Running Revisited

Remember Whoorl: The Running Blog?

Neither do I!

(This may or may not have stemmed from a recent 2-month sabbatical of sorts. It was just supposed to be a holiday thing, but um, YEAH.)

Regardless, I ended said sabbatical this morning.

It’s been awhile since I spoke of my ongoing quest for running gear and my final verdict, and I have some additions for those who ARE ON THE EDGE OF THEIR SEATS.

Being that it’s in the high 40s during the morning, those Adidas shorts just aren’t hacking it. I had to conduct another highly scientific study (you know, trotting up and down the sidewalk with wine in hand) involving running tights, pants, capris, etc. I’m not really thrilled with running tights…they’re just so tight. On the other hand, the baggy pants interfere with my highly-athletic stride. (HA.)

These pants (actually, capris) from Nike seem to work very well. They are snug through the hips and thigh, but have a little flare at the bottom to keep my legs from looking like stuffed sausages. Plus, my legs stayed warm (but never got hot) and they wicked any sweat right away. Cool beans. Also, I scored a great deal on this jacket (perfect shade of green!) in the clearance section.

Just, you know, keeping you in the loop about my running because you care SO MUCH.

I’m still trying to find The Perfect Sports Bra For Running, though. Any suggestions?

  1. I. Have. No. Boobs.

Nursing three babies does that to ya.

So…I can pretty much run bra-less. Please don’t picture that. It’s not pretty.

The sports bra that I have is from lululemon, and is nice.

One of my girlfriends has big knockers and swears by the lululemon sports bra titled, “Let Me Hold Those For You”

I cannot remember what mine was called, but I think it was along the lines of,

    “Hahahahahahaha! Why even bother?”

  2. Not sure what kind of boobage you posses, but I’m a 34DD and I’ve found success with Title Nine’s products for all my work out needs. They rate their bras with a series of barbells according to the level of support they provide to help you find what you’re looking for. In general, they have great, very high quality stuff. Sometimes it’s a little too flowery for me, but over all superb!

  3. So far I’ve just used the C9 Champion sports bras from Target, but I’m pretty flat-chested and don’t need to worry about too much bouncing.

I dig the product reviews though, I’m obsessed with fitness gear now.

  4. sigh. 34a here. sigh again.

i wear gap body bras (darn gap site is down otherwise i’d link). i don’t know if they were intended for sports but i’ve found sports bras to be so big and intimidating. and they make your chest look weird.

the gap body bra that i wear is like a tank top…with spaghetti straps only short. and it works well for my small chest! plus it’s cotton.

  5. I own far too many sports bras and hate the majority of them. My favorite since last summer is this one by Moving Comfort:
    http://www.movingcomfort.com/Product/bc_010.html

I bought it in a Lucy store.

    It fulfills the following criteria:
    - Holds the (B-C cup) ta-tas in place, through vigorous jumping/bouncing/etc.
    - Compresses, but doesn’t morph my body – i.e. no uniboob or quadriboob.
    - Smooth, nice fabric – so no dry arm chafing while running
    - Keeps its shape. (I even machine wash in a lingerie bag, air dry)
    - Wicks sweat away

  6. C9 from Target has some decent knockoffs of those pants. Unfortunately, the ones I bought have some sort of goofy swirly design on the side. But they are $35.00 cheaper. I’d spring for the Nikes if I thought I was going to be seen by people I know when I run, but I’m not.

  7. My fave is from Shock Absorber. They have individual cups and they hold. I have a very large chest on a small frame and with this bra they don’t move at all. Much better than compression bras with no individual cups that just make you feel like you have a tensor bandage on. I have style B517 and find it very comfortable. http://www.shockabsorber.co.uk/bounceometer/shock.html

  8. i just got 2 new sports bras from lululemon. and one of them i am truly fond of. check it out. http://www.lululemon.com/products/womens/tops/bras/boost_bra
i also love this one. http://www.lululemon.com/products/womens/tops/bras/flow_y_bra
i used to be so loyal to nike. but i haven’t been able to fall in love with their sports bras as of late.
    i must try those pants.
i am off for my evening run and you motivated me right off my arse.

