hair thursday makeover 29

22

Holy crap, today was so amazing. I felt like a total celebrity for most of the afternoon, but now have returned to my Gap pajama pants, glasses and ponytail. Well, it was fun while it lasted. I’ll keep you posted, though….

Let’s get to it! Melissa is our first participant of the evening.

Melissa’s hair:

Naturally dark brown, with new caramel highlights
Slightly wavy, but only when it’s longer. Straight when shorter.
Daily time spent on hair: 30 seconds to brush and put in a ponytail
Melissa says, “I have had it short and long and everywhere in between, both straight and curly. I love my hair chin length or shorter (and so does my husband and everyone who knows me!), but I always end up growing it out so I can pull it back in a ponytail!”
She’s tired of the bob thing
Likes the idea of long hair, but it never looks “right”

Drum roll, please!

Say bye-bye to that ponytail, Melissa! Your beautiful face was meant for shorter hair!

I love Option #1- it is such a chic style and would fully complement Melissa’s texture, shine and face shape. (Not that you care, but THAT is the haircut I would go for if I went short.)

Option #2 is a bob. I’m sorry! I know Melissa is so over bobs, but the fact of the matter is, she looks great with that shape. Sometimes, you just gotta do what you gotta do. (And like I was going to suggest a mullet.) Chin-length would be beautiful.

What do you all think?

Marya:

Marya’s hair:

Very fine and wavy
Doesn’t style it, just brushes it with a “crap nylon-bristle brush that I got at Wal-Mart”
Wants it to be better looking and more manageable
Likes it long
Doesn’t want to heat-style because she is “lazy”

Oh Marya, Marya, Marya. The bad news. Your hair needs assistance STAT.

The good news. Your hair has so much potential! I predict YOU are going to be the update that blows everyone away. When you start giving a little TLC, you are going to look unbelievable. TRUST ME, MARYA.

Just for you, I’ve created a little action plan.

OPERATION MARYA HOTNESS:

1. Ditch your shampoo and conditioner. Buy this and this. (You can get it at any drugstore.)

2. Ditch your crap nylon Walmart brush and buy a round boar-bristle brush like this. While you are at the drugstore, buy one of these too. Oh, and this. (Don’t worry, it only lasts 28 shampoos and will make your hair shiny and lovely.) And one more product, I swear!

(I know this seems like a lot, but these things will last you for a very long time. Plus, it all costs under $40.)

3. Go to your stylist and get 4 inches cut off your hair.

4. For days when you are running out the door, wash your hair, towel-dry, and make an even part on the top of your head with a comb. (It can be a side part or a center part, whatever.) De-tangle with the wide-tooth comb. Spray Dream Curls throughout your hair and let air dry.

5. For days when you have more time, wash, towel-dry, and blow dry with your round brush for a smoother look.

We’re going for a smooth and wavy look, like this:

Alright, Marya. We’re counting on you. Get your tush to the store and make us proud!

  1. loving Vol. 2.10! Can’t wait to see BOTH updates!

  2. Poor Marya looks frightened in her pic. Never fear, Whoorl is here!

Can’t wait to see the updates. Melissa will look totally adorable with the short cut.

  3. It’s a good thing my husband can only vote once, or else there would already be 1000 votes for #1. He is so excited that Whoorl agrees with him that short hair looks better on me. I’m never going to hear the end of this… heh. :P As for me, I love both options, and I’m interested to see which one wins!

I’m really more excited for Marya than myself, though… her hair is going to be gorgeous!! Can’t wait to see her update!

    Thanks, Whoorl. :)

  4. Ohh, I so agree with you on Marya’s predicament. That John Frieda stuff is going to do her some serious good, as well as the Infusium.

Am I the only one who loooooves the smell of Infusium 23? Okay, then…moving on.

  5. i def voted for the short hair on number one. oooh! it seems like i always comment about accenting the cheekbones but it’s true. everyone has such lovely cheekbones!

melissa, could you rock the wavy with short hair? b/c i think that would be HOT.

and i totally second whoorl on the frizz ease – even though i dont’ have curly hair, i use the regular one and a nice plus is that it makes my uber thick hair dry so much faster. it cuts it down literally to no time at all to dry.

