Home Tour: Entry and Family Room

30

Next up, the entry and family room! The family room is probably the most used since it’s just an extension of our kitchen in our great room. I love being able to cook while the kids play nearby.

Here’s a before shot.

We didn’t have to do much to this room – just a fresh coat of paint (Dunn Edwards White), and we refinished the floors.

If you have any questions about the furnishings, please feel free to ask. Most are vintage, but a few were new purchases. (The rug is from West Elm and our sofa is from Ikea.) Also, the hanging light fixture was made by Southern Lights Electric. Adam is awesome if you are looking for a custom-made fixture!

Thanks to Jessie Webster for the lovely photos.

  1. Ok, I am feeling Property Envy here. These pictures display a contemporary livable style with pops of color. I have a more traditional style myself but these pictures are flirting with me and I have a crush!

  2. Lovely! How does that rug hold up with kids?

    • I think it holds up very well, but we are pretty tidy over here. No shoes in the house, food in the family room, etc. We actually have white rugs in 4 our of our 5 living spaces!

  3. Your house is stunning! Love all of the natural light and the mid century touches.

  4. oh i’ve been coveting that West Elm rug for a while, and it looks just perfect in your space.

  5. light, bright, and beautiful. pays off to have an interior designer for a husband. :)

I love it. Who is the artist of the piece in the entry? Thanks!

    • I’m pretty sure it was a friend of one of Dustin’s ex-girlfriends. He’s had it forever.

  7. I think it’s time for me to visit again, so I can see it live!

Lovely! I am wondering how your ikea sofa is holding up? We are thinking about the same one for our family room and it will get a lot of use so and also and to stand up to 4 kids.

    • Shannon, I can’t sing the praises of that sofa enough, especially the “dark gray” fabric. We’ve had ours for about four years and it still looks great. (In fact, I’ve talked a few friends into buying the same sofa and they love it as well.)

      • Wondering about that sofa as well, just visited it at the store. Did you switch out the legs or stain them?

  9. Oh, Lovely! Can you tell me about the little brutalist brass wall hanging you have to the left of your tv? It’s WONDERFUL!

    Thank you!

  10. Gorgeous home, Sarah. I would expect nothing less! As a certain ex-girlfriend with a best frien who is an amazing artist, I feel the need to plug her. http://www.saramatsonwestover.com

    • Thank you, Sarah! I’m dying to see your home as well. Dustin just forwarded Sara’s email to me…yes, everyone check out Sara’s website! (Wow, we’re dealing with a lot of Sarahs in this thread.)

Hi Sarah! Everything looks so beautiful! Where did the credenza come from? I love the pops of green!

  12. Mary H. says:

Lovely! And I love the mirror above the TV. Can you tell me where you found it?

  13. The detail on your front door is very cool! Where did you find it?

  14. Kirsten says:

I love the door. What kind of hardware is on the door and is it consistent with your interior doors? Lovely.

  15. Love the balance of everything — colors, textures, new/vintage.

I know you talked some about the process as you were deep in renovations. Considering you husband’s profession, do you clash much on vision/ideas? Was there a collaboration or did one of you have the “ideas”? Not sure where I’m going with these questions. I remember your post about D’s pondering of the wood floor staining, just curious more than anything.

  16. Your home is gorgeous! I am so inspired by these pictures. I want to pin all of them! Also, I second jrm; would love to hear what this process was like, given your husband’s profession!

So many things to lust after but I cannot stop drooling over that front door!!

  18. so tastefully done. love it! which style is the ikea sofa?
