The Emmy Awards (OMG, I’M GOING.)

48

The Emmy Awards. Rosacea. Two peas in a pod, right? Hmmm, let me see if I can bring you full circle.

If you’ve been around here for awhile, you know that I deal with mild rosacea. (I’ve mentioned it here and here. Also, here’s a short video on the condition.) For me, rosacea USUALLY means flushed cheeks while drinking wine or a ridiculously bright red face while working out. Apparently this week, however, it means I’M GOING TO THE EMMY AWARDS, as a guest of Galderma. (Galderma makes Cetaphil, and their Gentle Skin Cleanser, combined with a few other products in my arsenal, has been the key to managing my rosacea for quite some time.) Funny how these things work, no? Circle complete!

This Sunday morning, I am heading up to LA where I will spend the day getting red carpet ready (hair, makeup, the works!) with two other beauty bloggers before attending the awards with D that evening. I DIE. Okay, okay…let’s get to the pressing issues…what am I going to wear? Well, as much as I want to rush out and buy something new (because I DO), I am going to save my pennies and wear an old faithful. Have you ever bought a dress off the rack that felt like it was specifically made for you? I found a black, vintage-inspired Dolce & Gabbana dress years ago at a Neiman Marcus final call sale, and it was love a first sight (and fit). Since it’s black, I figured a little sparkle on my shoes might be nice.

As for hair and makeup, I’m thinking a side chignon and red lip. I’ll keep you posted on that one…no matter what, I will be firmly enforcing Operation No Hot Mess with the makeup artist, as to keep my face from looking like the last time I had my makeup done professionally in LA.

Enough about me, let’s talk about the actors I could possibly see in person. Jon Hamm, Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, Jane Krakowski (huge 30 Rock fan over here), Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Christina Hendricks, Jon Stewart, Cat Deeley (SYTYCD, holla!), Jane Lynch…the list goes on and on, but let’s get real, folks. Friday Night Lights was my favorite television show ever, and it’s up for Best Drama. Seeing anyone from that show will give me heart palpitations, but could it be that Tim Riggins will be in the house??? D will have to restrain me from chasing after him like a rabid dog. (I kid, I kid. I am always a lady. A “lady forever,” I suppose. TEXAS FOREVER, TIM.) Who else should I be on the lookout for? Should I just stay in the ladies bathroom all night, waiting for a big time celebrity to walk in? I’m considering it.

Can you sense the excitement over here? Really, really excited.

Back to reality for a second. I’m doing a little giveaway for my fellow rosacea-prone friends out there. Galderma is offering a prize pack of Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and and Cetaphil Facial Moisturizer to 2 readers. To win one of the prize packs yourself, submit a rosacea-related makeup or skincare question in the comments and you’ll be entered to win. Winner announced Monday, September 19th.

(To everyone, though, remind me who needs to be on my radar! Who would be your #1 celebrity sighting? My head is spinning. TIM RIGGINS, Y’ALL. I AM FOURTEEN YEARS OLD.)

  1. Oh my goodness. Of course you are going. And I will not be surprised when you get mistaken for an actor on the red carpet. Totally living vicarious through you!

    Steph

  2. WHAT?!?!?!?!? THIS IS AMAZING.

  3. Oh wow. Just WOW.

Any of the fnl men (or women for that matter… i.e. Tami!!) would put me in a total state of AWE… but as much as I love Tim, Coach Taylor (or should I say Eric?) would be my #1.

  4. Those SHOES are amazing. I can’t wait to see the whole look—I know it’s going to stunning.

  5. p.s.

I really, really hope they win.

  6. DUDE! This is so exciting! I’m sure whatever you wear and however your hair/make up is done you will look stunning as always. I can’t wait to hear all about it. I hope you have a good celeb run in but maybe not while you are peeing.

  7. OMGoodness!!! Tim Riggins FO SHO!! So over the moon excited for you and D! You’re going to be the Brad and Angelina knock out pair on the red carpet!!! :-) Have fun!!

  8. I so did not understand the Tim Riggins love until I watched FNL. And then. . . I did. Because, dude, how could you not LOVE Tim Riggins?

  9. Have so much fun! Rosacea question: I am having difficulty finding a moisturizer with SPF that calms down the redness and fits my budget. Lately my moisturizer has been causing acne breakouts…
I use cetaphil on the daughter’s sensitive skin, never considered it for my own issues. Maybe I will win and can try it!

  10. SO EXCITED for you! I’ll be looking for your pretty face on the T.V.

  11. first of all, yay! for you. second, so glad to find another alcohol-induced rosacea sufferer. one sip and i look like i’ve run a marathon. it’s awful. can you elaborate on the “few other products in my arsenal”? i have searched high and low for a combination of moisturizing and cleansing products that work together with no luck. and any insider tips you’ve come across on bringing the redness down quickly?

