Meet Cayce.

cayce_before

Cayce’s hair:

Light brown with a few warm blond highlights
Thick
Dry condition
Only washes 2-3x per week
Consistently uses a flat iron
Enjoying the longer length and option of a ponytail, although not opposed to short
Spends 35 minutes styling on wash days, otherwise 5 minutes
Uses Nexxus Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner and Pureology Straightening Serum

Cayce is a doll, isn’t she? She’s one of those lucky gals that can carry off many lengths with her face shape and hair texture.

From Cayce’s email:

The longer length is me today. The shorter length is from about 15 months ago. I have 4 kids 5 and under so I don’t want to be running to the salon every 6 weeks for highlights but I’m willing to keep up a cut if the shape is good. I LOVE the short cute bob hair but my tends to poof. I’m so ready to find a style that is “me” and stick with it.

Excuse me? FOUR KIDS aged 5 and under? I guess I need to quit whining about my ONE toddler who is driving me batty. Kudos to you, Cayce!

First off, I think Cayce’s color looks very nice with her complexion. I love the warm, golden highlights and don’t see the need to change since she doesn’t want to deal with extra upkeep. However, the one feature I keep focusing on is Cayce’s beautiful bone structure. Let’s take a look at the two options I chose to complement that structure.

Option #1 – What a way to frame Cayce’s lovely face. Just grazing where the neck meets the top of the shoulder, Cayce could achieve this look by asking her stylist to cut a shoulder-length bob with texturizing throughout, which will remove most of the bulk and keep it relatively flat to the head. Also, the trick to keeping poof to a minimum is to flat iron the ends of the hair. As you are working down the hair shaft, give an extra squeeze towards the ends to eliminate any natural curl and/or volume. Plus, since Cayce only washes a few times per week, sleeping on this style will actually eliminate any residual poof!

Option #2 – Keeping the length, but adding sideswept bangs and more layering to accentuate Cayce’s eyes and cheekbones. This style would be very versatile for Cayce’s demanding lifestyle. She could wear it straight or use her beloved flat iron to create waves. (Yes, you can create waves with a flat iron!) On days that Cayce needs to wear a ponytail, the bangs will keep her ponytail looking stylish and chic, like so:

Decisions, decisions. I think Cayce would look darling with either of these hairstyles. Tell Cayce what you think!

    Hey Cayce…
First off, I think your hair has lovely sheen to it, really looks nice and polished. I do wonder if you are using a straightening iron, if it is because you have slight wave to your hair or if your hair is straight but you like really stick straight hair. I have naturally wavy hair and a kind of “no flat iron gotta happen in 10 minutes” hair policy. I am a firm believer in using a boars hair medium girth round brush to keep the ends clean when opting for straighter do’s. What is your natural no product wake up in the morning hair like?
I think layers with some side sweep or a fringe could be great because then it can be worn straight with an iron or left alone to naturally dry and you spend like 2 minutes doing your fringe. I think its great to throw some product in when you get out of the shower and let the air do its bit…If time is an issue then its best to work with the natural “will” of your hair.
I’d keep most the length and chop maybe 2-3 inches, then some sweeping layers around the chin.
(i hope i haven’t been too wordy, im just a hair nut!) Hope that helps.

  3. Cayce’s hair is BEAUTIFUL, and she is gorgeous. 4 kids under 5 – as Whoorl said, brings perspective into MY day for sure. :)

I really like the long style on you, although you definitely can pull off both long and short! I also agree that the color is great with your skin tone!

On another note: I WISH I could get away with washing only 2-3x a week! If I don’t wash every day (sometimes I can get away with every other day), my hair sticks to my head!

    Good luck!

  4. This is EXACTLY the dilema I am struggling with right now: chin length bob (easy and classic) or longer, “Whoorl” hair, if you will.

Cayce is stunning either way, but I am totally voting for the longer hair with side-swept bangs. Versatile and va-va-voom!

  5. can we vote cayce into the fishing world? jk. she has such lovely hair! we all know that i’m an advocate of the bang for accentuating the bone structure. this could be stunning here. so i voted #2!

