What’s In My Bag

This post is sponsored by Ricola. RIIIIIIIICOLAAAAAAAAA.

Let’s take a look in my bag, shall we? (While writing this post, I thought I remembered doing something similar, and look! 2005, y’all. 8 YEARS AGO. Look at that phone! Hahaaaaa.)

whatsinmybag

As you can see, my uber minimalist days of yore have disappeared, although I still try to keep things relatively tidy. Is it ridiculous that I have a paper calendar, a miniature notepad, AND a pack of post-it notes? Hell no! I am a List Maker, remember? However it might be ridiculous that I carry with me SEVEN lip products…hey, it’s winter and I need to keep my lips moisturized, peeps. Oh, and speaking of old man winter, Ricola, the leading manufacturer of soothing herb drops from Switzerland, has added a new product to its line of herb drops, Extra Strength, for powerful cough relief, which I am sure to keep in my bag at all times during the cooler months. (Go ahead and count ‘em – 7 commas in that sentence.)

Thanks to the lovely herbal drop makers, it’s giveaway time! The winner of this giveaway will receive a $100 VISA gift card and a Ricola Soothing Relief Kit! Awww yeahhhhh. Leave a comment telling me how you “winterize” your bag before Friday, December 20th, and you’ll be entered to win! Thanks, Ricola!

  13. Well, seeing as how I live in sunny Florida, I always have hand sanitizer and sunglasses in my bag. I do like to add Eucerin hand lotion because my knuckles will crack if we have a cold front. I had a terrible cold in October that left me with a hacking cough for SIX weeks. Those Ricola cough drops were the only thing that gave me some relief. Love them!

  14. Kleenex and Chapstick and gloves oh my

  15. Aquaphor and cough drops and kleenex are all essential.

  16. I keep tea bags and tissues and cough drops in my purse! Along with tons of lip products as usual :)

  17. Not just extra lip balm but a tube of Neutrogena hand cream or Aquaphor ointment is essential at this time of year!

  18. I’m sure to have Rosebud Salve for my lips (and hands, in a pinch), sunglasses, and gloves on hand at all times!

  19. Hand cream, tissues, and cough drops!

  20. Bag Balm people! Look into it! Unless you’re carrying around a small clutch, a Bag Balm tin will fit in your purse and is one stop shopping for hands/nails/cuticles/lips/face! Kleenex brand tissues make cute girly pattern tissue packets, so I’m a sucker for those. I’d like to add some Ricola to my purse stash, as sore throat/upper respiratory season is lurking around the corner.

  21. Great post Sarah! I always have much the same in my bag…lots of glosses and balms, lotion, kleenex, gum, sunglasses, and of course my phone and planner/calendar. I have to ask though what is the name, brand, color of the lipliner in your bag? Is it revlon also? Looks like one I’ve used by them called ‘natural’. Just curious:)

  22. Winter for me involves gloves and definitely lip gloss/balm of some kind. New England winters can be harsh!!

  27. I always always have at least 2 tubes of Burt’s Bees on me. Winter/Summer/whatever. I’m afraid it’s an addiction. In the winter I make sure to have a small pack of tissues and some gloves!

  28. Christina W says:

ditto to the handcream and chapstick. Found a new soothing cream from The Honest Company that I love, and Burt’s Bees Replenshing lip balm!!

  29. Tissues, hand sanitizer, and lotion get tossed in!

  30. A pack or two of tissues is a must, along with some lip balm (Woo Babylips!) and a cough drop or hard candy. The nerdy singer in me still cringes at the transition from COLD OUTSIDE to HEAT INSIDE. :)

Seeing as I am the proud mother of a newly potty trained toddler, “winterizing” my bag meant swapping out his summer emergency clothes with a winter set. Lip balm, Aquaphor, and Ricola also live in every bag and both our cars out of necessity!

  37. Living in San Francisco and being a walker/user of transit instead of a car, winterizing my bag means planning for the rainy season and making sure my travel umbrella is always in there no matter what!

Thanks for the giveaway opportunity! :)

Also — I love your cell phone case! It’s super cute. Where did you get it?