  12. AWESOME.

(Also, at the wedding I shot last weekend, those were the bride’s shoes. LOVE THEM.)

  13. Have fun at the show! I’d love to win a Cetaphil pack. Hmm…my skin questions are:

“At what age do symptoms of rosacea appear? Can the perma-red cheeks be signs even in young children?”

    Thanks!

  14. If you see Tim Riggins I will die from jealousy, just die. As for a rosacea-related question, I get SUPER red after a light workout. Is there a way to make that go away sooner? An hour and post-workout shower later, I’m still tomato red.

  15. So exciting!
I too have rosacea issues with my skin. I’m red for hours after I run or workout. What do you do to calm your skin after a workout? Are there certain products you use daily to help reduce redness (other than cetaphil, which I already use).
I just started watching FNL and Tim Riggins! Yes!! Also I would LOVE to see Tina Fey. Did you read her book?! Hilarious and awesome.

  16. Awesome – that is so exciting. Killer shoes too!

I have rosacea and my question is along the lines of looking for something i could dab onto those areas under my makeup to lessen the redness. Something that is also a “treatment” would be good too – treats and covers.

Be on the lookout for Tina Fey!! Have so much fun!!!

    ~Beth

  17. Hooray! Enjoy the red carpet… just don’t be RED on the red carpet (as a rosacea sufferer, I can say this to you and not be insulting, right?)

I have used Clinique Redness Solutions over the past year. Is it really making a difference in my redness? Meh. It’s expensive. It has calming properties and makes me look less like a baby-butt rash… but not sure if the calming really lasts under foundation.

So here is my makeup-related rosacea question–have you found a foundation that REALLY covers your redness to your satisfaction, and provides redness coverage that LASTS? Need help stat!

Thank you for bringing this up. I hate my red skin only a little less when I drink… but only because of the effects of the alcohol. I really would like to find something that works!

  18. Really? I didn’t know that my bright bright red face while doing anything exercise-ish was attributed to rosacea!! What else do you use skincare wise to keep it under control? Thanks

  19. Awesome! Have fun and enjoy!

I have rosacea and it has been under control for the past year. I too use Cethaphil as a cleanser. For moisturizer, CeraVe is my favorite. I used two different ones, during the day (CeraVe AM) and during nights (CeraVe PM). I switched make-up to BareMinerals, a little pricey but works for me.

My skin gets red when I drink wine, eat some spicy food, eat chocolate (which I love!) and/or I’m under stress.

  20. I have rosacea. Crazy-mad rosacea with otherwise pale skin. Disaster. I used an (expensive) Joey New York rosacea-specific product for a long time until they stopped making it. It was . . .OK. then I switched to Clinique’s Redness Solutions line. It’s . . .OK. I never thought to just use a gentle product, I was always thinking that I had to find something rosacea-specific. Have you found a foundation that works for you that the red doesn’t just shine through? Do you use blush of any sort? i’m always afraid that the two tones will clash and I’ll look like a bizarre clown.

  21. HECK YES. You are going to have amazing amounts of fun. UH-mazing! Can’t wait to see pics and yeah, there would be so! many people I would be psyched to see/meet/ogle shamelessly at the Emmys.

Michael C. Hall, Hugh Laurie, Timothy Olyphant. TIMOTHY OLYPHANT.

And now I’m not going to be able to concentrate for the rest of the afternoon. (Not that I’m complaining.)

    (TIMOTHY OLYPHANT.)

  22. I also have mild to OMG FLAMING FACE rocacea. I have the same question as Robyn. I would love to know what other products you use too. I feel like I have tried everything on the market and it all sucks.

  23. I have been trying to cover up my rosacea ever since I can remember! I am so embarrassed of how red and splotchy my face gets when I work out–but even worse, how long it stays like that long after the exercise is over. Is there a way for us to get our faces more speedily/completely transitioned back to normal face colors?

  24. Not entering the giveaway, but wanted to say I’m a HUGE fan of Cetaphil products and have used them exclusively since I was 16 years old. The only problem I have with them is that they are made with almond oil and I have a daughter allergic to nuts, so she can’t use them on her super-sensitive skin. :(

  25. While I love me some Riggins, I would die for Coach Taylor. So look for him for me please!

    Also Tina Fey.

  26. Oh, I loved FNL, too. I’m going to cry if Tami Taylor finally gets her Emmy, y’all.

  27. How exciting for you!

My mom deals with rosacea and hers can get pretty bad underneath her eyes. So much so that she hasn’t been able to wear makeup for years. She has no health insurance either so she’s kind of had to adapt to having it. I think I might recommend these products to her.