  6. Hey guys! You all are too sweet. This is the most excitement this stay-at-home mom has had in a while!!

I really think I’m leaning towards #2 with the bangs…..the beautiful ladies in my family have a long history of “generous” foreheads so bangs are something I’ve contemplated for a while. I do like #1 and with the right texturizing I think I could love it, too!

lorelle, my hair has a frizzy wave when air dried. How I wish I could put some product in it (or maybe I just haven’t found the right product!) and let it go. I even got a (shhhhhh!) perm several years ago in hopes to wear it more natural. Since I only wash it 2-3x per week my “fixed” slept on hair is wonderful. My wash-at-night-and-do-nothing hair is horrendous. Really, it’s horrendous. I can send proof if necessary.

Thanks for your input. I welcome any more thoughts or suggestions you may have!

  7. I like the longer look with the layers and the bangs, but I am not so sure bangs are right for Cayce. I have long sideswept bangs and I H-A-T-E them. They rarely turn out like the lovely celebrities pictured and they hang in my eyes. Not to mention they go everywhere in the slightest breeze. IF styled correctly they can look great, but it’s very hit or miss for mine.

I worry that the maintenance required for great looking bangs is too much for someone with limited time to spend on their hair.

  8. I voted long. She has beeeautiful hair. I think the longer hair makes her look youthful. I bet waves would be just darling.

  9. The bob is nice, but Cayce’s been there, done that. It was cute, but let’s try something new – mix it up! The banged, layered, hottie hair is absolutely the right choice here. Can’t wait to see the update!

  10. I am watching you on RR now!!! Congrats! I love this idea!

And, I agree that Cayce can pull off any style/length! But, I think the first one would look so cute on her. However, as a mom a shorter length isn’t always functional when you try to exercise and chase after kids. Either one would look fab though!

I have to say that the short hair makes her look so much younger (20′s). I think the long hair makes her look older (40′s). That is my 2 cents.

  13. Hmm, in response to the commenter above me – I actually thought Cayce looked VERY young with the longer hair – like teenager young. I was shocked to hear she has 4 kids!

My vote is for style #2, while I think both cuts would look good, the first cut is very similar to my current style, and for me it’s more work than my long hair. I find that I HAVE to style, air-drying to wavy isn’t an option.

And great job on Rachel today, Whoorl!

    Cayce,

You are blessed; beautiful, married, 4 kids and on top of all that you look Mahvelous my dear! I think your face shape is great and it’s best reflected by framing it with the shorter hair. I have long, springy, curly hair which I straight iron. Like you I go 3-4 days between washings. (In the ‘old days’, ’70′s, we washed our hair weekly!) I am going to suggest that you try it natural on the ‘off days’ when you are at home. I use a spray on, leave-in conditioner and a no-frizz oil when it’s wet. I air dry it, only combing it when it’s wet. I wear a hair band to keep it in control and styled. I bet you would look good with your natural hair also! It’s another option to be cute and have an easy hair day w/o all that straight ironing. Try it and upload a photo so we can see you. I bet you look amazing with natural hair if you’d just use the right products (no frizz oil and spray on conditioner after you towel dry) So many people make that mistake by thinking that salon products are expensive and a sales pitch but they’re great when you use them for the ‘natural hair’ days!
I wish you the best. You are brave and beautiful…God bless,
    Tracy

  15. Tracy-
Thank you for your kind words. I am so thankful for the blessings in my life-namely my great huz and my awesome kids. Life is challenging but nothing worth something is easy, right??

I would love to find the right combo of products to wear it natural and wavy….I just haven’t yet. It looks good when it’s wet but as it dries it gets frizzy and really poofy. When I must, I let it air dry, pull the top back in a bobby pin and then do a pony. I’d love specific recommendations of products if you have some. Thanks again.

PS-I’m REALLY leaning towards getting bangs but a little nervous. I don’t want the “forehead chopped in half” look and I’m worried about them splitting down the middle. I love the bangs in the photo(s) Sarah selected and something the lines of Jennifer Garner……

  16. I think the bangs would look killer on Cayce! Also the problem with the G Paltrow look is that the hair could fall easily into your face (not practical with 4 kids etc).
