Figuring Things Out

Let’s pretend you are a therapist. I’m sitting down on the couch now.

I’m toying with the idea of consolidating back to one blog. Freelance work is hopping, the kiddos’ activities are increasing every month, and I just feel like running both Whoorl and Hair Thursday is too much. I’d love to be able to focus all of my efforts on one blog, you know?

Plus, writing about hair on an almost DAILY basis at Hair Thursday has become, well, harried. Sure, I still want to share hair inspiration or a product review or a makeover post, but why can’t I just do that here at whoorl? Remember the good ol’ days? MEMORIEEES, LIGHT THE CORNERS OF MY MIIIIIND)

Hmmm, maybe I’m just having a moment. Who knows. Do you have any thoughts on the matter?

  1. Bring it back over here, and make it an occasional feature for when you feel like it. In the grand scheme of things, feeling obligated to an effort you no longer care about is a waste of everything, and doubly so when it’s an online effort.

  2. Sounds like you already know what you need to do…

Whatever you decide, have NO guilt about your decision! You’re fabulous no matter what. :)

  3. I always say blogging shouldn’t cause you stress or guilt. I like Sarah Brown’s idea of making it an occasional feature. You should focus on whatever makes you happy, lady!

  4. I agree with Sarah! (Leave the other site up for people to browse through for inspiration.)

  5. Could you take a long vacation from it for awhile? Maybe instead of Hair Thursday make it Hair August?

  6. I agree with Steph, it sounds like you already know what your path should be. They say to follow your bliss; so if hair isn’t your bliss anymore then you do need a new path to follow. You don’t need anyone’s permission but your own. Best of luck.

  7. The thing I miss about Hair Thursday is the reader makeovers, and it would be fun to see them happen every once in awhile here (if you want to do them). But it is important to go with your passions, and if you aren’t excited about hair right now don’t do it!

  8. Hmm what if you did it once a month? Or brought other contributing writers/editors in? I love me some Hair Thursday but I also love reading Whoorl.

  9. Don’t feel any guilt if you want to move along! You always have to do what’s best for you and your family! Plus, I confess that I do not visit Hair Thursday regularly but I do love reading about things here at Whoorl.

  11. Pretty sure Sarah Brown said it best.
Make it an cccassional feature here, when the mood strikes.

The great thing about blogging, as a business, means you have a very easy exit strategy. Simply stop. No conclusion, no farewell, no “see you soon.”

The only thing preventing people from doing that is themselves. Odds are many won’t notice, or care enough to comment. They read so many blogs they’ll move on. The few that do miss you? They’ll seek you out and you can write to them individually. But only if you want.

Good hair means never having to feel guilty. Or say sorry.

    just another Sarah

p.s. If it weren’t for you, I’d have never discovered the magic of Glossing Creme and for that? There aren’t thanks enough, really.

  12. back! back! you are fabulous and have so much to offer – parenthood, exercise, design, fashion etc etc. I love and have for 6 years now!

  15. I’m with that second Sarah commenter. Don’t feel guilty if you don’t feel like doing it anymore!

I’m also with Martha – I thought Hair Thursday started as an overflow from the reader makeover suggestions…? I do miss seeing those, but I can imagine finding inspiration for them in photo-form would be a lot of work/time…

  16. Is it crazy to think of it as a brand that could be sold? I bet there’s someone who does like to write about hair who would be happy to take it over with the attention that it’s gotten so far, and you could keep the ability to write on it occasionally. I’m thinking of what Maggie Mason did with, for one. That way it’s not yours to manage, but it doesn’t take away from the value that you’ve built for that brand.

Just throwing it out there – I don’t have a lot of business experience and haven’t ever made the effort to make anything of my own social media presence, but in my mind I’m an internet superstar.

  17. I remember the good old days. And I miss those Thursday make over posts! One thing Mr. Darcy and I recently realized is that bigger isn’t necessarily better (his gig at a very big video game company that went belly up). I say do what you love and focus on that!

All thing in life eb and flow. Thing start and end. If it’s run it’s course, let it. Don’t keep doing it past when you enjoy it. Life it too short. Do what you love to do when you can. If you don’t feel like hair anymore, ditch it. follow your gut and your heart.

  21. I have to chime in to missing the reader makeovers, too. Those were great. I’d love it if you brought them back here! But you get to do whatever feels least stressful. I have absolutely zero business sense either, but hey, if you don’t love it AND you could sell it, like mjb mentioned? I think that’s a great plan.

Delurking here to say I agree with others above that I thought the best part of HT were the reader makeovers. I’ve recently stopped checking HT since those were in short supply lately.

I can TOTALLY understand that you are busy with other things (hooray, you!), and think mjb’s suggestion of selling it as a commodity to another interested, invested person/people would be a great idea. You could also farm out some/most/all of the blog posts by taking on contributors, as others have suggested above.

