This week’s participant is Heather.

Heather’s hair:

Naturally light golden brown
Doesn’t color
Extremely fine, dry
Spends 2 minutes styling per day
Uses no products or tools
Layers make hair limp

Heather’s hair is super duper fine, which makes it a little lifeless and very prone to flyaways. She’s tried layering in the past, but her hair is so fine that the layers don’t help in the volume department.

What we need to do today is focus on the positives. Heather’s hair would be fabulous with a blunt, shaped-up bob. (Anything longer than shoulder-length would look stringy.) The addition of color and a couple of products will help pump up her overall look as well.

I’m sorry, but there will be no options today because this look is simply perfect for Heather!

Hayden Panettiere’s chin length bob has softly curved ends and tons of shine, and the blond highlights would brighten Heather’s face like no other! Seriously VA VA VOOM. Now, if this is too much of a color change, some darker blond highlights would be lovely too.

Now, let’s talk products for Heather.

Have you heard of Bumble and bumble’s Thickening Line? (Bumble and bumble products two days in a row? Wow. They shoot, they score!) Heather, this super popular product line was made for you. Here’s the deal, though. If you can only buy one product, buy Bumble and bumble’s new Thickening Serum.

thick

This is EXACTLY what all of you super fine gals need. As a treatment, the serum actually penetrates individual hair strands to increase their diameter over time (yes, really. FULLER HAIR.), while it strengthens and fortifies them. Obviously, when individual strands are thicker, they’re less prone to breakage and the dreaded flyaways. All you need is 2-3 pumps of the serum before bed, work it into roots and through damp or dry hair, and let it work its magic overnight.

Girls, run, don’t walk. I’ve heard nothing but incredible things about this product. In fact, if my hair wasn’t of the naturally bouffant variety, I would scoop that serum up in a second.

I’m curious, though. What’s your favorite type of styling product for fine hair?

UPDATED TO ADD: I can’t believe I failed to mention Redken Rootful 06 Root Lifting Spray. It is a perfect product for creating lift and volume in fine hair.

  1. Ok, what about us wavy colored supah fine haired girls? Similar advice???

Yesterday’s post would probably be more fitting for you. :)

  2. Pureology Pure Volume Blow Dry Amplifying Gel. By far the best product I’ve used on my very fine/limp hair. I don’t use it every day, though. It seems to work better if I use it every other day.

  3. For giving my fine hair a bit of texture and hold without making it stiff, I love Bed Head’s Cocky Thickening Paste.

  4. I would just like to point out that Heather is a dead ringer for Claire Danes and that Claire had a short hair phase, of which many of the cuts would probably also be suitable for Heather. <a href=http://www.clairedanes.com/photos/mod16.jpg

  5. I feel like I’ve used every volumizing product on the market: Redken’s Fat Cat Body Booster, Matrix’s Amplify, Got 2b Styltini Double Shot 24hr Hair Thickener…etc. Each was good, but none were perfect.

I second the Pureology Volume Blow Dry Amplifier: this stuff is the bomb. It makes my hair (which has a texture similar to Heather’s) bouncy and full without feeling sticky, crispy, or tacky in anyway. (I’ve used the Volumizing shampoo/conditioner too. It’s good, but I love the scent of the Hydrating formula so tend to reach for that first.)

A small travel sized bottle isn’t cheap, but it’s lasted me and my collarbone length hair for a couple of months. Well worth the price (around 7 or 8 bucks). But I will run out for the Bb product to give it a whirl when my Pureology runs dry.

  6. I have super fine hair like Heather. It’s also naturally super straight. One trick I’ve learnt is to blow dry hair upside down. I do it straight out of the shower and blowdry until absolutely dry all over. Then I use some (really lightweight) serum to smooth down any fuzzies and I’m good to go. It really helps with pancake flat hair.

  7. Heather has the same hair like mine, only difference is that mine is natural blonde and longer, so thanks for the advices although the haircut of Hayden Panettiere is not the right one for me. The hair being so thin, will look even less then it is now, I tried this haircut years ago, was not good.

  8. I like the Pureology stuff too. Also, for an on-the-cheap solution, that “Luxurious Volume” line by John Frieda is not bad. I tried the mousse and the spray-on root lifter and liked them both. The only thing I’d stay away from is the Matrix Amplify stuff. I tried it several years ago and found it dried my hair and scalp out pretty badly.

Of course, now that I’ve gone back to my pixie, I don’t need to worry about volume anymore. ;-)

I have had good luck with ginger lily farms Kahili brand. I got it at my local salon and found that it helped to add volume and keep my hair looking healthy and shiny

    Hope that helps

Ever since I was a little kid I have suffered with fine hair. I really hate it. It is hard for me to hold a curl and mousse does not really make a difference, but a good shampoo can make that difference. I found that with the Volume products from Shielo Haircare.

I initially liked Shielos Volume Shampoo because it smells absolutely wonderful! Then I saw the price and I was sold.

That is when I get the best results. I have tried other shampoos that are comparable to this one and they do not add up. I can honestly tell a difference with this shampoo. It is also great for little kids. Sometimes when I am out of my daughters shampoo I let her use this. Although it is not tear free it is four year old friendly. I will continue to purchase this in the future and would suggest it to others.