  9. Oh, and I am somewhat busty (34C), and I wear a C9 (the ones without cups, the cups ones are terrible) and I just wear a thin lined underwire underneath. This is a habit from my 34D days (10 lbs ago, ALL 10 WERE IN MY BOOBS), and I find that combo to work best.

  10. Catherine says:

I’m gonna piggy-back and ask your readers a related question, if you don’t mind. I work out on the elliptical machine, and after about 20 minutes, my feet HURT. I read somewhere that it’s because your feet always have pressure on them. Anyway, my question is this: anyone have a recommendation for good shoes to wear on gym equipment??? Thanks!! Oh, also, I have large boobies (I got fat while pregnant) and have yet to find a good bra.

  11. I have yet to find ‘the bra’ too….right now, I am wearing La Senza sport bras. I’m not sure if La Senza is offered ‘down south’ (the States as opposed to Canada). I don’t normally shop there but the one thing I like about the bra is that it is ever so slightly padded…why can’t more companies make sport bras that deal with the ‘headlight’ problem? I can’t be the only woman out there with this problem (or maybe I am?)

  12. Title 9 Frog Bra is the best. It kind of smooshes (?) your boobs, but they sure don’t move at all.

  13. I’m newish here and missed the first two rounds of your running gear quest. Try runningskirts.com — they have briefs rather than compression shorts underneath, and really, they don’t flip up and show your tush to the world. They have sales sometimes, so sign up for their mailing list. I love them so much I actually posted a photo of my butt on the internet wearing one!

As for sports bras, I’m kinda small (34B), but I’m also petite. I usually don’t a good fit because the straps are too long. I’m a sucker for the cheapness of the C9/Target bras, they’re good enough, usually. I’m not fast! My favorite is from Under Armour, I actually got it for free in exchange for wear testing and writing a review for Glamour! It’s a little snug when I first put it on, but it’s the only one that actually fits. And, it has padded straps, nice touch.

  14. Michelle in Cincinnati says:

Whoorl – Give Title 9 a try….they have this bar bell system for their exercise bras… (one being the least supportive to 5 or 6 being the most supportive). Go to http://www.title9.com, and they have tons of great stuff! Hope this helps!

  15. i just started back up with the running after almost a year. And my running means running a few minutes on a treadmill and then walking a minute or two. Or 17.

And it is -2 outside, so it is ALL treadmill.

I’m excited to see your take on the bras. I need assvice!

  16. YES!! I recently found the sports bra of mah DREAMS at Target. (I know! I had tried MUCH more expensive places…)

Here is the link — http://www.target.com/C9-Champion-Seamless-Camisole-Bra/dp/B000V2B2MW/sr=1-18/qid=1200841832/ref=sr_1_18/601-4594834-8527337?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Asports%20bra&page=1

It looks unsupportive because of the straps, but works GREAT! It’s also cute. :)

*Disclaimer – I have a small frame, size B boobs, and am 5’1″, so the adjustable straps made ALL the difference in the world for me. Most women probably don’t have the same woes I do. But this bra is freaking fantastic. And only $17. Woah.

  17. Echoing everyone else on Title 9. http://www.titlenine.com/

I’m a horribly floppy D – when I started running again, I order five or six of the four-barbell styles there and kept two: the Three Reasons and the LW Underwire Bra. Before that, I wore two jog bras at a time.

I’m new to your blog, but am kind of psyched to go check out your running posts~ and I have those Nike pants too – love them!

  18. I have to chime in for Title Nine as well. They have a great range of sizes and the barbell ratings are very helpful.

  19. I remember whoorl the running blog and I’m glad to see it back!

  20. Miss Virginia says:

I LOVE “Whoorl the running blog” and “Whoorl the product blog”. Anything clothing, shoes, shampoos and gels, cleaning supplies, whatevah…you say it…i buy it. THANK YOU, whoorl! You’ve taken all the guess work, time and uncertainty out of my life. Please keep ‘em comin’.