  54. Lotion – hand AND face
    Various degrees of lip moisturizers
    Tissue
    Cough drops

    BTW love the wallet =)

  55. lots and lots of hand cream!

question for you – is that a Foley and Corinna bag? if so, would you mind telling us what size (or which model, I guess) you bought? I’m debating different sizes online and can’t decide which one to choose.

    thanks a mill!

PS unrelated but I am a rare commenter – I still love NARS concealer but I found that lately I am having to pair it with a brightener to fight the really bad circles. concealer + brightener = money combo.

  56. 2 bottles of water at all times, and lots of tissues!

  57. I live in Southern California too, so “winter” accessories = heavier lip balm, lotion, and cough drops.

  58. Right now in my winterized bag I have 3 Victoria’s Secret lip glosses, 1 Burt’s Bees lip balm, and 1 Philosophy Pink Almond Candy – and that’s just for my lips! I also have tissues and a tube of Eucerin hand cream.

  59. I have Blistex Deep Renewal lip balm, hand cream, and a travel pack of tissues.

  60. Lotion and Kleenex. Have to use lotion constantly.

  61. I may not have multiple paper products in my bag, but during the winter I have about 4 different hand moisturizers in there!

  62. Hand lotion, chapstick and tissues galore! Constantly giving our kids “nose dives” these days.

  63. lots of lotion, lip balm and kleenex (the holy trinity of winter purse needs) and also a back up pair of mittens in case the ones I’m wearing go astray.

  64. A generous application of lotion and lip balm!

  65. Burt’s Bee’s Chapstick, Kleenex’s and lotion!

  66. I have a tube of Neutrogena Norwegian Formula hand cream, lip balm (I have super dry lips), tissues, a tube of Curel lotion.

  67. Considering I once pulled 10 pens and four different notebooks out of my purse, I feel you on the listmaking!

LA isn’t big on “winter,” but I do always try to carry a tiny umbrella with me from December to March. It’s the worst when you get caught in the one torrential downpour each year! Also: allergy meds. With the wind comes great smog.

  68. Lotion, gloves, chapstick, well about 5 chapsticks, numerous lip glosses… the list goes on.

  69. I winterize with plenty of chapstick, a pair of gloves at all times, and a travel-size pack of tissues!

  70. I always stash a travel size Kiehl’s hand salve in my bag and some chapstick to boot. Usually you can find a some random gloves at the bottom too.

  71. Lip balm for days. That is all.
Was once stopped at the airport by a TSA agent who made me individually explain the no fewer than 15 types of lip product I was carrying. That says it all.
I’m writing this with a raging sore throat in snowy NH and could really use some Riiiiicola!
    Thanks

  72. I always have Crabtree & Evelyn’s gardners hand cream. I also make sure to have a packet of tissues in my purse.

  73. I like to add a hat to winterize my bag. It’s so cozy to find one in there when you really need one, it almost is ok that it adds a perpetual bulk… :) Love your lip balm collection!

  74. Alee Fowler says:

I make sure I have plenty of tissues and hand sanitizer, as well as, chapstick and hand lotion.

  75. I make sure all of my bags are stocked with tissues, chap stick, and hand lotion.

Kleenex and a small bottle of hand lotion are my winter must haves!

  77. Heather Dusek says:

For the winter months, I generally swap out my handbag to something with a heavier texture. The must have winter items I have in my bag are: Tissues, lip balm, hand sanitizer, mints/cough drops and hand lotion.

  78. It’s never really winter in SoCal but I do put a scarf in my bag in case it gets chilly.

  79. Karla Reyes says:

    My winter survive kit includes:
    -Vaseline Lip therapy
-Burt’s bees wax (cold but minty)
-Bath & body works lip scrub
    -EOS hand lotion
    -Hand sanitizer
    -Water bottle (to stay hydrated)
-A pen too! I’m a list maker & written planner girl!
    :)

  80. Do balled up (unused) tissues and two of last years cough drops at the bottom of my cold weather purse count as winterizing?? I switch bags for winter, but contents seem to stay the same.