In any case, it’s yours to do with as you will! I certainly won’t stop reading here if HT goes defunct. Congrats on all your successful-busyness!

  23. I support you. Also might you consider selling it for a profit???

I don’t know, it might make you feel funny, BUT you’ve worked hard to create that brand, and I personally think you deserve some profit from it.

(After typing this, I just noticed that someone else has already suggested this.)

  24. I can see your point. Here is my advice:

Why not try and find a protege for Hair Thursday via a blog contest? Find someone new and fresh with a passion for talking about hair to replace you. This new someone would take over your position and Hair Thursday would be theirs. It would totally rock someones socks off!

Just keep Hair Thursday up as a resource since you’ve done such a great job of compiling all the information. I go back all the time and search different topics. But I’d way rather read about your adorable family. :)

Sounds like you’re getting a lot of great advice. After doing my taxes this season for my Pampered Chef business and knowing that a baby was on the way – I decided to give it up. It was bitter sweet but without regret. Now I have time to comment on blogs again! Like a couple others mentioned, I like the idea of just posting ideas/experiences/makeovers here when inspiration hits.

  32. Sonja von Franck says:

I just clicked on the “good ole days” link you inserted. HA! That was the VERY FIRST personal blog I EVER read! Funny that that’s how I “met you”. I remember thinking at the time, “Wito huh? People in California give their kids crazy names!”

  33. Moriyah says:

I enjoy Hair Thursday, especially the product recommendations and tutorials (found Macadamia Oil and Fekkai Glossing cream through you- thanks!), but I agree with others who miss the makeovers. That was my favorite part. I would prefer to read you here if you are only going to keep up with one site. You could occasionally do a hair post here if you have something interesting you’d like to share. I say, let it go! I DO enjoy reading your writing- perhaps you’d share some of your freelance work??

  34. I think bringing the best of Hair Thursday over here would be great – you can include those things to whatever extent seems natural to you without doing it because you have to.

I also kind of like the idea of handing over Hair Thursday to someone else. That wouldn’t preclude you from showcasing the things you love or hair tutorials over here, I wouldn’t think.

I say go with your gut. I really do enjoy reading about products and seeing people’s new hair styles. Maybe it’s a once a week or once every two weeks kind of thing. Your hair is very similar is color and texture to mine so I enjoy reading what you use on and do to your hair. :)

  40. I have always loved whoorl the most. Hair Thursday’s been fun, too. Sprinkling hair posts into your whoorl posts would just be dreamy.

The thing I like about Hair Thursday is learning about new products, techniques, etc. I feel like it keeps me from getting old or set in my ways. I would miss that, but either way your blogs are fun to read!

  42. If your heart isn’t in it, it isn’t in it. I taught myself how to curl my hair from that tutorial and it works well for me and doesn’t take forever! I am very glad you shared that as the idea of a curling iron scared me shitless. But bottom line you need to do what makes you happy.

  43. Linette says:

Agree with previous comments that Hair Thursday just hasn’t been the same without the regular makeovers. Would love to see an occasional hair makeover on Whoorl, along with the other product reviews and the like. Things and people change…don’t feel bad about it…life’s too short to do things you don’t have passion for.

  44. I also like Whoorl the best!

  45. I say if you’re done with it, if it’s become more WORK and almost no fun, if your life is otherwise busy and fulfilling, then be done with it. Write about hair, if you ever feel the need, over here.

I stumbled upon your blog last year and I have to say, you got me hooked once again on Sephora. After reading your posts I would say, “OMG I NEED THAT _______ FROM SEPHORA IMMEDIATELY!! I WILL DIE IF I DON’T HAVE THAT!” And then your tutorials on hair products – I basically pull up your site when shopping. Just wanted to put that out there so you know you’ve made a difference in my hair life. And you’ve done it a natural way that comes off so pure and genuine – you don’t give off that “I’m better than you vibe which I get from other sites. (I don’t think they do it on purpose, I just don’t think they realize).

Anyhoo – I read from earlier comments about selling the site. Ok, maybe. Is there anyone you know that could take it over?

I really miss the reader makeovers, those were my favorite part of Hair Thursday. (PS – I turned in my photo like 3 years ago now. My horrid mulletesque bad haircut has grown out and is now halfway down my back.)

  57. I think bringing it back over here is a great idea. Plus, I sort of miss actual Hair Thursdays… Maybe if you did it once a month – like Hair Second Tuesday or something?

I say wrap it back up, move it on back to a Thursday piece… It was fun back then :)

  59. I love Whoorl so much more than Hair Thursday (I have a pixie, and it just makes me jealous!) but I did FIND Whoorl via HT (hunting cute pixie-do’s), so I think you should keep it up and cross post, but only when you feel like it, so new people can find you :)
