Tips for Buying a Crib

Okay, just ONE tip.
If you think, for any reason, that you might have a child that consistently exceeds the 100th percentile for height, do not buy a Stokke Sleepi Crib. Don’t get me wrong – this crib is stylish, modern and unique. We have enjoyed it thoroughly, and recently converted it to a toddler bed.
However, case in point:
Hello! I’m still 2 years old, yet 6 feet tall! Uh, this is getting a little uncomfortable.
Anyone know of some stylish, modern and unique twin beds?

July 21st, 2009 8:19 amOh my, how big IS he? We put our 2 year old right into a queen size bed. My 25 month old is 42 pounds and 39 inches so we felt like it would be a huge waste to put him in a twin. He would be too big for it by age 3!

July 21st, 2009 9:30 amOh man we just went through this with the Bean. She’s almost 40 inches tall at 3 years old, somewhere around the 93rd percentile or something crazy like that.
I started shopping for beds and was horrified, HORRIFIED by how expensive they were. I don’t mind spending a pretty penny on furniture when it’s an investment, but Bean is 3 – she’s too young to express any kind of preference about furniture. So I compromised by buying something sturdy and cheap for now, and when she gets a little older if she really wants a white pine bed or a four poster bed or a pink princess canopy bed, we’ll get it for her.
I got her a simple, twin-size platform bed from Ikea (in a neutral color that matches her existing furniture) and found a firm, Sealy mattress for a steal at Costco. (Mattresses are really the most expensive part – it’s just crazy. I shopped for a mattress just three years ago and the way prices have escalated since then – don’t get me started.)
You can spend as much as you want, of course, but I think it’s silly to go all out on a bed for a 3-year-old who might tell you in 2 or 3 years that she hates it, and wants x, y, or z instead.

July 21st, 2009 9:54 amWe just put our 2 1/2 year old in the TrueModern twin (Design Public has). It’s a platform and will age well we think and the clunk when he falls out is not so bad. P’s on the short side :) and we managed to keep him in the portable crib from Community Playthings until last month–great modern crib for small spaces and short kids. I also like the look of the Argington Ayres Modern twin but some customer service stories I heard ruled it out. Wito in his Stokke is priceless.

July 21st, 2009 10:35 amDucDuc Austin Twin in white and walnut. Hudson has the best looking room in the house. Expensive and took forever to get but well worth it. Huge storage drawers for toys under the bed and a great bookcase on the end. Get it. Now!

I love this bed. The Mr. doesn’t. When I 1st fell in love back in 2007 it only came in white. BORING. Now that it comes in black I am doing to do my best to convince him that Aaron must have this bed when he is ready to move out of his crib. I am not an Ikea whore by any means but I love this bed. A day bed with drawers that converts into a double bed for guests. What’s not too love?

July 23rd, 2009 2:24 pmHello, my $.02 is that I shouldn’t have bought my kids twin beds at all. I was so excited to get them Big Girl and Big Boy beds I did it right away and didn’t think about it. But if you have the room, a full or even queen size bed makes so much sense. You can snuggle with them at bed time, they can have sleepovers, and even use their room to house guests from time to time.

I think I may be imagining things though, my brain isnt quite what it used to be…