  81. I make sure I have tissues and some Chapstick. Oh and some lotion for my hands, they tend to get horribly dry in the Winter months.

  82. Jennifer Flavin says:

I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota so I am the queen of winterized bags! Lots of Eucerin hand lotion, Chapstick/Burts Bees, an extra pair of gloves, tissues, tea bags, etc, etc. ;) Oh, and a car wash gift card so that my car stays clean driving around in the dirty snow.

  83. My go-to winter lip product is Aquaphor. I love how it keeps my lips from drying, or getting chapped. Also, a little pack of tissues. But in reality, I need to winterize with a new bag! I am coveting your bag. What brand??

  84. I have all kinds of lip balms in there. I’m not sure but I think they just multiply in the dark depths of my bag.

  85. packs and packs of tissues (my kids noses start running in september and don’t stop til june), a big tube of Aquaphor, no less than 3 Eos lip balms, and a travel sized Kerastase product to revive my hair after the winter hat or hood comes off.

  86. I always have tissues and Softlips vanilla. The rest is just a hodge podge of junk. But I do currently have some Ricola in there. Love them!

  87. The first thing I add to my bag when the weather turns cold is tissues, tissues, tissues. My nose runs constantly when it’s cold out. Annoying!

Thanks for the chance to win.

  88. Lotion, lotion, lotion. And usually some Tylenol daytime cold medicine.

  89. phinniesgirls says:

Extra tissues, honey lollipops for the kids (instead of cough drops) and usuall a spare pair of gloves for everyone (cause we live where it’s cold and one always goes missing).

  90. Tissues, hand cream, and hand sanitizer. Lip product overload is all year round!

  91. Lots of tissues!

  92. Boogie wipes….keep those noses crust free

  93. Definitely keep chap stick, tissue, and Eucerin lotion!

  94. I winterize by loading up on hand lotion – right now I’m carrying The Body Shop’s Almond Hand & Nail Cream and a Crabtree & Evelyn Summer Hill Hand Therapy, two things of travel tissues AND a handful of Ricolas!

  95. I winterize my bag by using an entirely different and larger bag for the winter months. These months just seem to come with hauling around a lot more stuff: gloves, hats, lotion, tissues, cold medicine, etc. I never carry this kind of stuff in the summer!

  96. Aveda Just hands, tissues, extra lips, all the usual suspects, I guess.

  97. Tracy Biolsi says:

Two words: Boogie. Wipes. With a preschooler and kindergartener, cannot live without these in the winter. And Aquaphor for all our lips and dry patches. And Aveda Hand Relief lotion. Okay, that’s more then two words, but for real on the Boogie Wipes. Best invention ever.

  98. I always have Avon’s Moisture Therapy Intensive Healing & Repair for dry/cracking hands. I always have it, but in the winter it’s a MUST.

  99. lip balm, lotion and a pair of those $1 throwaway gloves from the drugstore :)

  103. Sorry if this is a double-post, but I don’t see my post from earlier for some reason…

I’m lucky to live in Southern California so I don’t have to winterize much, but this time of year, my purse always has a crumpled up cardigan at the bottom of it. Last week, I found a stray wool glove, oh, and baby socks! My son is constantly taking those off and they end up in my purse;)

P.S. I tried to buy one of the revlon lip stains yesterday, and they basically were sold out at the store I was at.

  104. Hmmm. . . living in CT in winter is a little bit different than So. Cal :)

    regular lip balm
    medicated lip balm
Hand cream (got this cute little pot of it by Camille Beckman in my last Birchbox which works perfect)
    Nips of whiskey (just kidding)

  105. Mac Lip conditioner and l’occitane hand cream are a must!

  106. Kelly Schmucker says:

I keep gluten free lip balm, hand lotion, tissues, and a dryer sheet in my purse. Yes, a dryer sheet. It’s great for dealing with all the dry weather static cling!

