Who Needs Baby Gear When You Possess These Treasures?

29

Well, you guys are just full of great insight these days. (And D would like to thank the 12% of you who had his back on the marriage poll. heh) A huge thanks for all of the great advice last week regarding Wita’s sleeping arrangements for the first couple of months. Not only did you help me to make a purchase, but you actually changed my mind. (Which is next to impossible. Truly.) To be honest, I was all but french kissing the Cariboo Bassinet at the time I wrote that post. I was 98% sold on the product, regardless of cost, but figured I would post about my dilemma just for the hell of it.

BUT YOU CHANGED MY MIND, FOLKS. AND SAVED ME MONEY. (Love you, kiss kiss!)

However, we will return to that subject shortly.

This past weekend was spent cleaning and arranging our garage to make room for both of our cars. In the past, D (aka the “Mid Century Modern Hoarder“) has housed many of his goodies in the garage, thus leaving room for only one vehicle. This has secretly driven me batty, for I can’t stand clutter, stacks, or any shit lying around that is not being actively used.

Within days of moving to our new neighborhood, we found out that our Homeowners Association will not allow vehicles on the street. The only way you can keep a car in the street permanently is if you own three cars, at which point you must actually PHOTOGRAPH two cars in the garage before requesting a permit. Naturally, this news was rather disappointing to D, but for me? IT WAS THE BEST NEWS OF MY LIFE. D was being forced to clean out his “treasures!” HAHAHAHAA HALLELUJAH.

Although D had to do most of the rearranging and cleaning, don’t think for a second that I didn’t sit out there watching him like a hawk the entire time. “Are you trying to hide that box of CDs from 1991?”, “Do you really need 49 wooden frames?” and “Do you envision yourself actively using that 8-foot-long wooden Hungarian spatula in the immediate future?” were common questions coming out of my mouth over the course of the past 48 hours.

However! It got me thinking. Who needs a bunch of new baby gear when I can use some of D’s treasures instead?

Take this lovely basket.

Forget using a Bjorn, wrap or ring sling…just pop your tiny infant into this bad boy and call it a day!

Ooooh, so comfortable. Don’t worry if your newborn starts crying while stuffed in there, those are just tears of joy.

Got an early 20th century dough bowl lying around the house? Hell, WHO DOESN’T?

Helloooo! Perfect baby bed! Concerned about splinters? Just throw some bubble wrap in there and you’re good to go.

Look at the happiness exuding from Louise the Chicken! She loves her new baby bed!

As much as the dough bowl baby bed warmed my heart, I did end up buying the Arms Reach Mini Co-Sleeper due to some incredibly convincing comments and emails from you all. And once again, this purchase truly confirms what I’ve known all along. A parental tagline of sorts…

BABY GEAR: SOMETIMES THE FUGLY OPTION IS THE BETTER CHOICE.

I’m dealing with it.

  1. The basket was already making me laugh, and then I scrolled down to see you wearing it! Hysterical!
Take comfort in knowing that at least your husband hoards cool stuff, while mine is attached to such nonsense as high school t-shirts and random, childhood mismatched dinnerware. That box of CD’s from the 90’s? Mmm-hmm, got one of those too.

  2. I envy your homeowner’s association!! We have a 3 car garage with exactly ZERO cars parked in it, which means I get to shovel and scrape massive amounts of snow and ice off my car every morning in the winter…yay

  3. We’ve got a super fugly bassinet that I bought on craigslist after Lu was born. Charlie had not wanted anything to do with any sort of sleeping device other than our arms so we were hesitant to spend too much money on one in case Lu didn’t like it either. I lusted after the Caribou for weeks, but ultimately decided that even if I have another kid, it didn’t make sense to spend that much on something I planned on using for such a short period of time. Trust me, the Arms Reach is much better looking that what we’ve got.

What I wouldn’t give for someone to tell us we HAD to park in our garage, it is the only way I could get rid of the junk in our garage. Trust me, those 9 months of rain we’ve got here in Seattle leave me dreaming of parking in the garage and whisking the kids into the house without getting soaked.

  4. Hilarious!

  5. So where are the mid century goodies going?!

If they are being donated, please let me know the name of the store so I can “just happen to be in the neighborhood”!!

That Cariboo Bassinet? I don’t have children but every time I see it, I consider whoring myself out just to get pregnant just so I can put a baby in it!!

With each of my sister’s new babies, I try to convince her to get it. She suggested that since I wanted it so badly I should just go buy one of those creepy real looking baby dolls and then buy the bassinet and happily live the rest of my life in crazy land!!!

  7. I’m not a normal commenter, but I think that’s the best parenting tagline I’ve ever read/heard/seen!

  8. HILARIOUS! Annnnnd….I really want that bowl! LOL! I second the opinion about hoarding cool stuff. The stack of 5 years worth of car magazines? NOT really helpful.

  9. Me. I need the dough bowl. Must have dough bowl!

  10. i will say it isn’t that ugly. i will remind you, which only proves your point with a cap P is you had a swing. i never got one and so wished i had! it is all so temp anyway. you guys should use some of this foolin’ around time to show me what my nephew looks like these here days-it has been 3 months!

  11. mini co-sleeper is awesome, we used it for both babies and it the best baby gear out there!

  12. I ended up using my Uppa Baby bassinet on a stand right next to my bed. Awesome because I got so much use out of it and didn’t have to buy another item.

Good pick on the arms reach cosleeper! I hear it also turns into a play pen??

  14. You really will love it! True, it’s not the cutest thing in the world, but when you just have to reach over in the middle of the night and not even fully wake up, you’ll love it.

OK, one more unsolicited mom advice thing… I thought my mom was nuts when she got us this baby cd player that has a little nightlight on it. We attached it to the co-sleeper and it really does work to have soft music playing. Plus the nightlight was just soft enough so you could see, but not blinding.

  16. Love the parenting tagline!

  17. this post had me cracking up!! too funny…

love arms reach. i bought it with my 2nd child. i had a c section and having this at the bedside, made it easier to nurse throughout the night.

  18. How funny! The “baby basket” was hilarious.
I love reading about what baby things you are buying- comparing them to the ugly-ass things available to me in the 1980s (although there were darling smocked dresses among the teal and magenta duds for babies). You make pregnancy a classy condition- I’m ashamed to admit to donning flowery dresses with lacy collars and having to fake a smile when a relative gave me the worst maternity outfit ever- an oversized sweatshirt with “Baby Mickey Mouse” holding balloons that spelled out “M-O-M-M-Y”.

I’m with you- can’t stand clutter, either!

  19. That basket is hilarious.

  25. Our mini arms reach co-sleep arrived yesterday. I’m so excited. I love it already. It’s the perfect size. But what’s up with the print all over it. I’m thinking of ways to dress up the side bars.

  26. Whoo! You are too funny, I really love the baby-inna-da-basket image! High-five on getting the hubs to clean out too. We had to move across 7 states before mine would ditch his “aged computer museum.”

On the Arms reach co-sleeper: it was the best thing we bought that we never used. It was great, in theory, and I loved it to pieces all during the last month of my pregnancy. Little did I know that my little dude would prefer to co-sleep the old fashioned way, no extra furniture required. I still love the co-sleeper though…maybe next babe.

  28. Love this post. I’ve been busy unpacking from a move to a much smaller house with no garage. I tell you~at least half this stuff comes out of the box and hits the thrift store bag without a moment’s hesitation.
And, since it has all been in storage for 8 months prior, no one remembers what they packed! A perfect storm, if you will ;)
Maybe you could do a nice garage sale during the US Open? I see you’ve got some nice things to sell…
