Hi! I’m a Cripple!

35

Leaving the OB’s office this morning, I somehow tweaked my lower back while climbing into the car. (1 cm dilated, 50% effaced!)

I then proceeded to go grocery shopping. Because I’m smart.

When the Very Helpful Grocery Bagger asked me eleventy billion times if I would like assistance to my car, I declined over and over again. Because I’m smart.

As you can guess, I aggravated my back somethin’ FIERCE while loading my car with said groceries. My back is not happy and I pretty much can’t move.

Since mainlining painkillers (or even Ibuprofen) isn’t in the cards for me, any sage advice for lower back pain relief?

Oh and guess what? I’m 9 months pregnant!

(Taken this past weekend or as I like to call it, the Pre-Crippled Days. Oh, to stand without wincing….)

  1. I would like to know the answer to this as well, since I hurt my back yesterday too. Picking up a TV.

Also, you’re the cutest pregnant person ever!

  2. I tweaked my back really badly about 2 weeks after Dylan was born and the only thing that helped was wearing — I am not making this up — a giant stupid weightlifter’s belt. So for you, maybe a maternity support belt? Along with ice and rest and Haagen Dazs, of course.

  3. lay in bed until the kid comes. not the assvice you are looking for….

    though, you look wonderful!

  4. They have those chinese herb patches that feel soothing. I love those things! Those might help?

  5. Heating pad?

  6. Being this cute whilst pregnant should not be allowed. Either that or it should happen for everyone. Amen?

  7. Find a chiropractor who is comfortable with working with pregnant women.

  8. They make these wonderful heat patches~have your DH find them at any drugstore. They are lovely! Or an old fashioned hot water bottle.
Add ice cream and magazines and start/continue counting the days!
    You are adorable!!

  9. You don’t suppose that the back pain is actually labor pains? When I had my son all my labor pains where in my back, like a backache. I hope some rest helps relieve the ache.

  10. A. You look gorgeous. B. That doesn’t help your back.
    C. I don’t mean to sound like a wack-a-tootie, but do you have an acupuncturist down there in OC? Mine’s in Santa Monica which I am certain you are not feeling like driving to with the aching back.

Seriously, if you know anyone who knows a good one in Newport, it will do you a world of good. Sans drugs. xo – hope you feel better soon.

  11. I agree with the commenter who suggested a chiropractor who is comfortable with pregnant women. Mine is a woman who has had 4 kids herself, and she is fantastic. A bit of commute for you to WI though :)

And seriously, you can’t possibly have gained much weight so far. You would NEVER guess you are 9 months along. You look great!

  12. Acupuncture. I fell and bruised the hell out of my tailbone. My general practitioner told me 1600 mg of Advil a day and at least 3 to 6 months to heal. Hell no to that. My sweet mother in law took me to an acupuncturist. After 30 minutes of treatment, my pain was totally gone.

  13. After years and years of off an on back pain, I finally hit the big one Sunday morning on my way out the door to be a bridesmaid. Dammit.

I come from a family of bad backs and these are our tricks – if you think it’s a bulging disc irritating the nerve, you need to ice the painful area rather than apply heat. If it’s strictly a tight muscle, use the heat.

Either lie flat on your back with your knees bent or with a pillow underneath your knees or on your side with your knees bent. Do that as much as possible (I’m sure that’s an easy feat in your house). Unfortunately, rest seems to be the only thing helping mine – headed for an MRI in the morning.

  14. Chiropractor! I just got back from an apt as I did something to my cocyx and lower back and feel a lot better.

  15. I have no advice but I do have good vibes to send your way. And how funny is the phrase “wack-a-tootie?”

  16. The chiropractor always tells my husband to lay down with his knees elevated. Obviously you can’t lay flat, but you can lay semi-reclined with your knees propped on some pillows. Might help a little? And, uh, call a chiropractor. We have one we like in Irvine, if you need a referral.

  17. Danielle (elleinadspir) says:

You could um…’help labor along’ with some home remedies. The back pain will clearly get worse…but then the baby will be here and pain killers ;) so….that’s one option.

  18. Michele says:

I had HUGE issues after I had my daughter. I went to the chiropractor, massage therapist and hoped and prayed…and nothing worked. I was nursing, so I avoided medicine. I found a OMT, and it worked! It was amazing! It’s like a blend of physical therapy and massage therapy. If nothing else works…try it out! http://www.osteopathic.org/index.cfm?PageID=ost_omt

  19. Hi! You’re adorable!

Nothing new, but it still needed to be said.

  21. This book! Seriously!

    http://www.amazon.com/Healing-Back-Pain-Mind-Body-Connection/dp/0446392308

Everyone I know who’s read it swears by it. And you can get it for a penny on Amazon.

  22. I agree with the poster above who commented about laying flat on the floor with your knees raised to hip level and bent, with your calvesresting on something (the couch, your bed, a tall stack of pillows). My lower back was a mess by the end of my pregnancy, and laying relaxed in this position for about 10-20 minutes at a time helped. And a warm bath, too.

You look gorgeous, might I add. I hope when I get pregnant with my second I can look as fabulous as you. Something tells me it won’t happen.

  23. Had major back pain with my third… I would highly recommend a massage (find a massage therapist who is familiar with / trained in pregnancy massages). Immediate relief… it saved my life!

  24. Hmm I’d say do some light stretching or yoga breathing exercises, get acquainted with a heating pad, and see if you can get a massage. Feel better soon!

  25. Chiropractor! I had never been to one before my pregnancy with my 2nd child. I did PT and saw the chiropractor at the same time, but I swear it was the chiropractor that helped. Also, you will get to lay on your stomach for the first time in months as they have a big cutout pillow!

  26. I had the same thing when I was pregnant. Actually had to go to ER at one point…so, fun. Anyway, I went to a chiropractor who specializes in treating pregnant women and I also had acupuncture. Mind you, before being pregnant, I thought these things were a little wacky but they really worked. Plus I took a nice warm LONG bath every night with a tiny glass of red wine. (no judging, doctor said I could).
Good luck, I hope you feel better and you do look fab.
    Best,
    Tina

  27. Warm bath? Back rub?

  28. When my hips get off-kilter it kills my lower back. Try these exercises. http://totalhealthyoga.blogspot.com/2007/06/sacrum-si-how-to-help-with-low-back.html Also, lie on your bakc with knees bent and lift the pelvis. Along with the above exercises it really helps me within an hour or two. It’s worth a shot!

  29. you may not like this….. but an ice pack helps.

  33. I have always had a bad back, esp. thru my 3 pregnancies. I was always told that ice was better than heat…visit the chiro, and do lots of stretching/exercises specific to the back. I think that as our abs get weaker throughout pregnancy, the core gets weaker which can cause the back to easily fly out of joint. Hopefully a quick visit to the chiro will ease your pain.
    And you look great btw!!

  34. You’re 9 months HOTTIE!

  35. Chinese herbs do work because it is time tested.:’~