  6. 1. Whoorl you are BRILLIANT! These suggestions today are totally on spot!
    2. Melissa, you are GORGEOUS and any man who is pro-short hair should be “thanked” in as many creative ways you can think *ahem*
    3. Mayra, this make-over is gonna change your life!!!

I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited for updates in a long time ;-)

  7. Why can’t I find a conditioner for curly hair that doesn’t have alcohol in it? My hair does not like the alcohol, even the “alcohol free” one my MIL bought has alcohol as the third ingredient.

BTW, do we get to know when the paper is going to out?

I know it’s going to be in the Thursday Style section, possibly next Thursday, but it could be in two weeks. I’ll definitely let you know when it comes out.

  8. I’m excited about Mayra, yes I am!
Why did Mena Suvari cutt off all her hair? It was so pretty!

  9. Melissa will look fantastic regardless of the option she picks. But I,too, hope she goes for Option 1.

Go, Marya! Cannot wait to see the magic that is bound to happen with Whoorl’s action plan.

Shopping for a shampoo has been a pet peeve of mine so I am running out to pick up Infusium 23 STAT! (The fact that it smells good, at least according to Jamie, will be icing on the cake.)

  10. Ooh, fantastic! I am going for the shorter version for Melissa so that I can live vicariously through her edgy hair.

I can’t wait to see how you fare with the new products and shorter length, Marya! You can do it!

  11. Can’t wait to see the updates for these two gals. Also, am I the only person whose hair gets completely full of static if I use a boar bristle brush? I tried one years ago, and then a again after reading whoorl’s recommendation, but damn! I look like I stuck my finger in the light socket.

  12. I have hair a bit like Marya’s and a LOT of it. I have one suggestion that has saved my life when blowing it out – A HUGE ceramic brush (plus a ceramic/ionic hair dryer) has cut my drying time down to 10 mins, which is a world record! Plus, you get a bicep workout in the process! Here is the brush: http://www.metrobeauty.com/brushes/Round-Brushes/Cricket-Tsunami-Jumbo-Thermal-Vent.html

  13. I’m surprised you suggested a brush for Marya.

I was thinking ACK! No! A pick is all you need and your hair will curl right up!!

    And? no heat styling required!

The brush is only for the the smooth look (#5 on her action plan), not her day-to-day look.

  14. I can’t wait to see what Marya comes up with.

Okay, so how will Marya use the round brush to get the Julia Roberts look? I have naturally wavy hair, but all I do is defuse it. I’m dying to know how to use a round brush for something other then to straighten my hair. Seriously, teach us Whoorl.

(Also, going to get that John Frieda frizz-ease today at lunch. Thanks for the suggestion.)

  15. John Frieda’s Dream Curls does work wonders! It has been the staple of my day-to-day look for the last few years. Marya’s hair will look fabulous if she follows your instructions. The only thing is that Dream Curls is a “spritz all over and then scrunch with your fingers” sort of product, as opposed to a “dollop” sort of product a la Aveda’s Be Curly. I’ve found that John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease + Dream Curls is a great combination for days when I’m running out the door, but still need a little something dollop-y to get my hair to behave.

  16. I find that if there is voting involved i always vote for the hair style that I wish i had the hair (and bravery) for!…

The Ladies will be loooking good!

  17. LOVE that curl spray. I was totally going to comment and say what fairydogmother did. It’s a spray. No dollops. ;-)

I personally found my bliss with Pantene’s mousse and John Frieda’s curl spray.

Can’t wait to see you beautiful girls!!

Oh! Thank both of you for pointing that out! I originally had written “a dollop of Be Curly”, but then decided to use a less expensive option. Changing it right now…

  18. I can’t wait! to hear how the photo shoot/interview/etc. went. And your hair suggestions, as always, are great. I especially love the part where I get to toss in my measly two cents. I’m a sucker for voting.

(Also: I totally understand you have to do what’s best for you, but I miss you on Twitter. Just saying.) : )

  19. Marya is going to look so awesome! I can’t wait to see!

Melissa’s hair will look super cute. I hope #1 wins!
