’ color.

  9. I live in Boston and I don’t even own a pair of gloves! You definitely don’t need them. A trench, maybe some sweaters, shirts to layer under and you’ll be good! It’s supposed to rain and be in the 40′s-50′s this weekend. At least it’s not snowing!

  10. I love that the Easterners are telling you you will be fine. And like all winter people they (and I) are fine without gloves and socks. But, you Whoorl are a California Girl and although you might make it, you may be just a little happier with at least one pair of socks and something warm for your hands. Boston is great, you’ll love it, but it is definitely not as warm as California :).

  11. Only six years old? That’s not so bad for a coat (then again, I’m no fashion plate). Could be worse — you could be bringing along one of those fluorescent Sun Ice coats from my youth. (Maybe that bit of nostalgia only works on Canadians?)

Judging by the weather we have up here in very-much-Eastern Canada, the weather in Boston is likely to be chilly and wet. I feel for your toes (as you likely will soon).

  12. Hmm..not to stress you out further Whoorl but I agree with BeachMama above. I think you’d be happier with at least one pair of socks and some gloves. As for the rest, you can layer your sweater, coat, etc. – and if you have a pashmina-type scarf that would be good too! Good luck!

  13. Oh, you’re gonna be fine; even if you forgot something it turns out you need, Boston has some fabulous shopping (e.g., Newbury Street, where I just spent WAY TOO MUCH MONEY).

My only advice to you is this: Don’t do what I did, and wear flats without socks to the airport. Because then you’ll have to walk barefoot on the airport floor while your shoes go through security, and you will die a little inside.

    Have a great trip!

  14. Perhaps they’ll sell socks and gloves at the airport.

  15. Ha ha HAAAA. I know it’s too late, but dude, I am one of those Easterners from Boston and I’m telling you, as a recent Floridian-turned-Vermonter: you will not be fine without preparation. And gloves. And warm sweaters. And good heavens, you need more than a trench.

Jealous you’re going to Boston when I’m no longer there! Vermont is a twinge far :)

  16. Hopefully everything worked out – fortunately Boston is not a tiny town in Tuscany where they only sell fabulous pashminas and olive oil. If you need something when you get there, just deal with buying it there and hope there’s room in your luggage when you get home. No need to stress! (says the person who currently has an 82 item list for her upcoming vacation to similarly odd-weathered canada)

    Have fun!

  17. I always feel bad for people traveling to Boston and checking the weather, because we cannot tell you what to pack. Pack everything. You might need all of it. Yesterday it was sunny, then snowing, then cloudy and cold, then sort of warmish and sunny again, then snowing, then sunny but cold. All in the span of 8 hours.

I will say that in my opinion, margalit is insane, and you need socks. But I will also echo metalia and say that we have stores here! So you can buy things you don’t have or forgot. But if you’re freezing and want to buy a winter coat, you’re probably out of luck since the stores are all stocking spring clothes now.

  18. natalie 42 says:

You can live without the gloves…really. I’m in Cleveland (same wacky weather) and you can get away with a coat and long sleeves. Thats what crazy winter-in-to-spring weather means for me every year: Long sleeves, normally light long sleeves, with a good coat. Check and check. You probably don’t need a big stock of sweaters is what I’m getting at here, as long as you have a coat. Um, but the sock thing? You’ll definitely need some of those! Do NOT bring shoes that you don’t want to get wet!!!!…your feet will be wet at some point. Promise. This coming from a girl with a big shoe “problem” (crazy love of shoes), you don’t want to ruin your cute flats, mama!

  19. When I’m in Boston I like to get the candy apples at the Square!

  20. Embrace the east cost, Miss Whoorl. You’re gonna LOVE it!

Also notice how I’ll come to OKC (!!) to see you but the thought of going to Boston makes me want to die a little.

  21. Nothing like traveling to Boston (where my best friend lives) from Southern California (where I live). I always seem to visit in the fall and winter and feel like a total frump because I have to wear every single warm item of clothing that I own . . . all at the same time. Pretty much the dilemma is this: everywhere else in the country is either way hotter or way colder, and also much more formal/dressy, than here. Everyone’s so fancy! And it’s so hot! Or so cold! And there’s humidity and weather! My diamond shoes are too tight!

Good luck — hope you’re staying warm.

  22. Hey, it looks like I’m going to be in the Boston area this weekend, too – atlhough I will be busy hanging out with Rob’s 94-year-old grandfather and trying not to poke my own eyes out due to boredom and frustration. Damn. I’d much prefer to force you into a blogger meetup over wine. :( Safe travels to you!

  23. Just think, “do my clothes LAYER well together.”

  24. oh good grief whoorl…boston is bittttttttter cold. but you shall survive. pack the uggs. and be prepared for that time difference to kick you flat in the face. newbury street…its great…my sister lives a block away. have fun!

  25. Miguelina says:

    A glove controversy!

I thought of you this morning when I wore a coat, scarf AND gloves. By noon I was down to a scarf. BUT I’m originally from Miami. The natives were in shorts.

    (I kid!)

  26. Well, the good news….if you don’t pack warm enough, i’m sure you won’t have any trouble finding a J.Crew or 6. Have fun, ya’lls:) Will this trip be business or pleasure?

  27. boots! i know you have boots. bust them out! with socks of course.

  28. “possible GOD HELP ME JUST TELL ME WHAT TO WEAR” – hilarious! And pretty much my mantra every.single.time I pack to go well, anywhere. But you strike me as someone who will look appropriate no matter what – not a skill I have! Hope you’re having fun.

  29. Pretty much echoing what every other Boston resident said above, but… No, we don’t think it’s that bad. Yes, you probably will. Just remember that in our minds, the snow has pretty much melted so that means it must be like 80 degrees. Nevermind that it’s actually still cold, and windy, and rainy/snowy/sleeting -we shall WILL IT TO BE WARM. It might work, one of these days.

  30. Hank has the same argyle sweater as Wito! Given his recent Barry Bonds-like growth spurt, it doesn’t fit anymore. Maybe I’ll make it into a pillow. I have no idea how to do that, but I love the contrast of the striped back.
Okay – have a great time in Boston.

  31. You DON’T OWN SOCKS?

That’s it. I’m moving to California.

Hope the flight went well, and you have a great stay!

  32. A little late here reading and posting. You are off and on your way at this point, Hope you have a great time. Boston is great fun and I wish I did more exploring of it when I lived there I left after H.S. and well never went back :) Did you get some socks?

  33. I love the gray sweater in your pile of shit! it looks as if it might be fabulous.