  107. Oh my winterizing really consists of hats, gloves, scarf. Because you never know when that snow storm will hit!

  108. I need lip balm all year around, but for winter I add a more moisturizing one. I also add hand lotion.

  109. I travel a ton and those 3 oz/’must be in baggie’ limits are the bane of my existence, especially during winter. I’m forever swiping any lotion I can get my hands on (heh) from hotels and then getting chastised by the TSA. Worth it. Any time I can actually sneak through with extra lotion that can be used in-flight I am a less-reptilian happy camper!

  110. I keep lip balm in my purse AND in the car in the winter, but I try to also have some lotion and a nail file in my purse because my nails/cuticles get so dry here in CO.

  111. Boogie Wipes!!!

  112. With tons of lotion and packets of tissues.

  113. I add gloves, cashmere wrap, shea butter cream and cough drops to get ready.
    tcarolinep at gmail dot com

  114. Winterizing for me is making sure I’m packed with plenty of super lip balms and hand cream, as well as a place to stash my mega huge dorky mittens.

  115. I have hand lotion and chap stick!

  116. Definitely add in Aquaphor for hands, face, lips and plenty of Ricola! They are the best tasting throat/cough drops and work so well (no, I don’t work for them!). My grandfather always gave them to us when I was a kid.

  117. Tissues, lip balm, and coug drops!!

  118. I just counted and I have nine lip products in my bag, so don’t feel bad. I winterize my bag with a teeny jar of Bag balm. It’s the only thing that really moisturizes my super-dry hands and it works great on my lips, too. (Does that make it ten lip products?)

  119. I make sure I have plenty of Carmex!!! Also, I tend to keep an extra phone charger in there, too! I’ve been stranded at friends’ houses in a blizzard without one –> not fun!

  120. Lip balm and hand cream!

  121. Carmex Smooth & Shiny lip balm, water bottles and fingerless gloves!

  122. I put yak trax in my bag to put over my shoes for when it is icy! (In a tote bag, not my purse…)

  123. Lip balm, tissues, and an extra scarf

  124. Burts & Bee’s lipbalm, tissues, and L’Occitane Lavender hand cream are my winter essentials

  125. Tissues, a few Ricola (Cherriy flavor), an extra lip balm and a pair of stretchy-will-fit-either-kid gloves winterized my bag quite nicely

  126. Aquaphor is a necessity in my bag this time of year.

  127. More hand sanitizer & hand lotion!

  128. Lately it seems I’ve been winterizing my bag with a plethora of receipts from my mad Christmas shopping sprees and a few Christmas cards I have yet to mail.

    Also, lip products.

  129. I added tissues and cough drops. Nothing major! I love seeing what’s in other people’s bags…very cool :)

  130. I have to have a travel size bottle of purell(or any hand sanitizer) and Kiehl’s lip balm # 1. Best lip balm ever. Mint, mmmmm

  131. Ooh — my Chapstick/Carmex count goes from 1-2 to 3-4. Also, I’ll add a thick hand lotion, Kleenex, and an extra hand sanitizer. Ricollllllaaaaa!

  132. Hand lotion and extra red lipstick

  133. Kleenex. Definetly Kleenex. Cold = boogers.

  134. Kleenex for sure, but let’s not forget the one hundred and twelve receipts from all of the Christmas shopping I’ve been doing. Ok, that is not an intentional winterization but is sure is seasonal!

  135. So, can I just say that I think it’s funny that I live somewhere that we actually have winter and the things in my bag are the same all year round. Carmex, Kleenex, hand cream… And now lip butters and chubby sticks. :) And I might throw in a pair of gloves if the temps are gonna drop below 20.

  136. I too live in southern California, so I haven’t seen much of a winter, but my hands seem to know it’s winter!! They are killing me! I need to pack my bag with some good hand lotion! I’m on the hunt.

  137. Bottles of water and a Ziploc bag full of celery and cucumbers! Veggies with high water content help keep my skin hydrated. I love Jack Black Lip Balm with Shea Butter and Vitamin E and L’Occitane Dry Skin Hand Cream. Lifesavers for my cracked lips and knuckles!

  138. I make sure I have lots of lip balm inside my purse, and then I like to add a nice winter-y colored scarf tied to the outside of my purse.