She’s only had this come up in the last five years so I’m not really sure what caused it. But it can be pretty painful for her at times.

I’m not sure I have much of a question to ask, just excited to maybe offer her some relief with their products.

Also, I’d be running to Kyle Chandler while you ran to Taylor Kitsch. And I would probably even plant one on Connie Britton. I think Tammy Taylor might be one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. I can’t wait to see Connie’s new show on FX this fall.

  28. Two words I never thought I’d ever hear from you: Texas Forever.

(Have a great time – I can’t wait to hear all about it next Thursday)

  29. Christine H. says:

I also would like to know what your other products are and which ones, if any, help with rosacea-acne on either side of the nose. This is my biggest problem; my face looks worse than in high school.

Congrats on going to the Emmys!

  30. I am also a rosacea sufferer and have been interested hearing your secrets since your skin always looks so nice.

I have tried prescriptions and they have never worked. I have much the same type of rosacea you described – red wine and exercise induced. Also anxiety induced which is a fun one! My questions are much the same as the ones above:

What other products do you use? Have you seen a dermatologist for the issue?

Thanks for talking about this, it’s always nice to hear what others have tried!

  31. To my fellow rosacea ladies,

I will definitely put together a post on the products I use for my face. Look out for it in the upcoming weeks!

  32. Holy cow, girl!! Have so much fun and report back!

  33. Elizabeth L says:

Looking forward to your rosacea products post.

My doc recommended CeraVe and I started using it and found it stung my face. Want to like it but found it made me more red. Have others experienced this?

  34. Ohmigosh, I’m so excited for you. I’d jump in front of a car to meet the cast of True Blood, but I don’t think they’re up for any awards so they may not be there. But if you do happen to run into Alexander Skarsgard, could you tell him Haley loves him from afar? Thanks. ;)

  35. OMG!!! I want to be you right now! I MAY be slightly jealous. um.. OK so Cetaphil is my drug. I can’t live without it. If I had use only one thing on my face (including makeup) it would be my Cetaphil cleanser. I have converted many friends to using it because it really is the BEST out there.

  36. Sonja von Franck says:

But of course you are going! Great things are always happening with you which is why we always stay tuned! I guess good things happen to good people. I love that Pinterest picture, and you would have the moxy to pull off the side chignon. I would always fall back on making the most of my long hair, so I can’t wait to see you pull it off!! Can’t wait to see the pictures!!

  37. Oh my gosh, the fact that you have the chance to see Tim Riggins in REAL PERSON, well. It is too much.

  38. MY GOODNESS! Please, please, please enjoy every moment you can with Jon Hamm. I’m sitting jealous over here. That is all. P.S. I love Cetaphil.

  39. Have a blast! Would Gerard Butler show up to the Emmys? :-) Enjoy!!

  40. Very exciting news for you!

I never considered that I might have Rosacea until last year. I have always ended up with a bright red face from exercise and if I blush it lasts for hours. When I was at the eye doctor a while ago he said something to the affect of “Those with rosacea like yours often causes bloodshot eyes too.” Huh? Rosacia like mine?! But it sounds like a legitimate answer.

So… what other products (aside from the Cetaphil cleanser) do you use to manage your Rosacea?

  41. omg, i’m so jelly! have SO much fun.

just remember – clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.

  42. So glad you’re putting a post on rosacea together! I’ve been dealing with mine for a couple of years now…tried fancy creams (didn’t work) and a Doxycycline prescription from my derm (good, but can’t take forever). I guess my question would be, does rosacea affect not only the coloring of your skin (red!) but the condition as well? I feel like my face has become drier, puffy and more “blah” since my rosacea has gotten worse. Are their products that will help both the redness and the “blah-ness” (scientific term)? Thanks!!

  43. Ugh, rosacea, I have it, too – do you know if it is the rosacea that makes the weird little bumps in your skin? Not zits, but little bumps, which have, well, stuff, in them. Not that I squeeze them (fine, I might sometimes). Anyway, would love to win and have people weigh in on the bumps and also whether anyone has any tricks to make them go AWAY.

  44. So excited for you! Can not wait to read the report!!

  45. How utterly exciting!
Question: how do you tackle puffy eyes even when using gentle cleansers?

  46. Ugh, I suffer from rosacea too. Does pregnancy make it worse because it seemed to worsen after my first and my face is even pinker with this pregnancy too! And can it affect other parts of your body too because I seem to have it on the back of my arms too??

    Have fun at the Emmy’s!!!