  21. I somehow got myself talked into running a half marathon in April. I have never really been a runner before. I just started training and I think I might die. I need to sit down and see what your recommendations for running gear are. I have heard horrible stories of toe nails falling off due to wearing the wrong shoes. I also need to find a good sports bra. I am still nursing my baby and let’s just say the ones I used to wear just don’t seem to fit quite right.

  22. I have those pants and I looooove them. Also, they were $12 at the Rack which makes me love them more. My sports bras are all Victoria’s Secret. I’m a 34 C and they’re perfect.

  23. the gap side is back up! here’s the bra that i wear. http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=35213&pid=111440

and i see that they also have sports bras as well.

  24. I love those pants. Perfect. As for a great running bra… I’m pretty busty and love GapBody’s sports bra – but I’m not sure I’d say it’s the perfect sports bra for running. It sure does keep the ladies in place though.

  25. I’m not sure why this post is the one that I’m finally choosing to de-lurk on, but here I am! I happened on your blog linked from a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend (ah the miracle of the internet) and in fear of sounding like a stalker, I love it! I could gush, but won’t. Anyway, sports bras – I found mine at Target: http://www.target.com/C9-Champion-Seamless-Cami-Bra/dp/B000RTP392/sr=1-15/qid=1200949838/ref=sr_1_15/601-8709437-3684932?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Asports%20bra&page=1
and I love it! I, however, am 5’8″ with barely a B cup (nursing two kids did that to me). I also just got back into running myself with the Couch to 5K running plan – was it here that I read about that? ah, anyway, thank you for all of your wonderful posts!

  26. I don’t know if you have Berlei in the States, but they make the best sports bras in the world. They strap you in (regardless of how big or small you are) and nothing moves! Well, nearly nothing anyway.

    http://www.berlei.com.au/Research/default.asp

  27. i am with amy and angella, i bought my mom a bunch of stuff from lululemon for xmas, you know the okla workout queen, she loved it all. they have supportive combo tank/bra and just bras. as far as more pants they have about 20 different kinds, plus the store is well done-for those of us who care

  28. This is why I run on my treadmill…so I can hold my boobs while I run.

Right now I’m suffering from plantar fasciitis, so my boobs are getting a break from slapping me in the face.

  29. Add me to the list of small boobs! I was just on lulumon the other day and they looked liked they had a good selection. I usually wear a running tank with the bra in it.

These comments are cracking me up!

  30. ohhh and I wanted to ask an odd question well not that odd I guess… What do you do with your bangs when you run?? Any one feel free to chime in too. I had bangs last summer when I was running and the were a big PITA! I am getting a cut tomorrow and wanted to get some sideswept bangs then remember I would be starting to run again in a few months so not sure now. Anyhoo just curious?

I wear a baseball cap when I run- keeps my bangs back and the sun out of my eyes.

  31. Funny to see you are back at running as I started the couch to 5k last week. I hope to be running the 5K in May at our National Capital Marathon. Thanks for the link.

And sports bras, I have a bunch of them from Reebock, got them at the outlet and these puppies don’t move in them (think nursing Mom here).

  32. I’ve been looking for a good quality sports bra, without any luck yet….

  33. Filtering Life says:

I am tired just reading about your running. You have more ambition than I could dream of right now. I am just going to help myself to another brownie.

  34. I have a running blog too! I have 26.2 miles to run in April and I need to be accountable to SOMEONE during my training! Better the entire blogosphere than no one at all.

For gear: I am a HUGE Saucony sneaker fan and a great admirer of all things Lululemon. They are aerodynamic, sweat-wicking, devastatingly flattering and utterly chic.

It helps to look good when you’re hacking up a lung. Distracts the curious onlookers …

  35. The BEST pants in the whole wide world to run in are made by prana. I wear the asana, but the newer elise would do just as well. Here’s the main thing – they don’t chafe. Before my son was born, I used to train and run halfs, so chafe on your inner legs can be bummer. Even now, when I’m only out for a 3 or 4 mile run, I choose these over shorts any day. The fabric is a dream. You can find them at REI or on the website.

    Cheers!

  36. In terms of pants, Puma actually makes a bunch that I adore. As for the sports bra, I have a bunch of different kinds, since wearing the same kind all the time tends to…well, something — mixing it up just feels better somehow.