  139. Extra Chapstick, tissues, and boogie wipes for the toddler :)

  140. Chapstick (The Blue moisturizing one instead of the SunShield), Gloves, Hand Lotion. Your bag is very chic- it must be the Ricola European influence!

  141. Gotta have lotion, hand sanitizer, lip balm (I actually use the Vaseline brand in the little tube quite a bit – it is great for chapped lips), gloves, and honestly, these days, my camera. The kids have so many activities going on, even though it is a clunky DSLR, I have been grateful to see it was stashed in my bag on more than one occasion in just the past few days.

  142. esos mint lip balm + l’occitane shea hand creme + emergenC (to ward off colds!)

  143. With all the winter weather foolishness happening in Oklahoma these days, I’m keeping an extra pair of socks, just in case mine get wet through my boots. I also buy a thicker hand cream, since your hands get drier.

  144. I pretty minimalist so I don’t generally do anything but if I were to win I’d fill my bag up with as many of your beauty suggestions I could and a bag of Ricola to boot!

  145. Lip balm, hand cream and mittens!!! Plus about twenty Xmas shopping receipts!

  146. Kleenex and original black tube ChapStick!

  147. Lip Balms galore, Hand Cream, a pack of tissues, lens wipes to wipe snowflakes off of my glasses and tons of coupons for Christmas shopping.

  148. Lotion and this stuff called Letibalm that I’ve only been able to find in Spain. It’s the BEST (better than Carmex or Chapstick!) for dry, cracked lips. And…you can also put it up your nose on really dry days and it’s awesome.

  149. Ha, I never winterize my purse because I live in a warm climate. If it happens to get really cold, we warm climate wimps just stay home! But I do carry lip gloss, hand sanitizer, a cough drop or two, and tissues year round. And I’m thinking I need to give those Revlon lip pencils a try :)

  150. I love your minimalist bag! Reminds me that I need to scale mine down immediately. Feels like I’m carrying two bricks in my bag! LOL My winterized bag must-haves are: hand lotion, plenty of SOFT tissues, Burts Bee’s Lip Balm and Ricolas. Ricola brand is the only one that works for me and I keep a few in my bag all year long. By the way, what happened to their great commercials with the guy blowing that horn of sorts? I miss those! Anyhow, thanks for the post! Loved it!

  151. I have 3 pairs of gloves for any situation that may arise, weather wise.

  152. I make sure every purse has those heat packs, for days that start with “a few errands” but turn into 12 hours of walking around NYC.

  153. I add nipple cream! I know it’s weird but it’s such an awesome moisturizer & you can use it just about anywhere. I also add an extra pair of mittens & a hat for my little girl.

  154. I throw in a tea bag or two, so that i can manage to warm myself up with a cuppa.

  155. I’m in Phoenix, so I don’t really make any changes except for the actual bag (which I haven’t gotten around to switching yet. Oops).

  156. Lip balm and hand cream…lots of it!

  157. I carry extra tissues to blow little noses. I carry lots and lots of hand sanitizing products (gel, spray, wipes) and clorox wipes because I am trying to stave off germs. Also, lots of hand cream and aquaphor for my super dry skin. Thanks for hosting this giveaway.

  158. heather from nc says:

Lip balm, but that is an all-year staple. In the winter, I keep some mint green tea bags in my purse.

  159. plenty of lip produts and aveda lotion for my hands and always a knit hat just in case!

  160. Burts Bee’s lip balm, Cetaphil lotion and tissues (for little, 3yo noses). Dry Colorado air does a number on lips and skin!

  161. Lip Balm, Lip Balm, Lip Balm… I hate dry lips!!! Also hand warmers just in case :)

  162. Elizabeth A says:

Winterize? In So Cal? Okayyyy…. I make sure my umbrella is accessible in my car (not the trunk) so I can shove it on top of my bag if needed. That’s pretty much it, I think. The 8 lip products just live in my bag all year long…

  163. Tissues and then even more tissues. Also an extra pair of sun glasses to keep the cold and germs out

  164. Definitely toss in some hardcore medicated lip balm for long, dry days, and I always have my driving gloves in my purse too.
